4And people who ordered from the bookstore will get an email notification as soon is the shipment comes in. In fact, the manager will likely email people before the sales people on the floor even know the software in. Don't be one of the 50 people a day to call and ask if it's in, especially if you've ordered it from the website.

I really don't understand why you wouldn't just download a copy instead of waiting. You've already paid for a license, at this point you're just waiting for physical media.]

I thought that all new Mac OS's came with the latest version of iLife? Or do I have to install it off of my iLife disc?
10/29/2007 11:33:55 AM
the latest version comes with your mac. they don't give you an update when you upgrade the OS
10/29/2007 11:37:37 AM
damnit....I brought my laptop to work so I could do a clean install on it while working and figured I didn't need to bring the iLife discs because it was on the new OS disc oh well...i'll install it when I get home.
10/29/2007 11:49:39 AM
It could just be me being accustomed to Tiger for so long, but I'm not really feeling the interface changes. And Stacks = I'm debating whether or not to downgrade back to 10.4 until someone comes up with some hacks to put things back the way they used to be...
10/29/2007 3:31:27 PM
^wow really? I'm loving stacks and all the new UI changes. Makes things quicker to get to what you need.

I'll post here if they manage to get the Leopard copies up from shipping and receiving at the bookstore tomorrow. Won't be before noon.

Is there a way to make menus less transparent?
10/29/2007 6:22:02 PM
http://www.peterkrantz.com/2007/leopard-menu-transparency-fixTwo methods mentioned:Alter the background using a white or black stripe.Install a 3rd party hack.One not mentioned: Hope for a patch.[Edited on October 29, 2007 at 6:30 PM. Reason : ]

anyone else notice when you view shared computers that all the Windows machines on your network show up with icons looking like old ass CRT monitors with the blue screen of death on it? thought that was pretty funny haha
10/29/2007 9:29:07 PM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHYou macfags are so petty.
10/29/2007 10:10:22 PM
someone hates macs lol
10/29/2007 10:18:55 PM
Quite the opposite. But I just don't get the joke. I haven't had a blue screen of death on any of my windows machines in at least 6 or 7 years. Like I said, it's petty.
10/29/2007 10:23:22 PM
its funny. you are petty. Not to mention that Vista blue screened on me every hour or so when I was playing games. Anyone I used to play WoW with can vouch for that.[Edited on October 29, 2007 at 10:29 PM. Reason : .]

Looks like all outbound network accesses are now routed through kernel_task -- which means application-by-application network permissions (a la LittleSnitch) are now pretty much impossible [Edited on October 29, 2007 at 11:20 PM. Reason : at least until the app is massively revamped]
10/29/2007 11:16:17 PM
^ Shit, thats not good for me
10/29/2007 11:39:52 PM
Supposedly, Leopard has built-in support for per-application firewalling. I vaguely remember reading about this. I bet some app to replicate LittleSNithc's functionality will come along soon enough
10/29/2007 11:39:54 PM
Fwiw, while I've not been entirely happy with Vista's performance with gaming, but I haven't had enough blue screens to warrant a complaint about blue screens ... and I notice these things.Ok, and I have to state a disclaimer ... I'm still not happy with Vista, I've been warning people off of Vista until I can get a look at SP1 Final. I just have to run it so I can be knowledgeable about the OS like I am with XP and all the previous ones before it.(says the guy who currently runs an XP box, a Vista box, and an Ubuntu box)

I'm super excited about Leopard, but this is kinda disappointing:Dock in Tiger:Same Dock in Leopard:

^I can't wait to get Leopard, but I HATE the folder icons. custom icons in the first day FTW1. Copy image2. Get Info3. Click icon4. Paste5...PROFIT[Edited on October 30, 2007 at 1:07 AM. Reason : ]
10/30/2007 1:06:32 AM
i don't know if you can do that, at least for the Dock folders/Stacks. It looks like Stacks folder images default to showing the icon of the first item in that stack, so it's dynamic. Hopefully, though, you can set a permanent icon. here's a pretty comprehensive review of Leopard from the ground up, and where those Dock pictures came fromhttp://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.arsThere's a ton of Developer tools and stuff behind the scenes that most users will never directly see
10/30/2007 6:33:08 AM
The bookstore's selling it finally. 69 bucks for Leopard. iLife 08 is 39 if you want to get both at once.
10/30/2007 11:06:03 AM
havent gotten my email yet
10/30/2007 11:24:46 AM
That just means if you go to pick it up now you'll have to wait about 5 minutes while they process your order.

Just ordered my iMac today. Crabtree and Southpoint were all out of the one I wanted. Is the disk included a full install disk or is it just an update? For example - could I format and start fresh instead of an update?
10/30/2007 12:51:11 PM
Just went and picked up my copy of Leopard. They had em sitting behind the counter, took 30 seconds
10/30/2007 12:54:07 PM
wish i could get it today... just dont have the $$$
10/30/2007 12:54:45 PM
10/30/2007 12:57:28 PM
^yepDepends on when the computer shipped -- typically right after an OS release, you get the computer pre-installed with the previous system and a "drop-in" disk that is just the OS update. So if you wanted to start fresh, you'd boot from the "drop-in" and install the OS, then use the Software Restore CD (which would install 10.4 and all the optional+iLife apps) and use the installer that just does the optional programs.---

^^haha no doubt, I actually worked for Apple for 1.5 years (actually got hired about 2 days after OS 8.5.1 was released... ) -- was checking Technician's classifieds to see if anyone was selling their PC when I saw the ad that Apple was hiring. I've been a convert ever since

10/30/2007 9:41:48 PM
just setup my Time Machine (there's a sentence i thought i'd never say lol)How did you guys set it up? I just excluded all files except for my user folder (mainly documents, downloads, music, movies, pictures)
10/30/2007 10:02:05 PM
if you have a big enough HDD, why wouldn't you back up everything. Then you can rebuild the entire machine at once if something happens to your main drive. ..... my f'ing copy hasn't shown up from Amazon yet, though, so i haven't done anything with it. -------here's a simple workaround for the Stacks icon problem.http://theappleblog.com/2007/10/30/stacks-icons/and here's some ways to change the Dock back to more traditional lookshttp://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/10/30/fear-change-revert-to-the-traditional-dock-complete-with-black-triangles

I have big enough external drives but they were both close to capacity. I've spent the last two evenings going through and deleting stuff I don't need anymore and trying to consolidate as much as possible onto one drive so i can use the other for time machine. I'm looking into buying either a 1 TB or 2 TB Western Digital My Book Pro II from newegg. Probably get them in a few weeks. Once I do, you can bet your life that i'll have the entire machine backed up on time machine
10/30/2007 10:50:16 PM
was it common knowledge that iphoto, imovie, etc from 10.3 wouldn't work on leopard and i was just in the dark, or am i missing something here? (have all 10.3 install discs, cant seem to make it work)
10/30/2007 11:32:03 PM
I had to update iLife 08 from a 10.4 disc before it worked on 10.5
10/30/2007 11:42:09 PM
so anyone got this setup on their PC w/ the patched DVD?
10/31/2007 12:11:29 AM
