^^That was my school, back in the day (East Lincoln). When I first heard the story, I was just hoping it would have been West Lincoln. And yeah, that is the Broncos' logo, just green and orange. The one they used to have was just a horseshoe, like the Colts. But, they changed to the Bronco while I was there. I guess they couldn't find a Mustang to copy.

You realize they used an extremely vague law to charge him? I think they just wanted to get him because he was near the president's aircraft with a firearm. I don't see anything inherently wrong with that, unless firearms were prohibited on the property. I don't know that they are prohibited at that airport though.

That GATTOTP law is utter bullshit, he didn't even break that law IMO. They just didn't have anything real to get him on, so they fucked him in the ass with a bullshit charge. If he was legally carrying and just chilling at the airport watching Air Force One, I don't see the issue. This is what that law states:

"By common law in North Carolina, it is unlawful for a person to arm himself/herself with any unusual and dangerous weapon, for the purpose of terrifying others, and go about on public highways in a manner to cause terror to others. The N.C. Supreme Court states that any gun is an unusual and dangerous weapon for purposes of this offense."

It's bullshit, he didn't have the weapon with the intent of terrifying anyone and from what I can tell he didn't "go about on public highways in a manner to cause terror to others." The law is so loosely worded that you can be fucked for anything really. Even a concealed carry permit holder doing NOTHING ILLEGAL can get fucked in the ass by this law. Unless he was brandishing it, I don't see how they have a leg to stand on. They just got angry that he was watching the aircraft and had a firearm. There is nothing illegal about being an armed citizen interested in aviation. If it had been illegal to carry on that property they'd have hit him with a different charge. I honestly don't see how this will hold up in court, he should win this case IMO.

Quote :

Without knowing full details, I'd hesitate to call him an asshole. I don't know that he broke any laws really, are firearms not allowed there? If he had been carrying illegally they'd have hit him with a charge besides GATTOTP. That is a charge they could give you when they honestly have no reason to think an actual crime having been committed, yet still want to arrest you. It seriously looks like a case of them searching for something to arrest him for rather than him being an "asshole".

Again, I'm not filled in on the details, but he may have just been sitting there legally carrying a concealed handgun. Honestly, a handgun probably isn't even going to hit an aircraft very easily and if it did, I doubt it would do much damage unless you got in a lucky shot. If his intent was to bring the aircraft down or kill the president I think he'd have done it differently. There are better ways to do so. Somehow I think he was just an armed aviation enthusiast, but I could be wrong.

I'm still wondering what laws he ACTUALLY broke. I mean, he had reciprocity here I assume. He didn't carry where he wasn't allowed to carry from what I know so far. I don't think he had the gun in his hand or anything. He was doing what any concealed carry permit holder can do every single day in this state as far as I can tell. It seems like he was sitting there, legally armed. It just so happened that the President's aircraft was at the airport. Are you not allowed to have the means to protect yourself if the president is at the same airport you are? I don't get it honestly. What the fuck is the deal here?

Well, I don't know. I mean, it seems like he was a good distance away, so I wouldn't necessarily call it that at all.

Again, without knowing the details of the case, from here it looks like he was perfectly within his rights to be there and be armed. Like I said, I can't see how he will lose this court case. It seems like he tried to get away from the airport property and the ramp to make sure he wasn't too close. To me it seems like he was trying to be reasonable about the whole thing and they came out there and searched him, found a firearm and then looked for a loophole to arrest him on. He wasn't breaking any laws from what I can see. I haven't seen a law that indicates you cannot be legally armed near an airport while the president takes off, but I may be off there. I just don't see how they'll be able to prove in court, beyond a reasonable doubt, that he broke that law. Perhaps the jury will be a bunch of shitbag anti-gun fucks who want to make an example out of him, but in this state it's entirely possible they'll be reasonable.

He wasn't terrorizing ANYONE from what I can tell. Nobody even knew he was armed until he was searched, which means nobody could have possibly been terrified by his weapon since they had no knowledge of it. He couldn't have been armed on public highways with the intent to cause terror if nobody ever knew he was armed. You have to brandish the firearm to cause terror and he didn't do so from what I've seen so far. I don't want to read too much about it though because it's going to get me all worked up.

"Racial tensions roil NC school board; 19 arrests

By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press Writer Mike Baker, Associated Press Writer – Tue Jul 20, 7:47 pm ET

RALEIGH, N.C. – Protesters and police scuffled Tuesday at a school board meeting in North Carolina over claims that a new busing system would resegregate schools, roiling racial tensions reminiscent of the 1960s.

Nineteen people were arrested, including the head of state NAACP chapter who was banned from the meeting after a trespassing arrest at a June school board gathering.

"We know that our cause is right," the Rev. William Barber said shortly before police put plastic handcuffs on his wrists before the meeting started.

Inside, more than a dozen demonstrators disrupted the meeting by gathering around a podium, chanting and singing against the board's policies.

After several minutes, Raleigh police intervened and asked them to leave. When they refused, the officers grabbed arms and tried to arrest the protesters. One child was caught in the pushing and shoving, as was school board member Keith Sutton, who was nearly arrested before authorities realized who he was.

"Hey, hey, ho, ho, resegregation has got to go," some protesters chanted.

Sutton said he went into the crowd to try and calm things down and encourage officers not to use such strong force. He said he felt insulted that he almost got arrested and believes the officer who tried to detain him owes him an apology.

"I'm just real dismayed and disappointed," Sutton said.

The Wake County School Board has voted multiple times over the last several months to scrap the district's diversity policy, which distributed students based on socioeconomics and for years had been a model for other districts looking to balance diversity in schools. Several school board members elected last year have built a majority in favor of focusing on neighborhood schools.

The board's chairman, Ron Margiotta, said the panel would not be distracted in its effort to "provide choice and increased stability for families."

"This board does not intend to create high poverty or low-performing schools," he said to scoffs from the crowd.

At a morning rally that drew 1,000 people, speakers quoted Martin Luther King Jr., remembered the days of segregated water fountains and likened the current situation to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education battle. Barber talked about America's legacy of racial strife to galvanize the crowd.

"Too many prayers were prayed," Barber said. "Too many lives were sacrificed. Too much blood was shed. Too many tears were shed. We can't turn back now."

Barber's supporters believe the new policy will resegregate schools. They carried signs that read: "Segregate equals hate" and "History is not a mystery. Separate is always unequal."

George Ramsay, a white former student body president of Enloe High School, said it was necessary to keep the diversity policy in place to prepare students for an increasingly connected world.

"It is shortsighted to ignore the way students like me have been enriched by diversity," Ramsay said.

(This version CORRECTS Edits third paragraph to add first reference to NAACP leader Barber and edits eighth paragraph to correct the last name of the board member mentioned in a previous paragraph.)"

It seems every time NC is in the national news it is never good, usually quite bad, for instance I
just saw this gem on CNN HLN

N*GGER's Dont tip is blurred out but it was printed on her reciet

This particular subject might be old to some (I literally just saw it) but I think we could use a thread dedicated to bad national coverage for NC

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Authorities suspected foul play when the body of a North Carolina man surfaced near a South Florida beach.

Turns out 48-year-old Scott Lasky died from Lou Gehrig's Disease on September 8. A fisherman spotted the body about four miles offshore in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday after his burial at sea went awry.

Broward Sheriff's deputies solved the mystery after finding Lasky's obituary. Authorities said his family placed his body on dry ice, loaded him in a van and drove from Hickory, N.C. to Florida to honor his dying wish. Family members boarded a boat and bid Lasky what they thought was their final goodbye until his body resurfaced.

Sea burials are legal but certain rules must be followed. The body has to sink to the bottom rapidly and permanently.

The truth is actually more fucked up than the mattress rumor.

Quote :
"The papers go on to say "that Zahra Baker was deceased, that her body had been dismembered, and that it would be recovered at different sites."

The next day Baker accompanied investigators to three different locations, including Christie Road in Caldwell County where investigators later found a bone, identified as coming from Zahra, and a prosthetic leg that was hers.

Another site identified by Baker, according to the court papers, was the Dudley Shoals Road area in a remote area of Caldwell County. It was at that location where investigators found human remains last week that they say are believed to be those of a child."

No doubt, there's a lot more bias in the video than there should be; there's simply no room in the abstract of an objective meta-analysis for opinions like " given his considerable contribution to the field of strength training, academic recognition of this contribution is long overdue." That's why I was careful to list plenty of caveats when I posted it. To be fair though, a large part of why they apparently wrote the article was to show that if you believe the peer-reviewed scientific literature, some of those claims are not actually as ridiculous as "accepted knowledge" would lead you to believe.

Perhaps it would have been better for me to also point out that although I'm no expert, there are still some objections that even I could spot.

Some of those are related to the science itself. There's not a lot of discussion of how the studies being analyzed were sampled, so we don't know how representative they all are. Part of the impression of bias is due to the fact that they point out a number of other meta-analyses that don't include some studies that support Arthur Jones-like recommendations, but then they fail to adequately discuss their own literature search.

They don't delve into the details of studies deeply enough either, mostly taking the conclusions at face value rather than stratifying the studies by design type and inclusion of various confounders. It would be good to know, for instance, if more of the particular studies they're citing were performed on beginning lifters, experienced strength athletes, or other athletes; this is occasionally mentioned, but a good meta-analysis should have at least one table with some summary statistics about the studies being evaluated. Knowing more about how studies controlled (or didn't) for nutrition and recovery strategies would also be very useful.

Other objections relate to linking the scientific conclusions to practical application and recommendations; there is a definite gap here that the authors don't address well. Good scientific experiments are very controlled, so the workouts being performed probably don't resemble what a normal person would do. Most people probably aren't as disciplined and regimented about their workouts, either, etc.

So yes, lots of potential problems with the study. Despite all that, it's a peer-reviewed meta-analysis in a well-respected journal, so there's presumably some value in that. Like I said before, it's working well for me at the moment, but I'm not super attached to it and will reevaluate whenever I start to hit a plateau. Everyone's mileage may vary.
