I wish you had the chance to drive a C5 with a decent street/track suspension and good tires. I'm just not buying the magnitude of your steering feel evaluation when you compare a 911 with brand new performance suspension and tires to an old stock C5. Just putting rcomps on both would make the comparison a lot more meaningful. You cant feel shit on street tires.
5/20/2009 1:20:48 PM
Though tires/set up has a large impact, I've driven 911s on dead shocks/factory suspension, tired bushings and bad tires before, and I've also driven Z06's with less than 20k miles... Steering in the 911 is divine, and there just is no comparison. Now, I feel I've praised the C5 plenty, other than the obvious power thing, the composure it has, along with the lack of body lean and the absence of understeer is rather impressive. Steering feel/feedback is just not a strong suit of this chassis though. Have you driven one? I don't think you'd argue about their steering if you had, particularly in comparison to other higher caliber sports cars. The 996 and the C5 should not feel close in steering though, even given equal suspension set ups, the 911 has no weight in the front, and a far shorter wheel base. Also, double a-arm can be/is technically the better set up but it does seem to take away some steering feel. This is like arguing that if an S4 had equal tires to an M3, that it'd have just as good steering feel... I don't want to get too far into this, but there are other factors also, like the length to width ratio of the contact patch of a tire. A longer contact patch tends to give crisper feed back, while requiring less caster for self centering. The Corvette is extremely limited in the caster it can run from what I've seen, where as the 996 comes from the factory with over 7 degrees! Are you in Raleigh? We're talking about steering, but I think the difference is profound even from the passenger seat...
5/20/2009 1:41:13 PM
I don't disagree that the 911 probably has better feel (i've never driven a 911) one bit, i'm just saying i wish the experiment was more controlled. Not your fault, its not your job to produce controlled car driving feel experiments, just saying.I know in the E30 (pretty well track prepped, delrin/poly everywhere) i could easily feel the difference not only between street tires and rcomps, but between shitty street tires (my all season to/from track tires that i've tracked on occasion), good street tires (Azenis, etc), lower end Rcomps like RA1s, and good ones like Hoosier R6s. The R6s were almost a religious experience in feel.So because i think i'll be leaning toward a C5 as a track/race car in a few years, i'm interested in knowing about the feel in that form. While other cars might be better, i'm sure the feel and feedback from a race prepped C5 on Rcomps will be just fine.

So, it's sold. I drove it for the last time today, and delivered it. The new owner seems like a cool dude, and he'll appreciate it a lot I think. I was happy that he was so happy...I admit, it would probably feel tons better with some modifications, and the chassis was very composed stock. Alas it was not the car for me. Also, I wouldn't try tracking one on a budget... 350 + hp/wide low profile tires = high consumable costs, no way around it.
6/2/2009 10:52:18 PM
True.At least everything else is cheap, though.
6/2/2009 10:58:13 PM
Not as cheap as I'd hoped. Brake rotors were comparable to what I got the rotors on the 911 for, and pads were actually more expensive... The big + for me would've been the ability to find these parts at almost any Advance Auto/Autozone and that type of place. Now things like coil packs and control arms and such were a tad cheaper, but often the difference was within 30% of everything I've looked at. Window motors were not available separate from the regulators, which made them more expensive, so on. I think if you want cheap performance, something like a supercharged S2k makes a lot of sense. Overall though, for $~15k entry price, there isn't much out there that can perform the way a bone stock C5 does. The way you can rotate the car with the throttle, and that seductive engine tone... If I had room/time/$ for several tracky/performance cars, I'd certainly own a Corvette.

haha, i'm normally against stickers on cars (or anything else that makes it readily identifiable and/or look stupid), but if/when I get a Prius, I might have to put my USMC and NRA stickers on it, although I might put a Grateful Dead skull or something on it, too, haha.

So right now I don't have a job, but if my main job prospect comes together, I sure would love to have a C7 Z06 after they depreciate for a year or two.Too bad they're way too "connected" and privacy-intruding. That, and I'd have a really long work commute with that job, too. Not the car to drive 30k miles/year in.
10/6/2014 12:32:40 AM
I keep my eye on the prices of used C6 ZO6s, when they get to 30k or less thats my next new to me car.
10/6/2014 7:15:10 AM
I’ve thought the same. I think the C6 Z06 is/will be quite the bargain for a while. Besides, superchargers are no good for track work!
10/6/2014 8:57:35 PM
Why? You think it would have heat issues?I doubt it, at least in stock form.
10/6/2014 10:14:01 PM
If you get it for the track, your first mod better be a second inter cooler. But then the question becomes why spend 80k for a heavier track car, when you can get the C6 Z for a bargain, and it looks better imo.Different engine, but the Zl1/CTS-V supercharged cars, heat soak like crazy.[Edited on October 7, 2014 at 7:35 AM. Reason : .]
10/7/2014 7:35:12 AM
^^I've read in several places that the C6 ZO6 engine runs pretty hot, 300° or so is common at the track. Also it would appear that even the "track ready" Z/28 has heat management issues...So sadly I fear the same for the C7 ZO6, at least to some degree.
10/7/2014 9:51:38 AM
Very few stock cars have enough engine and brake cooling for track duty
10/7/2014 1:04:16 PM
Agreed for the most part. Especially cars weighing over 3000lbs with 500+ hp. That's a lot of heat to manage. Now, my S2000 could shrug off a 30 min track session like it was nothing - stock aside from brake pads. Ditto my Integra GS-R when it had 230k miles on the clock - though that car didn't have lots of heat to manage And my Cayman S should handle things just fine. But then again these cars aren't in the same league (or time zone) as a C6 or C7 ZO6.[Edited on October 7, 2014 at 1:19 PM. My C5 Z06 had no problems at all. It had Super Blue brake fluid and Carbotech pads, and was otherwise stock.C6 and C7 Z06s are much further removed from the standard 'Vette; the C5 basically has a hotter spec LS engine, stiffer springs/shocks/sways, wider wheels/tires, and a few weight mods like thinner glass, etc. Oh, and the brake cooling ducts, which are functional.

my speedway white z06
10/11/2014 6:42:46 AM
I think white’s an amazing color for a C5 Z06, so rare though. I’ve only seen one in person, it had a red interior
10/12/2014 2:14:25 PM
I'm not opposed to red interiors, per se. I had an AP1 S2000 with the red/black 2-tone interior that I thought looked great:I think they pair especially well with white (and to a lesser extent, silver) exteriors. The red interior C5s, though, are even more of a disgusting eyesore than the regular C5 interior:I think it's the dash being black on top and red on the bottom that offends my senses the most. They either should have made the dash all black, or they should have had more continuity by having red carpet and lower door skins. That, and aftermarket replacement is the only cure for the seats in a C5, regardless of color. They look like absolute shit, and are the floppiest, shittiest bucket seats I've ever driven in. No shit, I would rather have the seats in my Honda Insight. They're somewhat more comfortable and much more sturdy and supportive.Mercifully, my C5 Z06 was solid black inside. The C5 interior is almost a dealbreaker; red would have been over the line.My sympathies if yours is afflicted with the red interior. It could prob look good with Corbeau seats and some aftermarket red carpet and a couple different trim pieces.[Edited on October 12, 2014 at 2:28 PM. Reason : ][Edited on October 12, 2014 at 2:29 PM. I don’t like red interiors in anything, I don’t like C5 (or most other 90s/early 2000s GM interiors). Put the two together and it’s atrocious.
