that they even have the cajones to do so says enough. That is how everything else started. So yes, it will happen. And it is disgusting.

Sure, well, you know, if the Coloreds had just learned to read, they could have voted. Jim Crow, who?

Also I think it's fantastically better for gay people to marry women they don't love. I think that definitely helps to preserve the fidelity of the traditional institution of marriage.

The mere fact someone might sue a church for not marrying them is irrelevant. People sue for stupid shit 24/7.

"Marriage equality in California is now losing by 5 points, according to the latest poll numbers.

Until that poll, we were leading in California. What happened? Anti-LGBT groups are winning the fundraising battle by more than $10 million – and their vicious, untrue ads are everywhere.

Our lead has slipped, but victory is still within reach.
...

Anti-LGBT forces are organizing and mobilizing furiously, raising money hand over fist, ginning up fear and resentment. Groups like Focus on the Family, members of the Mormon Church, and even the national Knights of Columbus have provided significant funding.

Wake up on November 5th knowing you did everything you could. "

What hope does gay marriage even have as a states right if the republican base is just going to try to try to pay away the state rights and decisions that they don't like?

Not that I expect anyone will, but if you want to give a donation that will be doubled through matching, you can here (the HRC wont be able to outspend them, but hopefully than can not fall too far behind):

meh, the only cases I've really been able to find were in other nations. I do recall hearing about it, but I haven't been able to find it. by all means, though, go ahead and google some, too. While you are at it, you can read all of the interesting commentary, on both sides, where they discuss the very topic I mentioned (not the court case, obviously)

I did google. I found zip, nadda, nothing. You are the one who made the claim. You have to back up your claim.

and do you want to know why they can do that in other countries? Those churches are subsidized with taxpayer money.

Not that I expect anyone will, but if anyone wants to donate to help put this ad on the air in CA, there's the link for it (click the first entitled "No on Prop 8"). Has to be by Sunday to get the matching donation, and the sooner the better since early voting is already underway.

^They might have a good cause and all, but demonizing the shit out of Mormons isn't exactly the best way to prove that. I don't even like Mormons and I feel mildly insulted.

Also, almost all these commercials are nearly as annoying and pseudo-trendy as actual Apple commercials. But I guess people in California must like that sort of thing... whatever.

They are leading the pro-discrimination charge and are the main financial backers of it. Most of the $20 million from the Mormon church has come out of Utah and into California's airwaves. Obama came out against Prop 8 and the Mormon church bought an ad saying Obama was for Prop 8.

They are getting what they've paid for though, the funds from the Mormon church have had a significant affect on the polls, and a bit of a backlash against their church.

So the Mormon church is the primary backer of this piece of legislation? That changes things... if they were just contributors, I'd have a problem with them being singled out and attacked... but if they're essentially the driving force behind it... well, have at them.

Still, though, the commercials are pseudo-hipster shit on par or even below Apple ads. But at least that's not a moral issue, just an annoyance.

Many groups are playing different roles in this proposition, but ultimately if you had to pare it down to the two main groups fighting over this proposition it would be the Mormons in Utah & the gay groups and citizens in California. Let alone the fact that changing a constitution to add discrimination is wrong, this proposition should fail because it is a Utah vs California battle to decide what California’s constitution says.

1 day until I know if I can continue with my planned marriage in CA, the only state w/ legal marriage equality that I already have family in, or if I have to scrap that altogether and start over. I have a place to stay for free in CA & a lot of help to plan it out there, I really hope Utah doesn't pay away rights in CA.

"Fox News Lies About Obama/No on 8 Rally in Monterey (+)
by: Fritz
Mon Nov 03, 2008 at 18:13:55 PM EST

On Sunday, I attended a rally at Monterey's Window on the Bay that was organized by the local Democratic Club and No on 8. About 250 supporters of Obama and opponents of Prop. 8 showed up to hold a joint rally.

During the rally, between 25 to 30 McCain supporters arrived to give a counter demonstration, heckling us with slogans such as "B.O. stinks" and "Go back to Russia!" And, those McCain supporters began to leave shortly after the No on 8 folks showed up in force. A few I spoke to as they were leaving said they didn't want to protest a No on 8 rally.

The rally lasted from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with huge crowds holding Obama and No on 8 signs.

So, I was somewhat shocked when the local Fox affiliate ran the following story:

The story should have focused on the number of people who showed up to oppose Prop. 8. Instead, the reporter said that both supporters and opponents of Prop. 8 were there. That's not true. There was one -- and only one -- Prop. 8 supporter very early on. He left after about 30 minutes. There was only one other person holding a Yes on 8 sign and he picked it up from the ground (I have photos showing that to be the case). You will notice in the video not a single Yes on 8 sign is shown. That's because there weren't any!

The story should have been "Hundreds of Obama supporters and opponents of Prop. 8 joined forces today in Monterey..."

Instead, Fox News was deliberately deceptive. They focused on the few McCain supporters and marginalized the No on 8 and Obama supporters who were there in much larger numbers.

If you want to see what was really going on at Window on the Bay, check out my Flickr set for the event.

http://flickr.com/photos/fritzliess/sets/72157608604588504/detail/

You will clearly see that only a handful of McCain supporters showed up to make their presence known. This was obviously an Obama/No on 8 rally -- NOT a shared event between Democrats and Republicans.

I don't know how Fox gets away with simply inventing stories like this. They went out and took video of what was obviously a huge turnout for both Obama and No on 8 and made it seem as if there was equal representation by the opposition. That's a lie -- a total fabrication."

Fair and balanced.

looks like they are going to remove an existing right by adding discrimination into their constitution by a close enough margin that the $20 mormon money from utah will have made the difference... i mean there still isn't enough of a result to call it for sure, but the anti-marriage equality is winning... i guess they didn't want the economic boost that having a significant percentage of the country's population going there to get married
