what's the deal with the pope in this game?Is there any advantage to having him on your side?the pope keeps on telling me not to attack other christian nations but they are always attacking me. Having the pope on your side is HUGEyou can call crusades on neighboring factions that dont have good standing with the pope.

If you have good standing with the pope, and another catholic faction attacks you, they will be excommunicated.Then you can crusade on their cities.Just send an emissary down to Rome and slip the pope a few thou every couple turns, and you will have fantastic relations in no time.

Or do what I did with the French, stacking half of the College of Cardinals with Frenchmen and then voting in the new French Pope despite opposition from anyone else.I'm still trying to figure out some of the stupid stuff the Danes do. For example, we were neutral when they suddenly sent a small army of five units (two scout cav plus a few vikings) to lay siege to my capital. Even without reinforcements, I knocked the crap out of them with just three units of mailed knights. Then, when I marched my army up there next turn, they ceded two of their cities in a peace deal to me.I'm having too much fun with assassins. The Holy Roman Empire lost at least a half dozen diplomats, three priests, a princess, a merchant, and a member of their royal family to my assassin. Still haven't bothered with the English yet because of the Milanese.

lol that is pretty good, the freakin danes broke a marriage alliance with me.... to no benefit to themselves, they promptly lost a city and will again shortly...due to logistic issues i had to give up florence (gave away after stripping it) but kept bologna, I just couldn't sustain 2 cities there without being able to get reinforcements there....stupid freakin mongols.... i finished my crusade then they pop up with at least 12 full stacks all around me...... maybe ill do it slightly differently, take jerusalem, then give it to the hungarians and let them deal with the freakin horde, whilst i escape with my now über crusader general (full stars) to pwn the spainish for a bit. when that sector is done / cooled off refocus on france, the danes, HRE, and of course, the milanese.....

Kinda a touch of luck involved, but I made sure to create a priest and put one in each city I own, coverting the populace. Also immediately built at least the first two levels of churches in each city. Chased down the occasional heretic as well. I think these sorts of actions help improve the chances that your priests will increase their piety and thus get upgraded to cardinal status as the old ones keel over.

I had two priests down in north africa converting muslim to christian, and one of them ended up turning into a cardinal. Just now though, the other priest died. I dont know if that was because of old age or assasinated.

cathedrals and huge cathedrals help you recruit very good priests aka bishops, one or 2 heretics later and you have a cardinal, my man just became pope and i plan on using it to my full advantage

No, wasn't that a RTW bug that was fixed?This problem is with passive AI on the battle map. Either the AI army will never move from it's original position, even when it is attacking...or it'll move to engage but when you fire on it with ranged weapons it will stop and stay there forever.It only happens rarely,usually on sieges, but it's still there and can ruin battles.

nothing like seeing a flaming bombard cannon round smash through a big column of enemy troops... ~15 casualties per hit.... demoralized them something fierce! English standoff tactics work pretty well, retinue longbow men and Sherwood archers pwn, even pwn most heavy infantry as well... sharpened stakes prevent them from being run down head on by calvary

for sherwood archers, you need to be England, have the full archery tree constructed, and at least a Master Woodsmen Guild. (first one doesn't give the archers)

So I was looking over the cities I could call a crusade on, and I noticed that the mongols have settled down. But it doesnt seem like their armies diminished like they would have in RTW Barbarian invasion. They would have to go through 3/4 cities in a straight line to get to my territory so they arnt a threat as of yet. And I figure I would want to give them a good gut shot before I ran into them at full strenght, So I figured, what the hell, and called a crusade on them.Only thing is.....I dont want to go over there......they are scarey....and I cant count on the other crusading armies for backup all the time....So, how long do I have to join the crusade until I lose favor?

Yeah, don't go over there for a while, the Mongols will take over huge areas, they don't lose their armies when they settle down.They do seem to get weaker over time (although they will be tough for a while).

I'm also noticing that I haven't gotten any princesses, even when I turn down "potential suitor" options, they don't seem to appear. I've checked the agent list and my capitol, nothing.Not that it matters...as Spain I've taken over the Moors, the Milanese, Sicily, France, and the HRE, and Denmark just conceded to become my vassal state. All of Africa west of Egypt is mine, all of Italy (minus the Papal states is mine), and currently I have 9 out of 13 seats in the College of Cardinals...as soon as this old fuck dies, I'll be Pope, too. Does anyone know any details about the introduction of the New World? I know you're supposed to be able to get over there once you get seafaring ships (which I hadn't yet), but the manual gives no hint about how you're supposed to use them to go shoot Aztecs.

They submitted to me because I had them down to one city (Oslo) that would have been a pain in the ass for me to get an army to, so I offered them 50,000 florins (I have plenty ) and they said, "Great!"Based on previous experience they wouldn't have accepted if they'd had another couple of cities, or if I hadn't thrown money at them.I can't tell what the benefit of having them as a vassal really is. I have no direct control over anything they do...I assume it just means that they won't ever declare war on me again.

Probably a crusading army.If a crusade succeeds all the armies on the way will just drop out of "crusade mode" right in the middle of someone elses territory. If they don't want to attack you they will usually make their way back home, but it will take them forever.

So, I am crusading vs the Mongols to get to 1.But by the time I get near them they have taken a citadel at 2.So I vear off to head for 2 because I want to take a strong fortress to hold off the mongols.But before I get there my full army deserts like crazy and I am left with the english units at 3. I have 1 cannon, ONE!.So I recruit as many archers as I can. And so went, the best seige I have ever had. I had to conserve my cannon fire, I had to work my way around the citadels walls to get to the last 3rd gate. I had to move quickly because the time was going to run out.I must say, that defending a citadel will probably be an art form. I mean, technically you only have to get inside the first wall, and then you can make your way all the way to the center by walking around on the walls.But man, that was a hell of a fight. And I have a hell of a fight in the future to keep the mongols from taking the city.

yeah, i had a crusade to take Jerusalem, i did but then a dozen huge stacks of Mongols pop up so i give it to Hungary which is also on the crusade... and get my now pretty good army the hell out of dodge.... (very few archers) next two turns see the Hungarian crusading army get annihilated and the Mongols set Jerusalem as their capitol, they then took out Egypt, and made vassals out of Turkey and the Moors....they are gonna fix the wall exploit in the next patches apparently... you can hold sections of wall and prevent them from continuing just by holding the next section between the towers, prevents them from passing through the tower to the next section... That's the Mongols biggest weakness, they aren't good at siege battles because their best units are all cavalry, so you stick your elite infantry on the walls (or on siege towers if you are doing the attacking), and they will have trouble fighting them.^^ If you leave a few units there as a garrison, and move the rest of your crusading army along, then the ones you left will drop out of "crusade mode" and become regular troops. If you have your general abandon the crusade, the next turn(in the city you conquered), your units will become regular units again. Wish I knew this before half my army deserted
