VCD is still popular in Asia

DVD penetration had nothing to do with the PS2 and everything to do with the man that convinced Hollywood to adopt the format.

I read somewhere that the blu ray / hd are using different video compression. Has any extensive comparison of the image reproduction of these two formats been done? Does this at least nullify the blu ray capacity advantage (for movies, not data storage)?
1/19/2007 11:08:06 PM
they started out using different compression. They are both capable of running the same ones. There are no inherent advantages to either format in that regard. But Blu-Ray has more storage space, making it the better choice.
1/19/2007 11:45:35 PM
I thought there would be one standard compression for each format (hd or blu). Are all players going to be built to decode both?Actually, it looks like that could be possible. I just ran across one example of a monolithic solution for decoding both formats, anounced over a year ago. You do realize that the 2:1 margin they are talking about is for a whole TWO weeks and that its for DVDs sold not systems sold. Also they even say that during those two weeks Blue-Ray had two new release and and HD-DVD had none. Don't you think that affected the sale of DVDs for those weeks?
2/1/2007 4:54:02 PM
More interestingly, VideoScan's numbers indicate that during the seven days between Jan 7 and Jan 14, Blu-ray managed to close the gap of total discs sold since inception with HD DVD by over seven percentage points, suggesting that if the current trend continues, the two formats could be at disc sales parity within weeks.

I fail to see how lowering the price of a standalone player to $100 more than what a PS3 already sells for is gonna make a bit of difference. Even if you weren't interested in buying a PS3 for its gaming capabilities, why wouldn't you get one if you were gonna buy a blu-ray player? I guess maybe because of its size?
2/26/2007 4:19:27 PM
Most of us don't have to deal with the WAF, but it's real, and is a very big reason to many many people to pay $100 more for the same functionality.
2/26/2007 4:37:36 PM
I suppose. God help me if I'm ever that whipped.

It's simple why Blue Ray will fail. Cost of licensing. Sony is known for it's archaic pricing models and ridiculous rules associated with it's product. They pick and choose who is allowed to use it's technology. Seriously, you cannot just fill out an application and pay a fee to use sony technology. Ask any engineer who works with sony created hardware. It's retarded. HD-DVD, will win simply because it has less restrictions. Once Sony gets that idea then honestly I can't see any sony product succeeding as a mainstream item. Their cellphones aren't, their video game consoles aren't, their TV's aren't, ... you getting the trend right? Playstation 1 succeeded ONLY because there weren't any other options that were as good! Nintendo was still going with cartridge based stuff. Playstation 2 succeeded only until XBOX came out and blew it the fuck away. You know why XBOX blew it away? Because the game companies didn't have to deal with Sony's absolutely retarded contracts etc. It's much harder to meet Sony's guidelines than Microsofts and this was coming from me working for Red Storm Entertainment and eating lunch with the game dev's all the time. Sony's spec sheet was like 50 pages long where Xbox's was like 20.
2/27/2007 9:50:39 AM
from the article ^^^Meanwhile, Ken Graffeo from HD DVD backing Universal Studios Home Entertainment attributed Blu-ray's win to the larger number of new Blu-ray titles that hit the market in the first six weeks of the year, and pointed to HD DVD's superior attach rate, which he said remains five times greater than Blu-ray's, saying: "Given that the life-to-date title sales ratios are close to 1:1, and given that Blu-ray has a 5:1 ratio right now on the hardware side due to the PS3, why aren’t Blu-ray software sales outpacing HD DVD by a similar ratio?"
