I just have a green bin that I bought at target for like 5 bucks or something like that. I use that and the green Raleigh bin and they pick up all the recycling every week. no biggie.

Typical question from someone who knows jack squat about recycling. Glass is extremely difficult to remove as it is broken down into tiny pieces and if paper is wet, they stick to each other. Basically gravity is used to try and get glass out and much of it is separated, but there is always glass present in the paper which then wrecks havoc in the paper recycling processes. As for metal, magnets are used, but the way the material is handled, paper can interfere with the magnets.

It is not like some dude is just sitting there going through the waste one piece at a time. They have conveyor belts and rollers moving at 300-500 ft/min as recycling is a continuous process. At the end of some processes (Charlotte for example), they'll have actual people picking through the material on a conveyor, but that process is inefficient as they can only pick out so much.

Back to the glass issue. Seeing that the vast majority of glass coming out of these recycling plants goes to a landfill, I am simply letting people know that they'd be better off putting the glass in their regular trash. It is going there anyway. By sending it to a recycler, you double or triple the handling of the glass while also helping to destroy recycling equipment.

Yeah it is an industry problem in that no glass manufacturer will develop a technology to economically take in recycled glass, but in the mean time, counties should stop trying to recycle glass unless they have people separating it by color. Curbside glass recycling is a waste of resources.

Just throw your recyclables in the trash. Raleigh probably just throws recycling in the landfill anyway. If Raleigh really cared about the environment they'd give us proper carts.

damn, I'd love to get the bigger cart already, we constantly fill our green bin to capacity. I called the city of raleigh to request a 2nd green bin until the carts come, and the lady said that we will have to pay for a 2nd green bin which is ridiculous. We also could use a plastic storage bin that is marked for recycling only, but we dont have a spare anywhere

2, now 3. we used to drink a lot of soda. (don't anymore.)
but we have larger things like milk gallons, cans, cardboard, etc that take up a lot of space in those little containers.

I have the huge rubbermaid tubs that I put everything in. Usually 2 or 3 of them. They will pick up any type of container if you don't have the large can yet.

In reading this thread, I realize we either are abnormal or you all must generate a lot of recycling and waste (kids possibly? there are just two of us)

We only put our big trash container out once per month and it is usually not even full (3-4 small kitchen trash bags at most).

We are getting recycling carts in my area at some point to replace the small bins as well and I am looking forward to that, but that's just so I don't have to put recycling out every week. We fill the small bin up every week but if we had a cart for the recycling, we could easily put out our trash and recycling once a month.

The roll-away bins are ok, I just hate that they only pick up every other week. I pretty much fill it up every week so if I forget one week I'll be boned.

^ I think it's a $50 Harris Teeter gift card and there's only 10 of them so the chances are pretty slim. The nice thing is all you have to do is put the sticker on the bin and don't put anything in it that's not recycleable.

To be fair, the stickers do say "carts or bins"

Although they say one on the side and one on the top, which is impossible with bins.

I can agree with that. I don't get how it takes 5 years to deploy these things. There must be some hangup on the trucks that pick them up. I'd guess they didn't have enough $texas to buy all the trucks at the same time.
