The barrels are not owned by the city, they are owned by the contractor.

Did the cops REALLY have nothing better to do than go an all out investigation about a couple barrels whose owner did not even want to file charges for???I could see if the cops drove by while he was doing it but for fucks sake. You would think they'd be out getting crack heads, responding to domestic disputes, stopping drunk drivers, or at the least harassing college kids for having a beer. Nope they are going to spend your tax payer money to find the barrel bandit.

Today, we are all Joseph Carnevale.
6/18/2009 3:36:21 PM
There was just a story on NPR about this where Carnevale spoke about the monster, the charges, and the probation violation. It was a generally positive story -- although he did clearly admit to the crimes....
6/18/2009 5:05:35 PM
i'm glad we have people that are willing to do crazy stuff like that. i only wish i could've seen it in person.thank you newraleigh.com for reporting interesting stuff.
6/18/2009 5:09:51 PM
^^ yeah, just heard it - how embarrassing to tell a national audience how you're on probation for drunkenly stealing a boat on All Things Considered homepage nowaudio will be up laterhttp://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=105592372I thought it was strange how they described the monster as having his thumb sticking out..... I thought it was pretty clear that the monster is pointing in the direction of traffic flow, away from the construction lane, right?
6/18/2009 5:26:15 PM
Ha I just heard that on my way home
6/18/2009 5:47:39 PM
So at the metro stations here in DC, they give away a free newspaper called Express, which is owned by the Washington Post. I open it up this morning, and I see a photo/caption about the Hillsborough St. barrel monster. Head to http://expressnightout.com, click on the print edition link and click today's date to check it out.Just more evidence of how widespread this story has gotten in the past few days. Pretty funny.
6/18/2009 6:18:56 PM
I haven't read through the whole thread, but did this guy do all this at like 3 in the morning? How did someone not stop him before?
6/18/2009 6:22:59 PM
6/19/2009 8:39:52 AM
Oh man, if he's on probation for drunkenly stealing a boat, then these charges (if they hold up) are going to really fuck with him.
6/19/2009 8:49:47 AM
I thought the company would have to press charges, since any/all damages were their property? This really shows where this city's/PD priorities are. It's sad, it's really sad. And in the end, I don't feel like wasting tax payer dollars on this kid. no one, except for the city, wants him charged/think any real damage has been done. so why does RPD have a hard on for this kid? I'm guessing it's another one of those, power controlling, college-kid hating things. Lord knows that RPD tries to screw students every way possible. [Edited on June 19, 2009 at 8:59 AM. Reason : .]

I think the best part is that the construction company didn't even want to be paid back. They liked the free advertising. I, too, listen to NPR/watch HLN stare at Robin Meade's chest.
6/19/2009 11:34:06 AM
Free advertising?
6/19/2009 12:38:27 PM
yeah I heard him on NPR. He said something to the affect of: "I was drunk on a kayak trip and I was tired of paddling so I went joyriding on someone elses boat, I returned it, just at a different dock."I'm sorry but that made me chuckle. Why would you tell that story?
6/19/2009 12:43:43 PM
Unfortunately, my jury duty date is the day before he's in court. This would have been a good case to try and sway the jury on (if chosen).

i heard him from about 7:15 to 7:30. i had to go inside from the parking lot, so i didn't get to hear him answer the listeners' questions.they mentioned trying to get the barrel monster from the construction company and have it displayed at downtown live
7/22/2009 10:39:59 AM
lol that'd be funny if i saw him at community service up at the food bank.
7/22/2009 10:41:30 AM
he said that he was interested in habitat for humanity
7/22/2009 10:55:41 AM
oh goddamnit he's going to build houses out of barrels isn't he
7/22/2009 10:57:23 AM
Habitat is the greatest. I did work with their Decon crew in HS and it was a heck of a good time.
7/22/2009 10:58:36 AM
one guy called in from a construction company saying he'd make a donation (monetary or barrels, i forget) so he could build a new one for downtown live
7/22/2009 11:01:03 AM
^awesome. i wish they'd have the original, though. apparently the construction company has been told they can go pick up the monster from wherever they keep the evidence.
