I doubt Steam will die, the market is moving towards digital distribution, and Steam is king in that regard.

^Agree, Steam is the future. I don't think we have to worry about Valve killing it off. At this point its not just some testbed for a lone developer to publish their own games and skip the middlemen. They have become the middlemen (albeit far less greedy and obviously not taking nearly as big a cut as the retail publishers do) and far too much is riding on Valve. Hell they said that the average developer makes $30 off a $50 game sold on Steam, vs. $7.50 for the retail sale, so I would not be surprised if Valve makes more on the small amounts they make of all transactions than they do from selling their own games.

BTW, Gabe has said that they have tested killing all Steam authentication, and it worked just fine, so in some strange event that Steam has to be shutdown, they can send a command to allow all games to just be accessible, if the need arises.

^^^^^ That's good to know. I don't doubt that digital distribution is the future, but tech companies, especially software companies, have a knack for appearing and disappearing. I think Steam is best positioned at this point, but you never know who may come out of nowhere to knock them off their pedestal.

Quote :
"The anti-cheating software embedded in Valve's Steamworks platform recently took on a mind of its own, banning over 12,000 non-cheating Modern Warfare 2 players over the past two weeks. The cause for its insatiable ban lust? Valve president Gabe Newell explained in an email to those affected, "the problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version." See, we were just thinking that that had something to do with it.

Newell begged pardon for the erroneous bans, adding "this was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you." An apology and a swift reversal of the ban aren't all that these users will receive -- Newell promised a giftable copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to all those affected, as well as one copy for themselves, provided they don't already have it. "

^Yea just saw this at work. Trying to decide I have Fallout 3, but want the $DLC. I first saw GOTY for $20, but then I saw the Bethesda pack. I have Morrowind and Oblivion and maybe a little of the DLC, but I could just bite the bullet and buy that pack to get New Vegas. Of course then I have to pay for the $DLC seperately, so I may just save my $$ and just get Fallout GOTY.

Also Bad Company 2 for $6.79 is a steal. Esp. with Vietnam just released.

I need the Fallout 3 DLC. I have plain Fallout 3. Do you think that the DLC is worth buying the GOTY for $20 to get all of it in one shot?

How much do you like Fallout 3?

I'd say it's worth it, Point Lookout is fantastic especially.

Haven't been keeping up with the sale as much as I should.

The Total War bundle is great if you like that kind of game.
Stalker bundle is good also as long as you get them patched.
Jedi Knight bundle is pretty awesome but I have all those games already.

You can buy Magicka for $3.50 from green man gaming and activate it on steam. I've found it very fun and addicting. I've already gotten my money's worth 10 times over.

Think I'll wait and see if they do a package deal for Dawn of War II and all the expansions. The THQ package is tempting though, but I've got until July 10th.

Actually haven't bought much so far, a lot of the stuff on sale was on sale in the past. Looking for some of the Paradox Strategy games to go on sale, only have EU3. If not, I might just buy the pack for $45 at the end of the whole thing.
