does anyone remember if charlie weis accepted the Dame job before the Pats' season ended that year?i feel like i remember him taking it before the season was over...i know it could be different for and assistant coach than a head, but just wondering
11/29/2006 9:26:27 AM
yes, he did
11/29/2006 9:30:30 AM
Charlie Weis did, but that's two different scenarios (Head coach vs. Assistant). He also didn't announce it until right before the Super Bowl, IIRC. The only thing that makes me think he maybe would come out with it (If it were to happen, which I doubt) would be that Pitts season is practically over already. I still don't think he'd make it public until the season is completely over, but they realistically aren't going to the playoffs
11/29/2006 9:32:50 AM
^^i'd forgotten about that, but he def did accept it b4 the Pats season was up

Interesting commentary on Cowher's status:http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/dailycourier/news/s_481797.htmlSome quotes:
11/29/2006 11:09:56 AM
And state sports (barring the occasional decent season) have been sporadic and generally poor since the 83 championship with no conference champs in bball since 87 (i think) and certainly marginal football success (mostly sheridan)I think we are due for another miracle after 24 years of shit.[Edited on November 29, 2006 at 11:14 AM. The 'realistic' picture is, it's a longshot. However, these guys don't realize that sometimes it isn't about money. If Cowher wants out of the NFL and wants to stay busy, he'll be our coach or a commentator. These guys are basing all of this on the fact that Cowher will take a pay cut. They don't realize we've asked him before and his response was 'the timing isn't right'. Maybe it is now... he's reached the pinnacle in the NFL. They're talking heads and nothing more. As far as recruiting... I don't think Cowher would require much recruiting here. He would watch hundreds of tapes and say "Okay, I want you, you, you, you, and you"It wouldn't be that hard
11/29/2006 11:16:17 AM
"A place like NC State"I don't think it would be as hard to recruit to NCSU now as it was before Amato.Say what you will about Chuck, but he did put us on the map. We aren't a noname program anymore.
11/29/2006 11:16:39 AM
^^^I don't think recruiting is really that big of an issue. I mean it's bill motherfucking cowher, who wouldn't jump at a chance to play for him with facilities in the top 10% of the nation? If Cowher signs w/ us I can guarantee we get every single recruit that Amato had, plus maybe a few surprises. The biggest road block in my mind is simply if Cowher needs a break. I believe it is obvious he wants a break from the NFL, but does he want a break from football altogether?[Edited on November 29, 2006 at 11:19 AM. Reason : ^^ looks like a couple guys beat me to the point]
11/29/2006 11:18:55 AM
Cowher will have no trouble recruiting. Hopefully the guys we are keeping on staff will be able to secure our current commitments and then when Cowher is named, a few on the fence will solidify with the Pack. Cowher having trouble recruiting is a joke.
11/29/2006 11:21:22 AM
More importantly, he would need top notch coaches assisting him.
11/29/2006 11:22:22 AM
well the important thing is, he hasn't said no yet. you have to assume that we have told him its his if he wants it and if he knew the answer was no then he would have already said so. It is atleast something he is thinking about.
11/29/2006 11:22:23 AM
Yeah, I thought you guys would get a kick out of the "place like NC State" comments these guys made. I never said I agreed with what they said. I still think he's a longshot, not because of the money, but because of timing again, that has been stated ad nauseum.

11/29/2006 11:50:42 AM
Yeah, the interim situation, if that's the case, should be handled very quickly and be very very public about who we intend to hire for 2008. If Cowher says yes to coming then, we should be screaming it out. I think that's a big issue to make a commitment like that a year in advance. What if something happens and we end up getting screwed in the end and we're stuck with an interim-to-permanent coach?http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2006/11/29/cowhers-contract-interim-solution/[Edited on November 29, 2006 at 11:51 AM. Reason : oh yeah]
11/29/2006 11:51:04 AM
If that interim coach was Donnan and we got "screwed" into keeping him, I would be ok with that. I like him a lot, and the ONLY downside I can find on him is that he has been out of the game a while.
11/29/2006 11:52:50 AM
Yeah, IF it's Donnan.
11/29/2006 11:53:12 AM
yeah good points, but i mean a little creativity can go a long way...if players knew that cowher was on his way....we'd be makin bank on recruits
11/29/2006 11:53:59 AM
Yeah, that's where the uncertainty comes in. I would be extremely open to this if it were possible to have the right people in place (read: Donnan/Cowher). It would be a smooth transition period, I feel.
11/29/2006 11:55:17 AM
i just had a friend call and tell me that his friend told him that his friend dates cowhers daughterand that its not that far of a long shotbut thats friend of a friend of a guy dating his daughter talk

11/29/2006 12:37:01 PM
no. it was a joke. it was also clutter, which we don't need
11/29/2006 12:38:43 PM
Charlie Weiss coached all the way into the Super Bowl while transfering over to his job with Notre Dame, it didn't seem like much of an issue. Pitt isn't even going to make the playoffs. Granted Weiss was just an OC and not a head coach, if Cowher did want to come and decided to he would have no trouble getting shit on track even with a late start. Also, our team is young so if this recruiting class isn't great,we still have plenty of young talent. We shouldn't lose what we have, can probably pick up a few more, and then he could be rolling next year. But this doesn't matter, because he isn't going to coach here next year. If anything, he takes a few years off, or stays at Pitt, those are my guesses.
