Why did #48 North Meck drop out when they lost to #2 Shelby by only 7 pts? They actually led up to the fourth quarter and then lost on 2 turnovers.

North Meck made a good showing...their rating didn't change much. Some other teams just jumped over them based on nig wins. We are talking about 360+ teams, so it's tough to stay in the top 50.

Yep, it's been a tough year for Coach Fowler and the Comets. The good news is that there are 4 weak teams in that conference, so they still may win a game. Their best shot is Oct. 28 at West Johnston.

One local game overshadows all of the other ones this week...
#44 SE Raleigh (5-2, 2-0) at #49 Garner (6-1, 2-0) -- Having already defeated East Wake last week, SER can pretty much lock up the Greater Neuse conference title if they beat the Trojans
Wakefield (5-2, 0-2) at Leesville Road (5-1, 2-0) -- Wakefield tries to bounce back after back-to-back upset losses, while greatly improved Leesville is looking for the Cap-7 championship
Broughton (4-3, 1-1) at Wake Forest-Rolesville (3-3, 1-0) -- Also in the Cap-7
Athens Drive (6-1, 1-1) at Apex (4-2, 1-0) -- A 2nd loss would knock AD out of the Tri-7 title picture

The top games around the state...
#16 Scotland Co. (5-1) at #18 Fay. Seventy-First (5-1) -- Winner gets Richmond Co. for MSEC title
#13 Crest (5-1) at #34 Charlotte Country Day (5-1)
#28 Asheville (3-2) at #46 Asheville Roberson (5-2) -- A big crosstown rivalry game
#48 NE Guilford (5-1) at #23 Western Alamance (6-1)
#41 West Forsyth (5-1) at #42 Mount Tabor (4-1) -- Tabor knocked off #9 Davie Co. last week
#22 Rocky Mount (5-1) at SW Edgecombe (5-0)
Asheboro (6-0) at #47 SE Guilford (5-1) -- Resurgent Blue Comets look to stay unbeaten

Upset watch...
Polk County (7-0) at Mitchell County (3-3) -- Polk is undefeated, but untested

Blowout watch...
#1 Greenville Rose (6-0) at Havelock (1-5)
Ardrey-Kell (1-4) at #3 Independence -- Indy has won 97 consec., A-K is in it's first year of varsity FB
#10 Burlington Cummings (5-1) at Orange Co. (0-6) -- Cummings can light up the scoreboards
Overhills (0-6) at #21 Harnett Central (6-0) -- HC by 40-50, even if Rodney Cox doesn't play
Reagan (0-5) at #25 Parkland (6-0) -- Reagan will look more like Walter Mondale HS in this one

Also postponed (due to field conditions, not the mess in Apex):

SE Raleigh at Garner

In short, if you're planning to go to a game tonight, call the school first to see if it's still on!

Only one significant game locally was played Friday, the rest were postponed...
Broughton 47, Wake Forest-Rolesville 30 -- now only Sanderson and Leesville are undefeated in the Cap 7

The top games around the state...

#13 Crest 16, #34 Charlotte Country Day 15

Asheboro 7, #47 SE Guilford 0 -- Blue Comets remain undefeated

Upset watch...
Polk County 30, Mitchell County 0 -- Ouch! I blew it on this one, as undefeated Polk wins big.

#10 Burlington Cummings 62, Orange Co. 6
#21 Harnett Central 62, Overhills 20
#25 Parkland 24, Reagan 0 -- Not nearly the margin I expected

Big local games that were postponed...
#44 SE Raleigh (5-2, 2-0) at #49 Garner (6-1, 2-0) -- Monday 7:00
Wakefield (5-2, 0-2) at Leesville Road (5-1, 2-0) -- Monday 7:00
Athens Drive (6-1, 1-1) at Apex (4-2, 1-0) -- Monday 7:00

East Lincoln 7
Cherryville 21

This may be the most shocking result of the season in this region. East was coming off of 2 huge emotional wins over North Lincoln and Linconton. This was the ultimate trap game, which came against a team that had an extra week to prepare due to their bye week. Hopefully, this isn't a sign of things to come.

I'd hate to be at East Lincoln's practice this week. Coach Byus is probably putting those kids through the ringer.

North Meck 19, Vance 0

Vance is the team that came within 1 pt. of beating Independance on a 2-pt. conversion to try and steal the win in the 4th.

Now that North has sorted out most of it's injuries/suspension look for them to start turning some heads

Leesville has yet to be beaten on the field. Used an inelligible player against cary and must forfeit, but that was a win on the field.

Leesville has joined Fuquay-Varina (2005) and Athens Drive (2006) as local schools who have turned around their programs almost overnight. The Pride should win the Cap-7 title and get a couple of home playoff games.

Not much in the way of big games this week in the Raleigh area...
Leesville Road (6-1, 3-0) at Sanderson (3-4, 2-0) -- The only 2 undefeated teams in the Cap-7

But there are some big ones in other areas...
#3 Independence (7-0, 3-0) at East Mecklenburg (5-2, 1-2) -- Indy goes for 100th straight win
#4 E. Randolph (7-0, 2-0) at #47 Asheboro (7-0, 2-0) -- Two very stingy defenses meet
Watauga County (8-0, 3-0) at #6 Asheville A.C. Reynolds (8-0, 3-0) -- Watauga's chance to make a statement
#12 Scotland County (6-1, 3-0) at #7 Richmond County (7-0, 3-0) -- NC's biggest rivalry
Siler City Jordan-Matthews (7-0, 2-0) at #11 Thomasville (8-0, 3-0) -- For the Yadkin Valley Conf. title
#13 Crest (6-1, 2-0) at #46 North Gaston (7-1, 2-1) -- The Big South Conf. is tough this year
Manteo (7-0) at Plymouth (7-1) -- Manteo has allowed just 9 points all year

Possible upsets (at least one of these winless teams will pull off an upset) ...
Tuscola (0-7) at North Buncombe (3-5)
Freedom (0-6) at South Caldwell (5-2)
South Johnston (4-3) at Western Harnett (0-7)

Blowout watch...
#2 Shelby (7-0) at Kings Mountain (1-6)
Lakewood (3-4) at #9 Wallace-Rose Hill (7-0)
#20 Harnett Central (7-0) at Union Pines (3-4) -- Another yawner for HC
#26 Maiden (8-0) at Bunker Hill (1-6)
Midway (2-4) at #33 East Bladen (7-0)
Charlotte Garinger (0-7) at #44 Charlotte Catholic (6-2) -- 2x defending state champ vs. NC's worst 4A team
#48 Elkin (7-0) at South Stokes (1-7)

If a game is played with no one in the stands, does it still count as a win...
Statesville (0-7) at Jesse Carson (0-7)
Northern Nash (0-7) at Wilson Fike (1-6)

Eastern Randolph 10
Asheboro 12

I went to this game since I was in town. Asheboro converted several 3-longs and a key 4-17 to score the winning TD. Their kicker missed BOTH extra points and had a FG blocked. The ER offense was crap all night minus their first position to go up 7-6, and didn't convert a key 4th and goal from the 1 and lost a golden opportunity to score. After going up 10-6, ER played Martyball until Asheboro went up in the 4th quarter 12-10. ER made it to the Asheboro 25 with less than a minute to go and let themselves lose 13 yards, then incompleted on 3rd and 4th down to lose when they could have just done safe running plays at 1-10 @ Asheboro 25 to seal the game winning FG.

A very defensive game with a terrible effort from the Wildcats. They usually wait to choke in the playoffs, but Christmas came early for the Cats this year.

How in the hell did Wilmington Hoggard drop to #15 in these rankings? Could possibly end up being 4A East Champs...and they WANT independence...

^ The highest Hoggard has been all year is #12. If they had a tougher schedule, they would be ranked higher. They've only played two top-100 teams; the only school in the top 15 who has played fewer is Thomasville, who has won 29 consecutive games (including two state championships).

With three weeks left in the season, only 7 of the 347 NCHSAA schools have been eliminated from playoff contention. Over half of the winless teams still have at least an outside chance at getting in. Our playoff system is SO watered down.

Two of South Carolina's best are battling on national TV tonight: Byrnes against Gaffney. I'd love to see Charlotte Independence (with their 100 consecutive wins) play either of them.

Big games this week locally...
#39 East Wake (6-1, 2-1) at #29 Garner (8-1, 4-0) -- Probably the two best teams in the Triangle
Fuquay-Varina (6-2, 3-0) at Cary (5-4, 2-2) -- Should be closer than the records would indicate
N. Durham (5-3, 2-2) at Durham Hillside (6-2, 3-1) -- Hillside needs a win to stay in the Pac-8 title chase

Elsewhere in NC...
#37 Pisgah (7-0, 2-0) at #20 Brevard (7-1, 2-0) -- THE game in WNC this week, it should be great
#4 Richmond Co. (8-0, 4-0) at #28 Fay. 71st (6-2, 3-1) -- Richmond's last big hurdle for the MSEC title
#40 Providence (5-3, 3-1) at #18 Butler (7-1, 4-0) -- These 2 play with Independence in a brutally tough league
Hunter Huss (6-2, 2-1) at #11 Crest (7-1, 3-0)
#46 East Gaston (7-1) at North Gaston (7-2)

Upset watch...
Alexander Central (6-2) at Morganton Freedom (1-6) -- Freedom could still make the playoffs
Terry Sanford (7-2) at Purnell Swett (5-3)
Wilson Hunt (4-4) at C.B. Aycock (7-1)

Blowout watch...
Conley (3-5) at #1 Greenville Rose (8-0) -- Rose is on this list nearly every week
#5 Greensboro Grimsley (8-0) at Greensboro Smith (1-7)
Atkins (1-7) at #21 Reidsville (7-1)
Alleghany (1-7) at #45 Elkin (8-0)
North Moore (0-8) at Siler City Jordan-Matthews (7-1)
Dixon (1-7) at East Carteret (7-1)

Somebody's got to win...
Fayetteville Westover (0-8) at Southern Pines Pinecrest (0-8) -- Westover has lost 10 in a row, Pinecrest 18 straight
