lol i know it sounded bad. he's actually one of the top obgyn doctors in texas, so he's legit. and for the record, hes the best gyn i've ever been to.

You break the suction to pull it out keeping it upright, dump it, clean it out with some TP or wash in your sink, and then merrily plug it back in. When you're learning you're going to get some blood on your fingers- it's not a huge deal, just wash it off.

I like to use olive oil to insert it if I'm at home in the morning, because it can be dry from sitting out overnight. Also you have to make a U shape to insert it at first, then it will pop into its circular shape in the vagina. Pushing it up also ensures the stem isn't sitting too low- else I feel it on the bicycle. If it leaks I inserted it improperly.

so my wife is considering getting the Mirena IUD. She has tried various other forms of BC and the side affects are terrible for her. She's tried several different pills and the NUVA ring. Right now we aren't using any BC at all (just pull and pray) but have gone way too long like this and we are scared that statistics will catch up with us. For you ladies who have had the IUD for an extended period of time, what is your opinion?

How long is extended? I have had mine for right at a year and I love it. Stopped having periods as soon as I got it. The day of I was a little crampy for the rest of the evening but the next morning was totally back to normal. It did hurt getting it put in, but it's supposedly easier on women who have already had a child.

What side effects is she having? I went from pills to Nuva back to pills because even though I loved the ring for nearly a year it started messing with me after that. Before I went on BC I had horrendous cramps, which the pill got rid of, then I didn't have them for a year with the ring and they randomly started again. I have had a few light cramps with the Mirena, but nothing at all compared to what I had before. I chose the IUD because 1) nothing to think about every day/month/even year 2) lessened/stopped periods are awesome 3) cost me the $25 office visit copay and that's it for 5 years.

I want a mirena but my doc wouldnt give it to me because i have never had kids but plan to one day. supposedly hurts like a bitch when it first goes in, but awesome for the length of time.

I hated the ring! made me so edgy and crampy and evil. im on depo show now and its aight. just worried about losing all my hair and my bones breaking. hoping to switch to implanon soon.

sparky, if she is having major problems with hormonal BC, and she's tried several with the same problems, Mirena may not be the best idea. While the manufacturer and the OB-Gyns generally say the hormonal dosage is too low to cause a problem, there's a ton of anecdotal evidence suggesting otherwise. If insurance will cover multiple insertions and she wants to take a chance with it, it seems really great to have light to nonexistent periods. I was tired of dealing with BC issues, so I went straight to the Paragard. Which has its own issues (frequent & heavy periods) but no arthritis and no pull-n-pray.

I love it. I never get a period but I have had some cramping lately and am a little worried that it needs to be checked. I would totally recommend it but note- worst pain. I went in pretty heavily drugged up and still would be hesitant to do it again unless they put me under.

I absolutely love my IUD. I've had mine for almost 4.5 years now. Not excited about having to have it taken out in August and getting a new one, but that's just one day and it'll give me another 5 years of awesomeness.

I haven't had any problems with it. I have basically no period, about every three months I may spot overnight or for a day, but so lightly I really don't even need a pad or tampon or anything. I used to have very painful periods and lots of issues with them.

I can't believe I have had mine long enough to require Mirena #2. But it has been 5 years this month and time for the ole switcharoo....

Wouldnt go back to traditional bc unless something psycho changes and I mysteriously was diagnosed with the cray cray....

^Yea, we are looking at that too. Our youngest turns 4 in a couple of months, so once he turns 5, it'll be time to trade up for another.

this is basically it. she loved the NUVA ring for about a year and then she started getting really moody to the point of almost bat shit crazy. she's been off the NUVA ring for about 4 months now and feels great but we are getting nervous about the ol' pull-n-pray.
