Duke, your daughter's still a woman. she's genetically incapable of retaining driving skills you teach her.

To be sure it will be an uphill battle.

She does have my genes, though, and with enough instruction and enough practice, I think that it may, in fact, be possible to teach her to be at least a reasonably proficient driver.

it's paid for itself many times over

but it doesn't make you invincible. that, and i don't have it on my bike, whidbey island cops used instant-on and were absurdly aggressive with it (like just pinging it on when coming over hilltops, blindly hoping to catch a speeder). Only one or two of the tickets have been with V1.

Just got pulled over...again.

On a motorcycle, I mentally divide the lane in thirds and then ride in the middle of the inner or outer third for the most part (as do most motorcyclists). I was riding off-center in the lane (normal and preferred on a motorcycle), and apparently I weaved a little or something. Got pulled over, had to wait for the deputy's sergeant to show up, and then they breathalyzed me. I blew a 0.0, of course, and was on my way.

just got pulled over...again.

Got pulled on base last night for not wearing reflective gear at night on base. They recently changed the rules, and I'm fairly sure that it's no longer required, and that the MP was mistaken. They even acknowledged that they weren't really clear on the rules. Obviously, nothing came of it.

dammit, again

got a ticket this time. 60 in a 45. Time to call James Crouch again. Hopefully Johnston County still throws stuff out for "improper equipment" (I know the speedometer in my truck is waaay off). I know Wake quit doing that.

It's gotten to the point where I really don't even care what it costs anymore. I'm gonna drive how I want and pay what it costs--it's more of a principle issue of preferring to spend my money with a traffic lawyer than to those greedy shitheads in the government and insurance companies...and if the gov't gets any money out of me, I want to waste as much of their time and resources as I can (which is what a traffic lawyer does...he's just a professional pain in the ass).

bobby has a good point. if the gubment was truly concerned for our safety, they could make it where your car will only go the speed limit of whatever road you're on. hell, we have the technology to create a fully integrated traffic system where all you have to do is get in your car, tell it where you wanna go, and sit back and let it drive. this would be much more efficient than our current traffic situation as well.

but, instead, local gubments will keep milking this cash cow.

obviously, there comes a point at which speed becomes excessive and dangerous. The speed limit has little or nothing to do with that point, though. Going 60 in a 45 was not even remotely dangerous.

haha, tickets are such a racket (not news...just reiterating). I called a few Johnston County traffic lawyers. Every conversation (with their respective secretaries) went something like this:

Me: Good morning, I got a ticket in Johnston County last week for 60 in a 45. How much for Mr. _ to represent me?

Her: Well, first, are you over 25?

Me: Yes, 29.

Her: OK, you won't have to do driving school. Mr. ____ will get it reduced to improper equipment. His fee is _____, which includes court costs and fines.

In the end, I found a lawyer to do it for $231. The speeding ticket would've been $150 if I'd just pleaded guilty and paid it. I don't know why anyone ever bends over and takes a speeding ticket without looking into fighting it. Out of all the tickets I've fought, I've either gotten them reduced to 9-over (doesn't affect your insurance by itself, and the fine is often less) simply by showing up on the court date, or had them dismissed to a non-moving violation (essentially an expensive parking ticket) by hiring a lawyer. I've only once been unable to do that, and that was because there's a really bitch of a judge or DA or something in Montgomery, AL.

Furthermore, the more people take tickets to court and fight them, the more the DA has to play ball. The whole point of reducing things to non-moving violations (like improper equipment, or city code violations, or even seatbelt tickets--regardless of whether or not you were wearing your seatbelt)--is for them to get some money out of you while enticing you to stop causing them problems and logjamming the court system. In short, they make more money by being a volume dealer.

^You do realize your money is going to the lawyer AND the court, right? Your continual speeding just eats up public resources, whose costs far outweigh whatever fines are imposed on you.

Basically, grow up and slow down. Other than being purely stubborn, what the hell is all this getting you? With the retarded amount of money you are spending on lawyers and court costs, you could be going to the track every week and actually having fun.

well this entirely depends on where the 45 is, traffic and weather conditions etc.

i wouldn't speed quite that much near where my parents live b/c of several reasons, lots of deer (seen them get hit by trucks and cars), lots of driveways (old country road semi-suburbanized), and lots of neighborhoods right off of the road. there are parts on it i would go 60+ on when the population thins out (driveways and neighborhood access), good weather and during the day. it is pretty straight and no blind corners or hills, and traffic is usually light.

other roads i won't go more than 5 over on due to insane traffic patterns and other idiots (hillsborough road in durham near I-18/US15-501/NC-147 for instance)

Yeah, I'm fully aware. I'm all for wasting the maximum amount of public resources that I can in terms of traffic enforcement.

It's worth it to me to drive how I want to.

I'm really not blowing that much money on lawyers and court costs, and the money isn't holding me back from doing track days. It was a matter of finding a car. Now that I have a proper vehicle again, it's a matter of finding time. My daughter is priority #1, followed by work, followed by warm-weather stuff like the beach and jet skiing (I can do DEs in the fall and winter).

Well, I almost made it through August without getting pulled.

I met a deputy head-on in a curve on a backroad near my house. I wasn't doing anything crazy...probably 60, maybe low 60s. Posted limit was 45. He never turned his RADAR on, and I kept going into town.

Well, I get almost to where I was going, driving along in the right lane, when I realize that the lane ends (or rather, is a turning lane for an upcoming intersection). I accelerate a little (as there was a car beside me) and change lanes. I changed lanes expeditiously, but not violently or anything, and I didn't cut the other car off dangerously or anything like that. I'm 99% sure that I never, in this entire sequence of events, EVER exceeded 10 mph over the posted 50 mph limit (and probably more like 0-5 over). I guess you could say that I was driving "with a purpose", but nothing even remotely dangerous.

Well, another 1/4 to 1/2 mile later, I turned right into the parking lot where I was going, just as a cop comes flying up behind me with the blue lights on. He doesn't give me a ticket (I don't think he really had much he could've given me a ticket for, anyway...not one that wouldn't have been thrown out of court, at least), and he really doesn't try to act like a dick or anything, but he gives me this lecture about passing people on the right (don't even get me started) and passing in a turning lane (I didn't enter a turning lane to pass...I was in a lane that was about to end as I was passing another car, so I moved over).

Well, OK...whatever. Not the first, second, or 50th time this scenario has played out. I'm mostly concerned with getting to the gym before they close, so I left without arguing, as to minimize the amount of my time being wasted...

I go into the gym and start working out, and a dude comes up and asks me what I got pulled for (he arrived about the same time I did), and said he saw the cop coming after me, weaving through traffic, without using turn signals, and changing lanes while going through intersections.--and driving significantly faster than me. Oh, and in a gigantic goddamn Dodge Charger. Fucking standard cop fare. 100x worse than the epic transgressions of driving legality and decency they are so heroically and effectively stamping out by doing things like that. The guy couldn't believe it when I told him what sort of mickey-mouse bullshit it was all about.
