4 shitty teams, we're the shittiest
1/5/2016 1:12:50 PM
so those are the teams that have NOT won either a national title or conference title in BB or FB since 1987?
1/5/2016 1:19:16 PM
Technically USF isn't a major conference team (and does DePaul even play football?)
1/5/2016 1:35:23 PM
DePaul shouldn't count. no football program
1/5/2016 1:55:29 PM
So of major programs is it really us and South Carolina? Didn't they at least win the SEC east one of these past few years?
1/5/2016 2:25:01 PM
Yes, lost to Auburn in the SEC CHamp game
1/5/2016 3:19:10 PM
the worst part is that if it weren't for maryland raining on our parade back in 2010, we woulda at least had a crack at an ACC football title.
1/5/2016 3:19:53 PM
We did reach the ACC tourney final a couple of times. So that should count as a division title dont you think
1/5/2016 3:21:44 PM
South Carolina also won back to back College World SeriesLastInACC? More like LastinNCAA even though the 1987 line is completely arbitrary[Edited on January 5, 2016 at 5:08 PM. Reason : iowa sucks]
1/5/2016 5:07:27 PM
so you're saying we're due...
1/5/2016 5:09:18 PM
I dont see either team winning one for at least another 3 years.
1/5/2016 5:48:33 PM
^I think it could be longer than that. The ACC just got tougher with the addition of Louisville who is pretty good at basketball and sometimes football too. Plus Virginia has gotten better at basketball and Syracuse is usually good at basketball. We're pretty much screwed in football now that Clemson and FSU are both good again. We are like the Mississippi schools. They have some decent football programs now, but still struggle to do anything because of LSU, Auburn, and Alabama. We could get a great coach and be a top 5 team every year and finish 3rd in our division behind FSU and Clemson every year.
1/5/2016 7:09:56 PM
Oh yeah football is monumental for both schools but winning a basketball conference tourney is probably ho we it will happen for us and usc. I still dont see even that happening for at least 3 years.
1/5/2016 8:42:36 PM
^I think our best chance is going to be when Pitino, Williams, and Coach K retire. We'll need to have them retire around the same time and have a pretty solid team waiting to take over. When Dean Smith retired UNC wasn't quite as good as they had been until Williams came in and got things rolling again. Gut and Doh were just ok at best. The next Duke coach won't be as great as Coach K no matter who it is.
1/9/2016 8:24:31 PM
if pitino williams boehim and k were gone right now, we still wouldn't win a championship. Miami Pitt Notre Dame UVA are all still there with great non-hall of fame coaches. You make that statement as if we've had championship worthy teams that just got outdone by great coaches. I know we lost in a few ACC championship games but we were lucky to be in those games to start with. Also, you better bet at least two of those programs will make slam dunk hires and won't miss a beat when their coach retires.
1/9/2016 8:41:37 PM
Duke is going to hire someone in the "family" (probably hand picked by Coach K)however, if that doesn't work out, they will throw a shitload of money at the best coach out there
1/9/2016 10:46:58 PM
1/10/2016 10:52:06 AM
And if UNC gets that hammer dropped on them (which may also be when Roy retires)
1/10/2016 10:53:11 AM
Bttt. Still us, South Carolina, and Utah.
4/1/2017 8:36:37 PM
^ This should really include Final Fours. That's a banner, publicity, recruiting bump, etc. Arguably more people are paying attention to who makes the FF than who wins the SEC or PAC-12.So it's us alone after this year (Utah had the Andre Miller team make the FF in 1998).I'd expand this to also include New Year's Six/BCS/Bowl Alliance/Bowl Coalition games.I'd be just as happy seeing us in the Fiesta, Sugar, or Orange Bowls as I would be seeing us win the ACC, since arguably we could get there by beating Clemson and FSU but then somehow losing the ACC title game, and that would still be a huge season for us that I'd buy a t-shirt for. Other high level bowls don't use as objective of a marker of success to make their selections, so don't try to argue that the Gator Bowl was ever of the level of the present-day New Year's Six.So for me, it's conference title, Final Four, or New Year's Six Bowl (LOL at us in the CFP).(also the Peach doesn't count before 2014)[Edited on April 9, 2017 at 4:33 PM. Yeah let's just make shit up
4/9/2017 4:32:37 PM
This is a solid standard. Fuck you.
4/9/2017 4:34:48 PM
It's a fine standard. But an entirely different standard was set on page 1. It doesn't really matter. We know it's sad either way you look at it. But I like the original standard of looking specifically at titles. It's just easier. More straightforward. But either way it's pathetic. It's actually impressive to me that we're in such exclusive company. We've had some real shitty years, but on the whole I'd describe us as very mediocre in basketball and football over this time frame. Not perennial basement dwellers at all. Just mediocre. There are teams that have had lower and frequent lows than us for sure. But we've managed to be just mediocre with a few shit seasons and a few real good ones without managaing to have a title. Wake Forest won the 1970 ACC football championship. Then again in 2006. 2006 - 1970 = 36. NC State last won it in 1979. 2021 -1979 = 42. Wake Forest is about to end a 15 year drought of no football titles.
11/14/2021 9:54:35 AM
that certainly is some math
11/14/2021 2:05:08 PM
NC State just won the National Championship in Women's Cross CountryWon in 1979 and 1980 before it was NCAA so first NCAA title since 1983
11/20/2021 10:48:31 AM
That's great that our Olympic sports have done well, but it's still pathetic that we haven't won anything significant since 1987 and almost everyone else has. Right now was the time to do it too and we are still swimming in mediocrity while Virginia went from 1 ACC Tournament title (1976) to multiple titles in a short amount of time and Wake Forest is about to win their 2nd football championship since 2006. What are we doing? We're getting ready to search for a new basketball coach again.
11/21/2021 10:46:43 AM
Maybe you should make a creepy collage about it
11/21/2021 11:00:08 AM
And the streak officially continues. Basketball isn't going to get it done this year either.
11/27/2021 8:17:07 PM
Scratch Utah from the list. They just won their first power conference championship after defeating Oregon in the Pac-12 football title game. Now it's a race between NC State and South Carolina.

Pending sigh....

10 diff teams have won acc tourney since states last
3/12/2022 10:38:51 PM
But we beat VT. Transitive property ACC champions!

3/13/2022 9:28:32 AM
Bruh, it's getting to be a serious kick in the nuts with mediocre ass VT and Pitt teams can luck into a fuckin ACC championship in bball and football in the right year, but we are never in a position to seize a down ACC. I don't even give a fuck about a national title. Just give me one ACC title in a revenue sport in my lifetime.
3/13/2022 9:31:09 AM
VT was actually supposed to be good this year. They just shut the bed for awhile. Also we literally have won 3 ACC championships in a row. Oh right, it doesn't count because women]
3/13/2022 9:52:26 AM
Justinnumbers, actual question--are you my 17 yr old son trolling me? Arguing with literally everything and nothing about every single thing I post on here--even shit that is basically universally agreed upon by every state fan. When you are in the same side of the conference as a national power in football or right down the road from two blue bloods, it's understandable to an extent that you aren't gonna be whipping ass every year. It just sucks that we don't ever seem to be in a position to even seize "lucky" moments when those programs have a down year and a program like Wake fucking Forest which has a fraction of the budget and fan support can. Yes, I am aware we are awesome in womens bball, cross country, wrestling and seemingly just about every other sport that most people don't really care about. That's great. None of them are widely considered "revenue sports" which is what I said in my post. If football and mens bball hadn't been worthless for the last three decades, people would be yawning about those sports being awesome now too. As it is, those sports are the only things a state fan can hang their hat on.[Edited on March 13, 2022 at 10:16 AM. Reason : d][Edited on March 13, 2022 at 10:16 AM. Reason : d]

I really enjoy and am proud of our women's championships, but I grew up going to men's basketball games, and to a lesser extent football, and didn't get into women's bball til college. Also I dont live in NC but there is also the bragging rights factor, when unc fans talk about how much we suck, wbb isn't going to change the tune for 90%.
3/13/2022 11:15:41 AM
I don't really give a shit about what UNC fans say
3/13/2022 1:47:24 PM
I would argue that we have been in a position to seize the ACC title in football (or at least division title) but we’ve just failed to do it. 2021 was an opportunity. 2017 and 2010 too. 2022 looks to be another legit opportunity. Football is different since it’s a regular season (plus title game) award. And being in a division with Clemson and FSU has historically made it nearly impossible to come out ahead of one or both of them over the course of a season. Since basketball is a tournament, you just need to get hot for a few days and catch a couple breaks with the bracket. I’m disappointed by our lack of overall success, I do want to make that clear.[Edited on March 13, 2022 at 2:55 PM. Reason : H]

^^congrats!Point is, it's ok to care more about some sports than others
3/13/2022 3:03:34 PM
Yeah, i don't care about wrestling or baseball! They're dumb non-revenue as sports and also dumb sports in general!

3/10/2023 12:35:59 PM
^South Carolina and NC State.
