51GB HD-DVDs aren't on the market right now you fucking dolt.Yea, they've also made 200GB Blu-Rays and 1TB Holographic discs, so they're also "coming".The truth is HD-DVD's biggest release is gimped b/c it is an inferior format as of this writing.[Edited on October 19, 2007 at 12:36 PM. Reason : d]

nobody said they were, they said the current players would be able to play them

^^HD DVD isn't gimped you fanboi. 51GB > 50GB
10/19/2007 1:00:23 PM
OK you win... Which HD-DVD release is on a 51GB disc again?Oh, right... NONEMy last post was in reply to Stein, who was trying to counter my "stay in the now" point by stating that 51GB discs have been developed. And my counterpoint is: Big Whoop, they've 'developed' all kinds of shit, including Blu-Rays with capacities HD-DVD hasn't even begun to dream about. And I stand by my point: Looking at it right now, HD-DVD IS gimped. They had to cut content that would've been on the Blu-Ray version of the film to get it to fit on an HD-DVD.Are you guys really this stupid? This is like trying to argue that your 2GB flash drive can hold more content than my 4GB[Edited on October 19, 2007 at 2:12 PM. Reason : dd]

Honestly, the last thing either format needs right now is another revision in disc standards. If you think 51GB HD DVDs will play in all current HD DVD players with no problems, you're kidding yourself. If by "compatible" they mean the first two layers will be read, then sure, but most experts in the industry have agreed that at the very least the drive assembly will have to updated to be able to read the third layer. Not a firmware update, an actual physical change to the hardware. You're also kidding yourself if you think any movies will be coming on 51GB HD DVDs in the near future. It's not like Toshiba can wave a magic wand and make studios start supporting them. It's 100% up to the company releasing the films, and it's highly unlikely that these movie studios which are all hemorrhaging money are going to invest in yet another (more expensive) disc standard for a market that is still years from becoming relevant. It makes for nice headlines to suck in morons like ^^ into saying shit like "lol 51GB > 50GB", but the reality is that it's going to have almost no impact on current state of the "war".

funny how you're the only one that really sounds like a fanboy.anything Sony fails.... I'm guessing that's how they became one of biggest companies in the world, right?
10/19/2007 3:08:45 PM
wrong. Beta-max was how they became the biggest company in the world.
10/19/2007 3:09:44 PM
^I think he was thinking more along the lines of jointly developing the CD format with Philips in 1979, and then creating the Sony Discman, the first portable CD player in 1984.

10/19/2007 5:45:06 PM
hey man, dont hate on sony. I still have my beta-max and a bunch of low-def movies for it.
10/19/2007 7:21:47 PM
who cares... i mean really. HD is HD, i don't really care what format it's on as long as the price is competitive and the content is plentiful.take xbox, ps out of the equation, then talk about the formats.
10/19/2007 8:35:52 PM
10/19/2007 8:53:44 PM
well then there's not much hope in the consumer market for Blu-ray as the xbox360 and ps3 and no relevance whatsoever in the real world market. i don't even see how they can be counted as part of the adoption of the formats as a very little percentage of people actually use them for a standalone player... video game consoles are not what's going to dictate the winner of the format war.[Edited on October 19, 2007 at 11:55 PM. ^^are you defending blu ray because in a few years Sony will have 3 titles worth buying?
10/22/2007 10:26:45 AM
If you're a big fan of Heroes and own an XBox 360, then now would be a great time to jump onto the HD DVD bandwagon.Best Buy (and other retailers) are offering the 360 HD DVD add-on, King Kong HD DVD, 5 free additional HD DVDs and Heroes Season 1 on HD DVD for $180. Considering that the Heroes DVDs are about $100 at most retail stores, it's a pretty sweet deal.
10/22/2007 11:39:37 AM
I'm tempted by that offer and I don't even own a 360 (yet)[Edited on October 22, 2007 at 12:22 PM. Reason : d]

10/22/2007 1:57:56 PM
^^yeah exactly, because the Xbox will still be ahead of the PS3 as a gaming console. So it really won't tip the balance in any different direction than its already in. Adding built-in HD DVD drives will just be a nice touch...pouring salt on sony's wounds.[Edited on October 22, 2007 at 2:13 PM. Reason : edit.]

Too late to edit, butSeems the free heroes HD-DVD part of the deal is in-store only. http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=70258&t=633844It's in the first scan file, but I don't see an expiration date. Long is this deal good for if anyone knows? Through the 27th? Some of the deals go longer, only reason I ask.[Edited on October 22, 2007 at 3:38 PM. Reason : ]

yeah, really...$169 with no taxes and no shipping for the HD-DVD addon, 5 HD-DVD movies, and season 1 of Heroes on HD-DVD is not a bad deal at all
10/22/2007 4:33:35 PM

10/22/2007 4:39:26 PM
it would be quite a deal if it was blu ray. We all know HD DVD lost this battle because Spider man is blu ray only...
10/22/2007 7:37:57 PM
10/22/2007 7:58:06 PM
^^Not sure who you're directing that to, but as far as "the battle" goes, Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD 2:1 still. If anyone is currently "winning" then that would be blueray-not that it matters. That being said, the "battle" will probably conclude similar to how the "+R/-R" battle concluded. Not sure why you're so hyper-sensitive about HD-DVD though. It's kind of gay.^In all fairness, the cost I will have paid for an HD-DVD player is roughly similar to what I would have paid for a PS3 anyways. Cost of entry, even with deals, is still within 80 bucks of each other give or take. Arguing clear superiority of either choice is somewhat of an empty position. The only things either side has going for it in any practical sense comes from a very small number of exclusive titles. While the HD-DVD exclusives are generally better than the Bluray ones, they're not so great as to have any real bearing on my decision. Transformers was good and all, but I don't need to see it any more times.[Edited on October 22, 2007 at 8:08 PM. Reason : ]

This is true. However if i were you i would buy the 200$ hd-dvd standalone player over the xbox drive.and if you dont want to take my advice ill give you my xbox drive and 40$ for it (because you need 1080p and i couldnt give two shits)
10/22/2007 11:44:38 PM
ok make that 60$
10/23/2007 8:14:31 AM
but HD DVD has the word DVD in it...clearly its the winner here.
10/23/2007 9:35:04 AM
By that logic, what can we say about Lance Armstrong?
10/23/2007 10:49:19 AM
10/23/2007 12:28:26 PM
heh, michael bay is still pissed about being forced to go the HD DVD route
10/23/2007 1:05:47 PM
Yeah, those new statements pretty much prove his original blog post berating Paramount for going HD DVD represented his true feelings on the subject, and he was pressured into backpedaling afterwards. Everyone already knew this though.
10/23/2007 1:28:52 PM
This is very true. There's no reason for a format war. This would not happen in soviet russia.
