What's the general opinion on how Beckham will do in MLS?
7/19/2007 8:25:29 PM
The game is slower, if he gets the space he needs he'll do fine, but he's not a scorer so unless you're watching every game you're not going to see the tangible results of his prospective domination.
7/19/2007 8:54:48 PM
i dont know if the mls is that much slower than la liga, it is much slower than the epl however
7/19/2007 9:27:21 PM
There are some speedy wingers in La Liga, that's why he ended up playing more in the center/center-right than split wide.
7/19/2007 9:51:30 PM
I'm just trying to get this threat back to the topic.

So for the all-star game they brought in some Scottish club? Can someone give an example of what level of play this Celtic FC would be (like if a foreign baseball team played a US pro team)?
7/19/2007 10:47:02 PM
Celtic have been champions of Scotland 41 times and as such are consistently featured in the UEFA Champions League. They were the first British team to win the European Cup (1967).They're a big deal. ]

Beckham said at halftime that the chances of him playing are really slim. I believe his quote was "heh, I'll be here for five years y'know, and I think it's in my best interest if I wait until I'm fully recovered." He said that if he's really feeling good he might play near the end which will probably happen after all the anticipation from the fans.
7/20/2007 3:41:42 AM
man what in the hell...espn has been showing commercials of this like crazyi just got a question...is this guy like THE BEST person that plays soccer on earth?i mean espn is making it that way and i figured some brazil dude would probably be the best...and i mean this all literally...like is this guy LITERALLY the BEST soccer player on earth?
7/20/2007 12:40:05 PM
nohe's not even top 10
7/20/2007 12:41:40 PM
then wtf is all this hype....espn is making it like he is the michael jordan of soccer....seems like LA shoulda got the number 1 player if they REALLY wanted to make some noise
7/20/2007 1:00:12 PM
He may not be the best (although he is still very good), but it isn't much of a stretch to say he's the biggest name soccer player in the world.
7/20/2007 1:09:28 PM
^^ the whole point is that the best players want to play in the best clubs, in the best leagues, in the best soccer countries, unfortunately the US isnt any one of those...YET[Edited on July 20, 2007 at 5:05 PM. Reason : .]
7/20/2007 5:04:50 PM
^i like how you put yet...i sure hope we become really good at it and whip the rest of the worlds assdoes this mean he plays on the US team in the world cup?
7/20/2007 7:59:48 PM
Even you're not that dumb.
7/20/2007 8:18:13 PM
no, he's still english, unless he becomes a citizen, the best thing about beckham is that he as many highly talented friends who he can convice to come here too,i wouldn be surprised to see the likes of henry, rooney, messi, etc all comming here in the next 5 years
7/20/2007 8:20:29 PM
^ehh... ronaldo, maybe. the others you mentioned have WAAAAAY too many good years left in the tank to come to the MLS. but still, getting a solid player with an illustrious career who still has a few years at the highest level to come to the MLS is a good sign of growth, considering the MLS started out with players who were finished with their careers in their respective countries/leagues a few extra years before retirement (valderrama, echeverri, jaimie moreno, just to name a few).V that's pretty cool, valderrama was the man. It always kind of made me mad that he and roy lassiter couldn't be the first team to win the MLS founders cup.[Edited on July 20, 2007 at 8:35 PM. Reason : El Pibe]
7/20/2007 8:31:07 PM
^off topic but i was in charlston sc, a month ago for a soccer tournamentand valderama was playing there too
7/20/2007 8:32:47 PM
bttt it starts in an hour or so
7/21/2007 7:07:54 PM
so is he playing or not? now that it's close i'm pretty pumped. like i've said, i'd love for soccer to get big, i enjoy it as ignorant about it as i am.
7/21/2007 8:22:27 PM
I was kind of annoyed by this "Beckham: New Beginnings" shit but as I'm watching it, I find that I'm actually getting into it.My prediction is he'll play the last 15 or 20 minutes.
7/21/2007 8:26:56 PM
I'd say he'll come on around 75' unless it's close and/or heated, in which case he might not come on at all.
7/21/2007 8:39:03 PM
has nobody's ESPNHD been fucking up a lot in the last day or two? there are a lot of pixels on the screen from tiem to time making it look horrible, and the framerate is nowhere close to 30[Edited on July 21, 2007 at 8:51 PM. Reason : i'm not excited about soccer, nothing else is on, and i'll watch anything in HD ]
7/21/2007 8:44:48 PM
^^yeah I thought it would be pretty annoying for an hour but it was actually pretty interesting..as a soccer fan its good to see everyone talking about and getting excited about soccer
7/21/2007 8:44:58 PM
man, this woman sucks.
7/21/2007 8:53:41 PM
this announcer fucking sucks
7/21/2007 8:57:45 PM
god damn it i can't stand it when ESPN does this; when they show a intro for their pregame then replay it again before the gamemake a new one damn it[Edited on July 21, 2007 at 9:03 PM. Reason : that's a lot of media]
7/21/2007 9:01:29 PM
Dave O'Brien still sucks.*sigh*
7/21/2007 9:55:24 PM
I thought Xavier balled the first half... he had that great flick too
7/21/2007 10:07:46 PM
is this the same Xavier that used to play for liverpool? hes gotta be like 35 by now
7/21/2007 10:09:31 PM
this shit if fucking boring. this is why soccer sucks.
7/21/2007 10:09:46 PM
^then dont watch
7/21/2007 10:10:39 PM
Did you see? Beckham stood up. Wow. I hate ESPN.
7/21/2007 10:11:14 PM
they're just talking to their audience, thats probably why the majority of people are watching
7/21/2007 10:11:52 PM
hasn't been that boring at all to mecouple of great chances on both sides, great saves, pretty fast paced in the middle
7/21/2007 10:12:16 PM
chelsea are really owning this game, as would figure...i wouldnt be surprised to see a 4,5-1 final in this game with a fluke galaxy goal in there
7/21/2007 10:14:43 PM
and theres a goal already...didnt think terry would be the first to score though
7/21/2007 10:15:21 PM
holy shit that was world class display right there...too bad that was offsides
7/21/2007 10:21:23 PM
I don't care if he was offsides, that was awesome as hell
7/21/2007 10:21:29 PM
this is a friendly, that should be a goal, how the lineman even catches that being offsides has got me...martino sorta close there with a nice drive
7/21/2007 10:23:04 PM
aaand donovan disappears against good competition once again
7/21/2007 10:25:24 PM
If you're ESPN, and this is your one chance to get Thursday night MLS to be something that gets a greater share of TV audiences than World Cup of Softball, don't you think you'd bring your A+ crew? Examples of mistakes:1) Talking about a replay when the wrong video is showing2) The pre-game host who wasn't Julie Foudy had NO idea what he was saying half of the time3) Lalas' mic doesn't workI mean when Drew Carey cares more about the game than your reporter does, and I know Drew Carey is chronicled as a pretty big fan, then you're covering the game in the wrong way. Any thoughts?
7/21/2007 10:26:02 PM
The sad thing... this is their "A+ crew." ESPN sucks, period.
7/21/2007 10:27:55 PM
Also, the 5th grade level of cheesiness kills me too, but maybe all sports broadcasting has reduced to that now[Edited on July 21, 2007 at 10:35 PM. Reason : ...]
7/21/2007 10:34:55 PM
not only does donovan disappear, but he misses a header even i couldve scored, and i havent played forward in soccer since i was about 12
7/21/2007 10:38:05 PM
this happened earlier in the game, but who else heard them say donovan wasn't ready to give up all the corners/free kicks to becks? yallop better make damn sure this doesn't happen
7/21/2007 10:39:26 PM
haha god, donovan is streaky on free kick situations, beckham is not
7/21/2007 10:40:30 PM
if by streaky, you meant to say sucky, then yes
7/21/2007 10:41:50 PM
