some of the more ridiculous quotes:

Quote :
""I've got two young daughters who I hope will be athletes. And, you know, the notion that somehow they would be degraded and insulted, and that that would pass as humor, and that NBC would be running that over the public airwaves I think is atrocious," he said.
"

-Barack Obama

Quote :
"On Wednesday, a CBS board member, Bruce Gordon, called for Imus to be fired from WFAN.

"His remarks are so significant that I believe that the right outcome is for him to be terminated," said Gordon, former president of the NAACP."

Quote :
"The head coach of the Rutgers women's basketball team, Vivian Stringer, told "The Situation Room" Wednesday that she was "stunned" and "surprised" by MSNBC's move.

"I think that it's probably a victory for the people," said Stringer, who said she was "proud" of corporate executives who "understand that we can do better.""

wow

Quote :
""If CBS follows suit as NBC has done, it gives a chilling message to those that will use the public airwaves in a way that is gender-biased and race-biased," Sharpton told "The Situation Room."

He also said he intends to complain to the Federal Communications Commission about the matter.

"Somewhere we must draw the line in what is tolerable in mainstream media," he said Sunday. "We cannot keep going through offending us and then apologizing and then acting like it never happened. Somewhere we've got to stop this." "

ok Al

Quote :
"Imus "has stolen a moment of pure grace from us," the captain of the Rutgers women's basketball team, Essence Carson, said."

holy shit! AHAHA

Quote :
"Other players echoed Carson's reaction, saying Imus' insulting words and the resulting controversy overshadowed their achievements."

DONT HOLD A FUCKING PRESS CONFERENCE TO KEEP BRINGING IT UP

Quote :
"Stringer and Rutgers players are scheduled to appear Thursday on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

"

jesus christ

Quote :
""I would like to speak to him personally and ... ask him, after you've met me personally, do you still feel in this category that I'm still a 'ho' as a woman and as a black, African-American woman at that?" said Kia Vaughn, a sophomore center."

Other phrases that can no longer be used:

- black sheep of the family
- niggardly (no racial meaning, but people's lack of vocabulary would make this controversial)

Any others? We can't be too careful here

I hope that when the board discussion goes down they divide it into categories:

1) What no one can say on the airwaves

2) What whites can't say on the airwaves but blacks can.

3) What blacks can't say on the airwaves but whites can.

That way we can all be clear on the subject.

It's been said, but it needs to be said again.

The double standard here is absurd. Rappers can bash females and tell stories of treating them like sexual toys and blast it on mainstream radio all day and it's cool. They even call their fellow black men words that would get a white person blasted. Yet Imus is the problem? Obviously, niggas don't understand "root" cause analysis.

Seriously, I'm suing the Nappy Roots because they are being racist to themselves.

"But again, Imus, as a white man that spewed racial bile, is the softest of soft targets. The same can't be said for the black rap shock jocks. They made Imus possible. They gave him the rappers bad housekeeping seal of approval to bash and trash black women. In many ways, their artistic degradation has had even more damaging consequences for young black women.

Homicide now ranks as one of the leading causes of deaths of young black females. A black woman is far more likely to be raped than a white woman and slightly more likely to be the victim of domestic violence than a white woman. Their assailants are not white racist cops or Klan nightriders but other black males. --Earl Ofari Hutchinson"

These are two separate things. First of all, we ain’t no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC [which announced Wednesday it would drop its simulcast of Imus’ radio show] going hard on black girls. You people who don't understand why racial slurs are wrong are the reason people like Sharpton and such gain prominence.

On top of that, CNN had 3 black people on today, and all 3 of them were denouncing rapper's use of the same words, while saying that Imus should be let off the hook because of his sincere apology and the context of his show. So picking on Sharpton and making it seem like he's representative of the issue is a strawman attack on the issue. It also perfectly demonstrates why people spewing his type of vitriol rise to the top. You're all part of the problem.

Quote :
"so exactly how many words can you not say to a black person, or risk being fired from your job through public pressure."

First of all, outside of the shock jock context, you really can't call any black person in your job a nappy-headed ho out of the blue. If you feel that you can, then you're an idiot and a racist. Secondly, there's no mystical tricks to dealing with black people differently than white people in your job, just don't be a dick. That's it. Not being racist follows naturally from that (and vice versa too, but some of you seem like you'd have a hard time with the latter).

Calling a team of black basketball players "nappy headed hos" is a racial slur.

I don't know the context Imus said it in, but it's clearly racist standing on its own. The race of the girls should have nothing to do with the fact they are hos (if you're making a joke about hos, you shouldn't be calling them hos anyway), and nappy-headed is one insulting way of referring to a black person's race. The word "nappy" has a generally negative connotation that's amplified when you use it to demean a black person, especially when set off with the further demeaning context of "ho."

The question I have is, though -- why is it that Chris Rock and half the black entertainment media get to talk shit about white people and their own race, but they aren't fired?

I know -- CNN had a bunch of black people on and they denounced them. Big whoop. They got Don Imus fired in the course of a week. Where's the energy? Where's the passion? Where's the million-man march for decency in public life? I don't see it.

And since when is the issue "racial slurs?" It's not. It's racism. Every time this issue comes up, it's the same line -- "here's proof that racism isn't dead in America."

Isn't that an inherently presumptuous and attributive statement? That because Don Imus made one comment about a basketball team, suddenly we can make inferences about the prevailing attitudes of ALL white Americans? Isn't that a "racial slur?" But plenty of black "spokespeople" get away with it on the air; I certainly heard plenty of it on the nightly news this week.

Personally I'm tired of this claptrap. Don Imus probably isn't racist. He's just dirty. He has a potty mouth. We're all adults -- we can deal with dirty men who have potty mouths.

For example: I'm willing to bet many people here have called someone a "motherfucker." I sure have. But I don't really mean that I believe that person is incestuous, not matrilineally. It's called an ironic statement; the English language allows us to use ironic wit to express ourselves by verbally transposing what isn't onto what is.

Don Imus was tried and convicted in the court of no-sarcasm. We -- intelligent, "motherfucker"-using adults -- are expected to believe that this man, a shock jock, has for this one instant made a statement in pure earnest about a matter of great social importance.

I don't buy it.

Maybe he is racist in his heart of hearts. I don't know. Hell -- maybe Al Sharpton is racist in his deepest, darkest, dare-I-say-it, blackest corners of his heart. I don't know that either.

But what I do know, is that the national media circus is not the place to determine how people really think and feel about race. Not like this. This is not an intelligent discussion. This is a witch hunt. And if we applied the same standards a large number of popular black entertainers, they would all be off the air in a week.

As I said before, it's intent. Chris Rock is not intending to insult or demean anyone, he's trying to make a positive point, or a joke. From the blurb they have Imus saying, it really, really seems like he's trying to insult them on the basis of their race and sex. There are other reasons too, that you won't like, but those are the most palatable.

Quote :

Racism in American ISN'T dead. Blacks don't need Imus to know this, they experience it almost every day (if not every day). I'm not black, but i'm a member of another minority group, and I have to admit, we don't get it as bad as they do. There are a myriad of reasons for it, but it's true.

Quote :

This is where you're completely wrong, and I don't understand why. No one is making a claim of ALL white Americans. The fact that you perceive things that way is very highly disturbing to me. You and others are accusing Sharpton and his ilk for walking around with a looking-for-racism attitude, when it seems you have a looking-for-looking-for-racism chip on your shoulder.

Quote :

Calling someone "motherfucker" is not irony. It's a pejorative and is used as such. However, you're right that we say things in different situations with different meanings, but this is what I mean by "intent."

Quote :
"Don Imus was tried and convicted in the court of no-sarcasm. We -- intelligent, "motherfucker"-using adults -- are expected to believe that this man, a shock jock, has for this one instant made a statement in pure earnest about a matter of great social importance.

This isn't Imus' first instance of making racial jokes. I don't know enough about Imus either way, but I wouldn't think he's racist from this one comment (I would though for that politician that said Obama was the first clean black man, which is blatantly racist, no matter how you cut it).

Quote :
"Maybe he is racist in his heart of hearts. I don't know. Hell -- maybe Al Sharpton is racist in his deepest, darkest, dare-I-say-it, blackest corners of his heart. I don't know that either."

Al Sharpton gets along with plenty of people white and black. I doubt he's racist, but like anyone else, he's clearly not perfect.

I agree, the media warps the perception of reality so much, that it ends up creating that reality. The more the media plays up racism, to more racism it will incite, I think, which is definitely not good.

I disagree though that black entertainers would be off the air under the same standards, mostly because their intent is different than Imus'.

man, the legacy of slavery really sucks in this country. even when blacks and whites have no reason to be divided, they are, simply because of what they expect from the other group. i think imus' comment was meant to mock the dumb things black people say about each other. he's probably heard it before and decided to use it in passing. he made a mistake and he's paying for it a million-fold.

you know if this was the first time he did anything like this, the uproar would subside, and he'd be back to business.

but he has been doing this same shit, over and over, for a long time.

CBS and MSNBC have both realized its time to take out the trash.

You don't determine what words are offensive and what words aren't. Society does. Society deems both of them offensive. Therefore, you're wrong.
