^ That and when people drive through my neighborhood and see unwatered and ugly lawns, it turns them off from wanting to buy, etc.

Both tall fescue and bermuda are reasonably drought resistant. Generally it will go dormant but not die, unless it is getting a lot of wear and tear.^^^^^^The use of greywater for irrigation purposes could be explored as well (further study is needed on this). It seems wasteful and unnecessary to use drinking-grade water for irrigation.[Edited on October 25, 2007 at 1:55 PM. Reason : .]

I like how in the technician yesterday they had that giant thing on the inside of the paper that said the campus was under restrictions as of like the 17th. Then I look outside my window at work here on campus and there's a guy pressure washing the brick paving in the rain. I mean seriously, I about died laughing.

go up to him, explain the situation, and he will stare blankly and say "que??"

in the past week it looks like Fall's lake recovered a whole 4 days of water
10/26/2007 12:00:18 PM
does all the rain run off that goes into drains....does that go into falls lake
10/26/2007 12:03:41 PM
A lot of the grass that I planted last fall is officially dead, but the grass that was well rooted is doing fine. The drought actually killed a huge patch of clovers that was growing in my front yard while leaving the grass around the clovers intact. I seeded where the clovers were and I'm glad they're gone. They were really taking over the front yard.
10/26/2007 12:07:19 PM
im going to buy a rain gauge and put it out by my office.i know the rain totals differ but man, we had to get more than 1.7 inches the other day

if I had a yard, I would want nothing but clover in it. What's so wrong with clover?
10/26/2007 1:43:49 PM
^^it's that they're doing it at all. When they shouldn't be.]
10/26/2007 1:45:52 PM
So how much water do we have now?Don't give me that "it's only rained 2 inches" shit either. I've gotten over a foot of rain at my house. Yes I was measuring it til my gauge overflowed.
10/26/2007 2:22:36 PM
hopefully we have gotten enough so that the doomsday alarmists will stfu for a week or so at least

i once knew someone who had moss for a front yard instead of grass. it was interesting.
10/26/2007 3:37:06 PM
I had moss outside my house when I first got it, and it actually looked nice and held up relatively well to traffic. Once I cut down a lot of the sapling pines that were shading the moss, it went away.

well our official reporting station is @ the airport so they might not have gotten as much rain as your area...and thats why you think you've gotten more than the reports indicate. I think my house could have surpassed 5" in this even and 7 in the last week
10/26/2007 5:00:30 PM
I was asking what the quantity of water in the reservoir was, not the amount of water at the airport. We don't get our drinking water from the airport.
10/26/2007 5:29:08 PM
WRAL said North Carolina needs between 15 and 25 inches of rain and six to 12 months to recover fully from the drought

I decided to be a hippy today and spend a whopping $7 on a lower-flow shower head with one of those lather shutoff valves. Also, not sure if anybody mentioned this yet, but in a lot of cases if you run full dishwasher loads, it's more efficient to use the dishwasher than it is to wash stuff by hand. It's really useful if your washer has an energy saver feature, or if you can turn off the heated dry function too (save water and reduce your potential electricity usage).Honestly the biggest savers are probably going to be lawn watering and some of the more grievous personal hygiene habits like the shower lathering thing I mentioned. I just realized I was spending so much time standing there and trying to get my damn skin/hair/whatever clean that it was wasting water. Not everybody has to spend so much time in the shower when washing, but hey, I thought I'd throw that out there. Also: Older way to reduce the amount of water your toilet uses when you flush, just fill the tank up with weighted bags or airtight containers you never want to use again. It'll reduce the actual amount of water used by your tank. Care needs to be taken to make sure you don't make things worse by preventing the toilet from flushing correctly, though...Of course there's the other things you can do: Fix water leaks, fill a cup with hot water for shaving (razor might get dirty but it's not awful), consider cooking food that doesn't require boiling water (maybe just buy those pre-done stirfry frozen food bags instead of making noodles from scratch), if you must wash your car use a bucket and a sponge and do a quick rinse before and after (or use the power wash carwash facilities that have the little sprayers). It also doesn't affect anything you'd be doing locally, but try consuming fewer beverages that are put into cans or plastic bottles. That stuff uses a sizeable amount of water in the manufacturing process as the cans are washed, etc. You could also probably reduce this effect a bit by buying stuff more in bulk (see if you can find some place that has those 3 liter bottles and refill your own water bottle with whatever soda you like or something).[/hippy stuff]
10/29/2007 4:11:25 AM
I turn the shower on full blast before I start shaving with my razor in the sink. That way it gets the shower nice and warm when I get done shaving. I also give a courtesy flush for everything, even if I piss.
