newer MBPs can boot to the internet and do a full recovery with no media at all. Try that?

When you say you have a bad hard drive, do you mean the HD is physically broken or something's just wrong with the file system? Can you just boot into recovery (command R on boot) and fix things from there?

is there some way to get a vm or something with mac os x so I can get some exposure to it without having to buy a mac computer/laptop?

really all I want is a shell for it.

Yes you can run OSX in a VM in Windows or Linux.
