Besides what I posted this past year I fell in love with German Pinschers. Mainly b/c i like dobermans but they are too big. I want one with cropped tail but leave the ears.

7/18/2011 10:02:42 PM
maybe that plus brussels griffon or something
7/18/2011 10:04:46 PM
That or maybe some sort of Norwich Terrier perhaps?
7/18/2011 10:06:36 PM
<3 norwich terriers, and they could definitely give a chestier, brown scraggly look

My grandmother has one and he is the cutest thing ever!Although, I think my dog is pretty darn cute too
7/18/2011 10:24:46 PM
^he is a purebred Havanese with AKC papers. I think it is the picture. He is special though...his coloring is not to AKC standards. He doesn't have black rimmed eyes, a black nose, or black lips. He's been neutered and his sole purpose is companionship, not for show. He has all the personality characteristics of a true Havanese. I keep his coat in a puppy cut for ease of maintenance.
7/19/2011 11:48:16 PM
To be honest papers don't mean a whole lot, especially if you didn't meet the parents in person. AKC is such a scam Only reason I ask is because my mother in law shows Havanese and we have one ourselves. Could also be the way your groomer did the puppy cut. Generally you keep the ears, mustache, and bangs longer so they don't end up looking like some sort of nondescript terrier. They claim the bangs genetically came to be to protect their eyes from the Cuban sun. I don't know how much I buy into that but I did notice our dog was not happy at all a few weeks ago when me made the mistake of giving her a puppy cut ourselves and hacked off her bangs by accident. I guess they were acting like doggie sunglasses in this summer glare [Edited on July 19, 2011 at 11:56 PM. Reason : T]
7/19/2011 11:55:40 PM
Isn't the UKC legit though?
7/19/2011 11:58:22 PM
They have the same issues the AKC does. Mainly that any chucklehead can register a dog as a purebred using fake paperwork. That's why I think it's important to physically see as much as the lineage as you can and see the genetic testing results of the parents if you're going to drop dough on a purebred. Picking one up at a pet store you might as well save some cash and go to the pound. Another thing I don't like about many of the dog registries is for many decades they promoted show standards that proved ultimately harmful to the breed. They've begun to step away from some of them but still gave a ways to go.Also, it's retarded that American based dog registries won't recognize Cuban bred Havanese. They're the freaking national dog of Cuba lol.
7/20/2011 12:07:41 AM
Haha, trueI remember at the shelter we had two walker tree hounds up for adoption with UKC papers and this one dude (who ended up adopting them anyway) was PISSED when they had to be spayed and neutered
7/20/2011 12:09:06 AM
Grew up with Bassets, stubborn but loving. Definitely not for everyone. Whenever I get a yard again I'll probably get one.
7/20/2011 12:11:53 AM
I forget the exact history of how UKC came to be but it basically had to do with a schism in the AKC over what breeds to accept. A lot of people say that puppy mills register with UKC because their paperwork is easier but any puppy mill broker with half a brain could do the same with the AKC. Some of the AKC registered kennels out in Missouri have terrible conditions for their dogs and no healthy breeding program. It always makes me sad when I see breeder seizures or surrenders from that area because there's a very good chance the poor dog is inbred and will very likely have health problems when they're older.
7/20/2011 12:15:28 AM
Me and my girlfriend both lurve Pembroke Welsh Corgis. We plan to get one at some point, and hopefully it won't be too hard to find a breeder.Otherwise, I'm still a sucker for retrievers.
7/20/2011 1:32:59 AM
The lady and I have lots of conversations over what our first dog is going to be. I've always loved medium sized muscular dogs like boxers and pits. Her parents and sister both have Italian Spinones...which I really like, but just aren't my favorite. We have both agreed that we'd be perfectly happy with rescued mutt of any kind. But we both love monster dogs and recently fallen in love with the French Mastiff, Dogue de Bordeaux. So this will probably be the first one:Then we'll probably follow that one with a little dog like a pug or a french bulldog.

^ I'm going to go into hate mode real quick and say that I think corgis are probably the last breed I would ever want. They look absolutely ridiculous and have little functionality other than to look ridiculous.

My wife really wants a dog, I don't like them that much.I've only had one purebred growing up... a black lab. I liked him, but labs are definitely an outdoor dog. They smell bad.I thought about a beagle, but I've heard they are flight risks. She is partial to german shorthairs, but those dogs define the word hyperactivity. I can see one demolishing the entire house if it gets bored.
7/20/2011 12:49:30 PM
^My old roommate had a german shorthaired. Beautiful and fun dog...but a little batshit and full of energy. If you get one of those, either have a big back yard with a doggy door, or be able to run the shit out of it in the morning and in the evening or they will tear your shit apart.Although his dog isn't an absolute terror...he's going into year 3 with him and he still has his lapses and ruins somebody's shoes or a piece of furniture.^^ That's scary.[Edited on July 20, 2011 at 12:52 PM. 7/20/2011 12:51:53 PM
I'm partial to pits, personally.
7/20/2011 12:58:35 PM
^^Yeah, a dozen years ago my wife bread german shorhairs. My experience with them is that they just can't sit still and they will find things to destroy if they get bored. Not a fan of the breed myself. She did have a few well behaved ones, but that's largely because they had 40 acres of land to free roam, so they would occasionally get tired and lay down. She really wants a pointer, but I'm guessing all pointers are just as energetic, crazy, and destructive.

redbone coonhound... she can order beverages now too.
7/20/2011 1:18:05 PM
Do coonhounds have the same sort of howling bark as beagles?
7/20/2011 1:20:45 PM
Yeah only better. Hers is deeper and supposed to be bread for a 7mile bark but she understands "inside voices"the only time i've ever heard her full bark is when she treed something and it about makes your ears bleed, and she can't hear you over it.
7/20/2011 1:25:56 PM
^^^^Thanks for the breed suggestions. I'm not a big on long fur, so I'll look into the great dane and basset hound suggestions.[Edited on July 20, 2011 at 1:26 PM. Reason : -]
7/20/2011 1:26:01 PM
Well keep in mind any breed with longer fur you just keep in a puppy cut. Nice thing about Havanese and Bichon is they don't shed and are relatively dander-free, so you're not having to constantly vacuum after them or chase hair tumbleweeds around your house. Keep them in a buzz cut and you don't have to worry about brushing them very often And they don't get that stink that some breeds like labs get. I hate wet dog smell with a passion [Edited on July 20, 2011 at 1:29 PM. Reason : a]

Lou dog has these traits i love. 1. the dog is brilliant unfortunately training her with treats is difficult because they make her hyper 2. she can roll in mud and its like her coat is rain-xed it just falls right off3. she BARELY sheds because her hair barely grows (took over a year for her hair to grow back where they shaved to have her fixed.4. her bark is awesome not annoying. And when she tries to talk to you its one slurred howl at about a speaking level. 5. she tells you what she needs when she needs it with no false alarms... if she's not feeling well and needs to go out more then scheduled she'll ring the bells at the door to let you know. 6. she pees in the bathtub if she has to.
