NASA was on the short list of people/agencies/situations/animals we HADN'T blamed yetit was bound to happen

My point was the enormous wastefulness of NASA pales in comparison to the wastefulness of the War Department(I can't call it defense spending with a straight face)[Edited on October 28, 2009 at 2:04 PM. Reason : It doesn't justify either one.]

Inaccuracies:

1.) You know nothing of my charitable contributions, and I'd ask you to refrain from ad hominem.2.) I view manned spaceflight as a waste. This rocket's purpose is manned spaceflight. Therefore it's all a waste, regardless of any data gained. 3.) You call it trolling, I call it making a valid point at a time when the public is talking about it. You can see my most recent soapbox post if you'd like to know why you find my posts so threatening:

There are plenty of every day items we have today thanks in part to NASA. to name a few, invisible braces (in part because of NASA), scratch resistant lenses, components of the ear thermometer. Also its in our nature to want to explore and look beyond...if more people thought like you (thank God they don't) we'd all still be living in caves making sure there was enough food to go round...Also...until you, yourself, start contributing to solving the worlds problems keep your mouth shut. Keep your political hot air in the soap box and don't waste our time with it.

^^I, too, want my money to go to NASA. In fact I think NASA needs more money...the money spent on Iraq and Afghanistan would have done wonders for NASA.[Edited on October 28, 2009 at 3:36 PM. Reason : ^]

*sigh*, this is true. The cost of one stealth bomber alone could pay for several shuttle missions and a whole bunch of research.

Guys guys guys, don't feed the troll! It's all this guy does, in whatever forum he is in.

I say we take all the billions we already send in foreign aid and put it towards NASA. We will see a much better RoI

about the only thing run worse than the government was pre-implosion GM....they spent 13 billion and another 4 billion on what? they couldn't say, they just needed the money.... shit like this is fucking irritating[Edited on October 29, 2009 at 12:56 PM. The tide of public opinion is indeed turning against NASA:http://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/9yvgm/ask_science_what_is_one_doable_thing_nasa_can_do/Why should we go to Mars when 1/5 of the country can't even go to work? What's this in today's newspaper? $11 million wasted by NASA, by their own admission. AND they tried to cover it up.http://www.dailytech.com/Report+NASAfunded+Research+Regarding+Flight+Safety+Was+a+Waste+of+Funds/article16660.htmhttp://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gCiRedzPiEzMIsP7x3Ma0zfTEdKAD9BK75B80

I can't wait for the Ares V... it is going to be a BEAST of a rocket. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ares_Vthe Ares I and Ares V rockets are going to be a much more efficient and safe system than the space shuttle. I've been saying for years that we need a dedicated system for human transport and a dedicated system for heavy loads.

^^^Why fly planes when some people don't even have a car? We could save all that money on airplanes and give it to people who don't have cars.[Edited on October 29, 2009 at 2:09 PM. Reason : ]

^^ looks like a cigarette
10/29/2009 2:15:05 PM
Maybe like the ones in the Fifth Element that were almost all filter and no actual cigarette. I think that was the movie.

This graphic shows the lift capability into low earth orbit (where the ISS is located.) the Ares V outclasses all of the other rockets, even the old soviet heavy lifters (not shown)
10/29/2009 2:45:23 PM
For those that don't know what that cloud around the rocket was (including me) here is a short explanation:http://dsc.discovery.com/space/big-pic/ares-i-x-launch-transonic.html

^I've never seen that second picture. that's awesome.
10/29/2009 8:14:34 PM
think about how many fewer launches the construction of the ISS would have been if we were using the Ares V instead of the space shuttle. (no, not all of the components were delivered by the shuttle, but a lot were.)
10/29/2009 8:18:08 PM
they could have been bigger too, in fact they probably will add a few extra large ones like that later
10/29/2009 9:11:36 PM
everybody at work went outsidei just couldnt bring myself to care
10/29/2009 9:16:30 PM

Smath, what are these soviet heavies you were referring to?Also, what rocket system of ours did we use for ISS initial launching, as didnt we use some like deltas to start? On that note, how much can a delta lift?
10/29/2009 10:28:48 PM
like energia (the one designed to launch their version of the space shuttle) and N1 (their moonshot rocket)
10/30/2009 10:43:09 AM
they also have used the Proton-K for a lot of the russian-delivered ISS parts.
10/30/2009 11:17:25 AM
NASA is attempting to launch the space shuttle Atlantis today if anyone is interested.[Edited on November 16, 2009 at 12:44 PM. Reason : a]
11/16/2009 12:28:48 PM
isn't that supposed to happen around 2:30?
11/16/2009 12:33:48 PM
countdown is currently at 50 minutes
11/16/2009 12:44:32 PM
11/16/2009 12:47:59 PM
^ Yup should be 10 sec after 2:28 for launch according to mission control. Currently T -36 on the countdown timer. What is the countdown for I wonder?

11/16/2009 3:06:26 PM
hey SMC, do you have family over in Africa that didn't get food this month? Is that why you're so bitter to spending money on technological advances?
11/16/2009 3:48:54 PM
Hey smc,Nowhere on that bigass lego diagram of spending is a block that says 'manned space flight'. There is a block that has 'manned mission to mars,' but that is hardly the equivalent. Are you really so stupid that you think the two are the same thing?
