Well, it's not like it would be the first time. We franchised Muhammad a few years back. If you do that though you are basically accepting the fact that you've got the player for one more year and then he is gone, because franchising someone pretty much blows up any negotiations.
2/11/2009 8:59:35 AM
except that Moose wanted to play here and Peppers does not and we are going to go get what we can for him
2/11/2009 9:01:06 AM
I didn't want to make a thread for this but I just heard on Mike and Mike that Roy Williams is on the cover of the Detroit Lions 2009 calendar. Quite a fuckup by the marketing department.
2/11/2009 9:12:10 AM
Well guess what I wasn't talking about Peppers at all. I was referring to the discussion on the last page about Gross.
2/11/2009 9:38:05 AM
Well guess what Gross ain't goin anywhere...we will give Gross a good contract this year and i think we'll end up releasing Ken Lucas in the long run to free up cap space.[Edited on February 11, 2009 at 11:02 AM. Reason : .]

Reading comprehension. No where have I suggested that we franchise Jordan Gross. It's blatantly obvious to everyone that Julius Peppers will be the one tagged. My post was a response to this one:
2/11/2009 11:14:30 AM
the only way we use the tag on Gross is if it looks like Pep is gone and Gross wants too much money...if long term contracts are out of the question for both of them but we can franchise one of them, AND if through our talks with other teams we find out a team will be willing to give us more/better picks for Gross than Peppers, then and only then would we franchise Gross

Good lord Peppers is turning into a little bitch. I'd never say that to his face though

agreed on both points
2/14/2009 4:07:19 PM
4 more days to get the deal done with Gross
2/14/2009 6:06:58 PM
he shows his fair-weather, spoiled-rotten, "La Rez whine and cheese" UNC roots in the end.... I was hoping he would be dominant for our Dline for a dozen years or so. Oh well. Time to start rethinking all these UNC draft picks, Charlotte... the proof is in the pudding...
2/16/2009 12:02:25 PM
I think Peppers is an idiot. He's too small to play in a 3-4 and he'll get run all over.
2/16/2009 12:18:57 PM
he's too small? what?
2/16/2009 12:28:43 PM
Pretty sure he's wanting to play as one of the wide linebackers, not on the d-line.

wow. I am kind of excited about the blockbuster Peppers trade to happen: maybe we end up alot better because of it? If he doesnt want to play here then we have to trade him - I dont want another Jenkins (who was also talented but underpeformed with us because he was moody).....
2/16/2009 11:02:43 PM
Peppers wants to play in a 3-4?Fuck it.TO ARIZONAFOR ANQUANWE DONT GIVE A FUCK[Edited on February 16, 2009 at 11:07 PM. Reason : shit, jake would be super jesus with smitty and boldin]
2/16/2009 11:05:58 PM
losing peppers and all those D coordinators really leaves alot of ?'s on defense.... I see most of our leveraged offseason moves going to boost the D. Don't expect the blockbuster trade to be for a QB
2/16/2009 11:19:17 PM
^^ That all sounds great except that Arizona doesn't use the 3-4 Pep sees James Harrison playing his ideal position and winning the Def POY and he thinks he can do it too. The problem is he has never played a game at LB on the college or pro level. That leaves huge question marks for potential traders at 16 mil pricetag. I think he would fit well with SF's unit and Singletary would love to have him. Plus, we would get the 10th pick. Sounds nice in theory I guess.
2/17/2009 1:09:55 PM
uhwhisenhunt loves the 3-4
2/17/2009 1:26:46 PM
but do they run it? Simple Question
2/17/2009 2:11:42 PM
they have in the past.[Edited on February 17, 2009 at 2:28 PM. Reason : dont fucking rolly eyes me.]

So you get angry when I call you out for suggesting one of the stupidest ideas ever for a pep trade and then tell me not to roll eyes you. How about suggesting something feasible and we can talk about the best options for the panthers and I wont do it again.
2/17/2009 2:56:28 PM

Along with SF.. Cleveland could also be a fit for a Peppers trade if we can get Gross signed to an extension and use the franchise tag on Peppers. Mangini now in at coach, so they will keep the 3-4. They are fairly week at OLB/DE, and you know Mangini loves the athletic guys who can play both. Signed Calvin Pace and drafted Vernhon Golston last year in NY. They have the #5 pick which would be awesome. Maybe get BJ Raji to plug in the middle of the line. I know we don't have to trade Peppers to a team running a 3-4(correct me if im wrong), but just playing around with the idea.
2/17/2009 6:33:58 PM
I can't wait until we play Peppers' new team, and Brad Hoover flattens that motherfucker before D-Will or J-Stew scurries quickly past his lifeless bodyok maybe not lifeless, but i couldnt think of an exciting enough adjective for "lying on the ground"
2/17/2009 6:39:05 PM
Oh I didn't realize he wanted to play LB... i thought he was planning on playing DE in 3-4 hence the too small comment
2/17/2009 7:14:56 PM
That's the only reason I can think of that he would want to play in a 3-4.. All DE's in a 3-4 really do is take up blockers. Maybe he wants to be used kind of like Pace for NYJ and Suggs for Baltimore. They play standing up, but also play on the line some too.
2/17/2009 7:36:20 PM
He wants to be DeMarcus Ware. The problem is, Ware has a motor that works all the time. Peppers does not. Also, as fluid an athlete as Peppers is, he's going to find out that dropping back into pass coverage every other play gets extremely old.Oh well. Good riddance.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3916583Make up your damn mind. If you don't want to play for us, then don't be so damn picky. Only teams in NFC that play 3-4 are Dallas and San Fran. Not sure I can see him wanting to go to San Fran though. I am ready to get Gross signed so we can tag Peppers and make sure to get something for him

dang, guess we can thank pep for having to overpay gross. i mean he's good, but not THAT good
2/19/2009 11:36:11 AM
I heard on the radio that of the 4 teams that peppers has on his list 3 are NFC (including the cowboys) and 1 AFC. I'm just guessing but I have a sneaky suspicion that the Redskins are on there. I know they dont fit the defensive mold that Pep wants though. There are a few teams that fit the mold in the AFC and I feel like he wants to be on a contender. So here is my best guess list:1. Dallas2. Washington3. SF4. SD/NYJ/TENN(less likely NE/BAL)I'm going to check into where these teams are picking in the 1st round
2/19/2009 12:36:41 PM
do they still have "transition player" designation in the NFL? If yes, why couldn't we just make Gross a transition player, and Peppers a franchise player? or vice versa.
2/19/2009 1:28:38 PM
its done...Gross with the 6 year contract...30.5 million guaranteed in his first 3 yearslooks like Peppers lost all of his bargaining power...time to tag him and send him to a shitty team for him to rot
2/19/2009 1:37:00 PM
1:47PM The Panthers have formally placed their franchise tag on defensive end Julius Peppers.

KC got a 1st and 2 3rd round picks for Jared Allen last year so that is probably a good place to start. Of the possible teams the first roundDallas - no 1st round pick (sent to Detroit in Roy Williams trade)Washington - 13thSF - 10thSD - 16thNYJ - 17thTENN - 30thBALT - 26thNE - 23rdKiper has his first round up and I see that he projescts DE/OLB Aaron Maybin from Penn State to SF with the 10th pick. That sounds like exactly the position that Peppers is interested in. If SF needs front seven help and has the picks to do it they should be our first choice. Hopefully, Peppers would agree to terms with them. Washington also is projected to take DE Brian Orakpo from Texas. Seems like they always get robbed in these big trades so I would love to get them involved. The problem is that if pep wants to play LB really then he is going to take a huge pay cut. LB's don't make nearly the money of a premier DE. He would be smart to sign as DE and get a lineman # and then drop in pass coverage every now and then instead of playing LB and making half the money he would have normally.
