You killed Bambi......you should be ashamed. Although the other night, Bambi decided he wanted to introduce himself to the corner of my car.
11/14/2007 3:48:13 PM
bambi is tasti though
11/14/2007 3:48:46 PM
I thought this thread was about killing an unnamed person.
11/14/2007 3:49:46 PM
No, I didn't kill Bambi. Bambi was a male roe deer in the original book, but was a male white-tail in the movie. I killed a doe, so sort of Bambi's mother. Except, its kinda dumb to call all deer "Bambi"... that's like calling all pigs "Wilbur", or all chickens "Chicken Little", or all rats "Templeton"...And I should not be ashamed - I intended to kill that deer. You should be ashamed for being so irresponsible and killing things "on accident". Also, I took that deer home... I bet you left it laying in the road. Not even getting out to get it out of the road and being considerate of other drivers.[Edited on November 14, 2007 at 7:52 PM. Reason : ]

i still think you should only be allowed one of 3 weapons in deer hunting:a bow and arrow (old school kind, not the shit thats just about a gun they have now), a big knife, or some indian-type weapon. and your bare hands (so maybe 4 weapons).now that's what i'd call a fucking sport.
11/14/2007 8:17:35 PM
People underestimate the advantages a deer has in the woods. They have greater sight, scent, and hearing than humans by a tremendous amount. That being said, once the deer is located, thousands of years of evolution and opposable thumbs give us a decided advantage.
11/14/2007 8:27:59 PM
you people are arguing with hippies/faggots. Do you realize where that puts you on the food chain?

Anybody else on here like squirrel or am I the only one?
11/14/2007 10:20:19 PM
^ Yes. Squirrel is good, if its cooked right. Otherwise, it tastes like rodent.

Think about it.. 1/2 ton (maybe more) vehicle catching a deer's fragile legs... You wounded it, it has now drug itself off into a field where it will be defenseless against a predator or it will starve to death. Way to go.[Edited on November 16, 2007 at 12:16 AM. Reason : ]

if you run over a deer, is it kosher to claim said deer like you would one that you murdered with a gun?i mean, say you^, hit a deer. would you load it up and have your way with it like you do a shot deer?[Edited on November 16, 2007 at 12:21 AM. Reason : by have you way with it, i mean make it into burgers and mocasins ]
11/16/2007 12:20:24 AM
Yes. If it was dead, I would get out, approach it, and load it up. Take it home, skin, clean, and quarter it. Of course, some meat will be bad and not edible - so it would get (maybe cooked and) fed to the dogs. If it was not dead - I would either finish it off myself, or if I had nothing in my truck - I would call someone else to bring a knife or something else to come finish it off. I would not leave an animal in the road, leave an animal suffering, or leave it to be somoene else's problem. Its best to put an animal out of its misery when it is beyond natural healing.Does it not piss you off to be driving down a dark road real late at night and have to swerve to miss a deer in THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD? It sure does make me mad that people are so inconsiderate.
11/16/2007 12:26:25 AM
i've only come across dead ones on the side of the road.i mean, if you hit it hard enough to kill it in its tracks, you probably fucked up your car pretty badly, so im guessing you'd have to get out and look over the damage or get a tow truck or something, and you'd probably move it out of your way, i.e.) off the road[Edited on November 16, 2007 at 12:30 AM. i had some venison for the first time at a nice restaraunt the other night, honestly that shit tasted like a tough, sour version of veal. not "gamey", just "off". does that mean they probably spilled the bile and other gastric contents into the meat during gutting?
11/16/2007 12:29:40 AM
^^ Man, I hate coming down Centennial at night during the rut becauce there can be some BIG deer in the road, taking up an entire lane... you either swerve or run straight over it. I don't pick up other people's roadkill because that's just... well, odd. We got a call a few weeks ago from some friends who had a doe pull herself from the road to another area. They saw her unable to get up and you know what had happened... so they finished her off. We went and got her and processed her a few minutes later.^ Honestly, some people/places do not know what they are doing when it comes to cooking deer... I have never paid to eat deer, so I would be pissed if it wasn't awesome. Its possible that there was either bile or urine on it, but more than likely, it just wasn't cooked correctly. If you know what you're doing whrn gutting, its pretty hard to burst the gut or bladder...[Edited on November 16, 2007 at 12:34 AM. Reason : ]

^ i think so too. surely no one would buy meat that was spoiled from improper cleaning. but yeah that meat was tough as shit, i didnt finish it. they really didnt try to do anything fancy with it either, it was just roasted or something with minimal marinade, served alone.
11/16/2007 12:35:32 AM
Too much marinade can take away from the real flavor of the game. There are so many game laws against selling wild game as it is, I can't imagine anyone trying to sell bad meat. Deer CAN be tough, mainly from overcooking - or the nature of the kill. If it runs a country mile before death, you can bet on tough meat. You need some deer of your own to experiment with or you need some that was cooked right! Just do yourself a favor and DO NOT let that experience ruin your willingness to eat game![Edited on November 16, 2007 at 12:41 AM. Reason : ]

oh i'll eat anything if im hungry enough. right now i would need to be a 7/10 on the hungry scale to order venison again...perhaps after a better experience that will go down to say 4 or 5 (for example, a good steak ranks 2-3 for me)
11/16/2007 12:43:12 AM
Where were you when you ordered venison? I don't think I would ever order venison, personally, but something more rare to me like elk or bison I would try.

i've been pretty clutch this season at hunting. i killed my first one ever with a bow and arrow, my first year ever bow hunting, a three pointer:and then i killed this eight pointer a few weekends ago, which will be going on the wall:bethaleigh, you said that doe was 150 lbs??? i'm not seeing it, this eight pointer was a big deer, and it only weighed 160 lbs, we weighed it. whats up??? that doe looks like it may be 100-110, come on now [Edited on November 16, 2007 at 1:21 AM. 11/16/2007 1:20:09 AM
She was about 150 including guts, we didn't dress her until we got her home. She probably was about 100ish once dressed. We did not weigh her, but my Dad has killed soooooo many deer and he is usually spot on when it comes to his estimates. You can't tell from the pictures how big around she was, but her belly was BIG, (but she wasn't all that fatty like I kinda expected her to be.)(That Husky in the pic, you can't see him all that well, but he weighs about 110-115. She DEFINITELY had quite a bit on him! )
11/16/2007 9:09:35 AM
well, the buck i killed was 160 with the guts also. none the less, i didn't see the doe but i would put 120 tops on her. thats my guess. 85-90 lbs dressed out. either way, gg.

I didn't read the WHOLE thread so forgive me if this is a repeat.....Anyone else noticed the overwhelming amount of deer killed on interstates lately, or is it just me?Driving home on 540 is like a visual blood bath on the pavement. EwwwI'd rather someone at least get meat out of them, than see them ruing someone's car & lay curled up in a ball dead in the road. And for the record, I'm not going to stop eating steak and chicken, either.

^^^you know, i have hunted with rifles and shotguns all my life and just got into bow hunting this year. i will agree with you, bow hunting is definitely more sport/skill worthy than rifle hunting. i had an awesome time at it. being the longtime rifle hunter that i am, i would still support a law against rifle hunting and move to only shotguns or bow and arrow. i don't think its fair to shoot one 150 yds plus. i do believe it takes skill to kill one with a bow and arrow though.

HECK YEAH! I GOT ME ANOTHER DOE THIS AFTERNOON AT ABOUT 12:30!She's not as big as the last one, but I had my pick of 5. After I shot her, the two smaller ones with her stood about 20 yards from me just looking at me for like 3 minutes. My Daddy told me to shoot one of them, but I didn't want to. After that, those 2 finally went the other direction. The other 2 left and then suddenly came back in a group of 6 or 7 does. They then stood less than 15 yards away from me, walking as close as about 8 yards. I wasn't going to shoot another one, but my Daddy got on the radio and told me to take one. So, I cocked it, and got ready when one finally saw me. I was talking on the radio for at least 3 minutes in a quiet but normal voice while they stood that close to me and never even looked my way! Once they finally did look my way - they STILL never saw me. When my foot fell asleep and I shifted was when one finally saw me and they all took off. That group of 6 or 7 only had 2 good sized does in it - but I was ready for one of them. A successful day putting meat in the freezer!
