It's already been released to manufacturing as of February 4th ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/bb738089.aspx ) and then Microsoft made it available to TechNet and MSDN customers on February 14th and they speculate a full public release in mid-March ( http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/tags/SP1/default.aspx )[Edited on February 21, 2008 at 12:30 AM. any word on whether or not it will fix some compatibility issues and not eat so many resources?

Hah, right. That's a good one

just for clarification, they pulled an update, not the service pack

Yay came out today!http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/21/microsoft-lets-loose-vista-sp1-for-x64-based-systems/Just waiting for my windows update to see it.
2/21/2008 3:08:01 PM
any (legal) way to download this separately from running windows update? i'd rather download it here at work where it's quicker anywayi know you could download the XP service packs as separate files
2/21/2008 3:30:42 PM
I don't have it as an available update, and I'm x64
2/21/2008 6:05:13 PM
I downloaded it from MSDN yesterday and installed it. Worked flawlessly. Seems to be much the same as the beta version. Bit more stable, faster network file transfers, etc. I'd recommend it. I did make sure I had that problematic windows update installed first.[Edited on February 21, 2008 at 6:37 PM. Reason : ]

^^They "roll" it out. Don't know exactly what this means but it doesn't show up on everyones computer first. Like i got it first, then my other roommate, and my third roommate hasn't gotten it yet. [Edited on February 21, 2008 at 7:24 PM. Reason : .]

installing SP1 for the x64 ultimate edition right now...we'll see how it works outon a related note, i just a couple of days ago got this x64 version installed on the laptop...i've got 4gb of RAM and it's consistently hovering between 35-50% usage just being on doing "normal" things (like posting on tdbu )really, this is very different from my initial experience with vista...assuming SP1 doesn't trash my system (which i don't expect it will do), i'm pretty happy with vista's snappiness...i'm running aero with nvidia 8400GS graphics, so maybe that has something to do with it (i mean, it's a laptop), but i'm really pretty impressed...as it's been mentioned before, i don't really care that vista USE the memory it has available, since that's why it's theremy 7200rpm seagate drive (with PMR) should be here next week, so i wonder if that'll help as well
2/23/2008 10:33:31 AM
alright, question:how do i change the locations of the user's folder link on the desktop in vista? i've tried googling, but the vast majority of what i get refers to changing the location of those individual folders that you access once you've clicked the user's link on the desktop...i can't believe it's this difficult - i'm sure i'm not the only one that has "my documents" on separate partition in order to preserve them in case of a system crash or reinstall, and yet i can't for the life of me figure out how do this in vista...or is vista just that retarded?
2/23/2008 8:07:38 PM
It's not that difficult, I'm surprised you couldn't find it in a Google search ... but anyway, I'm lazy and didn't want to type it all up myself so I did a quick Google search:http://www.google.com/search?q=change+users+folders+vistaNote: When you are done with this, use MKLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_symbolic_link to create a symbolic link from C:\Users to wherever you put your Users directory, that way programs with hard-coded links will not be broken.BTW, This is the first result from the search:http://joshmouch.wordpress.com/2007/04/07/change-user-profile-folder-location-in-vista/
2/23/2008 9:16:45 PM
^ thanks...i'm usually one of the first ones to sarcastically point to google, but i guess i was making my searches too specific...i'll try that out tomorrow...i do wish, however, that they had kept the XP style of "my documents"
2/23/2008 9:22:35 PM
After installing sp1 it seems like vista uses a little less ram. Used to be 30-35% and now it's 20-25%. The biggest change i noticed was the network transfer times were greatly reduced, which was a relief. Anyone notice anything else?

^^wow that dude is crazy stupid. This is even funnier:
2/24/2008 5:27:33 PM
ordered my laptop last fridaydefinitely got the ole XP Pro. put on it instead of Vista Home...
2/24/2008 7:14:16 PM
how might one get ALL of the folders in vista to display the same? i've tried doing it like i did in XP (set one folder to be exactly like i want, go into folder options, and apply to all folders) and (of course) that doesn't work worth crapi googled, but might be looking for the wrong thing...i just want ALL my folders to look the same...not this bullshit where when i add another folder/file to a particular place it resets itself to those massive icons...it's really pissing me off because i can't imagine people really want to see 4 icons to a damn window (yes, i'm exaggerating, but still)
3/1/2008 10:39:51 PM
Vista works by folder types...Like media, documents, etc... so when you hit "apply to all" it only works for folders of the same "type".To change the default for ALL folder types in Vista see this:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70819-windows-explorer-folder-view-settings.html
3/1/2008 11:57:00 PM
Don't worry, Vista has random issues with folder views, so if you set it, it may forget it. It's happened to me occasionally, still can't figure out the root cause.http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t537291.htmlIt's not a disabling problem overall, but can be annoying when it strikes.
3/2/2008 2:08:25 PM
^^ that did it just fine...i pretty much just downloaded their pre-made .reg file (after checking the manual steps to make sure i wasn't about to trash my computer)...ran the .reg, rebooted, set my folders like i wanted, applied to all folders and BAM, it worked...thanks! Btw, Vista SP1 is being pushed to Windows Update tomorrow ... but you may not be able to download it if your system has known incompatible drivers installed.http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=11116
3/17/2008 10:54:00 AM
so basically i just got done downloading sp1gonna give her a go. wish me luck
3/18/2008 9:14:31 PM
just got it and Safari
3/18/2008 10:24:43 PM
so is it worth giving vista another chance with sp1?
3/18/2008 10:32:01 PM
i can definitely tell that scanning pdfs is faster (i do it everyday for work) but photos and general flipping through folders is still slower than xp on the very same machine
3/18/2008 10:33:39 PM
Reports say that SP1 really doesn't improve that much. Maybe the reports are jumping the gun ... we'll see.Stick with XP for now unless you're feeling adventurous or just want to use something new. It's not horrible, just has random issues that crop up.
3/18/2008 11:34:35 PM
Only really big difference i noticed in sp1 was that network file transfers were faster and don't get hung up.

does vista have any built in webcam utilities?
3/19/2008 10:55:22 AM
^^ still kinda crappy compared to XP, thoughthat said, i've been running SP1 for almost a month, and i'm pretty happy with vista's stability and speed (save for the small things that everyone notices, like network transfers)
3/19/2008 10:56:29 AM
what does my post have anything to do with XP?i'll still be running XP SP3 at home until Vista comes in at a decent speed for gaming, etc...i use Vista 64-bit at work and it's awesome, great performance out of it, i think Vista really shines when it has 4+GB to work with on 64-bit.
3/19/2008 11:35:59 AM
3/19/2008 11:37:44 AM
^^yeah vista ultimate 64 bit is awesome. I currently have 4 gigs, but i'm hoping to get another 4 soon so i can disable the page file and really speed things up.
3/19/2008 6:23:17 PM
blah, no audigy 2 platinum 5.1 support eh?

I pray nightly that Windows 7 will deliver on the promises
3/22/2008 6:31:28 AM
probably not, wasn't vista supposed to be there last "OS" or am I thinking some sort of package thing they aren't doing anymore (been a few months about something that i really don't care that much about so memory of it is not exactly sharp)[Edited on March 22, 2008 at 3:35 PM. Reason : x]

So I downloaded SP1 the other day when it came out on windows update and used it fine for a couple days. Then when I got back last night from spending the weekend at my parents' house, it was sitting on a BSOD. Since last night I've had 6 different BSODs everything from Page Fault in Non-paged Area to Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal and it cycle booted once but luckily powering the system down somehow fixed that issue. I don't know for sure if this is SP1 related or completely freak accident but the computer is only a month old and its a Seagate hard drive so I don't really think it's the hardware. Also, I ran Vista for a month pre-SP1 and never had a BSOD at all. So I'm probably going to be reformatting tonight.Tried a system restore this morning but it still BSODs[Edited on March 24, 2008 at 9:31 AM. Reason : system restore]
3/24/2008 9:31:14 AM
Its Vista people, I dont know why the hell you guys are surprised you see a BSOD, especially when its just now at SP1.
3/24/2008 9:50:25 AM
^^ actually, i just installed vista for the first time on my desktop, and i've caught it shutting down once or twice...i think it's tied to folding@home, though ^ actually, i've had great luck with my laptop running vista...the desktop issue seems to be tied to beta software

yeah 2 of my roommates and i have been running 64 bit for a while with sp1. have yet to see a bsod post or pre sp1. my xp laptop is the only computer that crashes.-although it seems that vista bsods ive heard or read about have been due to older hardware. which still isnt good. running Vista Enterprise SP1 x64.... i've benchmarked a ~3.6% performance increase in CAD/BIM/3D work
3/24/2008 1:06:55 PM
My point was that I've never seen one pre-SP1 and supposedly they fixed all those bugs when they decided to wait on it and that's exactly what happened to me after SP1

looking back at XP, it didn't really turn into a success until SP2 as well... it seems to be the magic service pack number
