Why are you bringing Clinton into this? Clinton's lack of morals won't suddenly make Rush's hypocrisy go away.

Some people take vows before God seriously, but I wasn't even criticizing Rush for that.

For crying out loud, let's make them prove that they've first had sex with a man, and then we'll talk about stocking the morning-after pill at Wal-Mart. But I'm telling -- absolutely insane. Because it puts others at risk of being injured by not being able to stop in time. Putting other people in danger is immoral.

Could you explain the morality of membership charges at places that dont sell enough food? I have always wondered about that.

I didnt know that $5 was the difference between an act being moral and immoral.

you fucktard. A law doesn't have to say WHY something is wrong. Morality's reason for anything being wrong is simple: IT JUST FUCKING IS WRONG. that's why a LAW is equivalent to morality.

can you just admit that YOU are stupid? Where does anything state that morality must say why something is wrong? You just don't want to have to give up your bullshit rallying cry of "DON'T LEGISLATE MORALITY ON ME!!!" when you are more than happy to do that to other people.

Im pretty sure the reason why laws exist in this country is that they were passed by an elected legislative body and were not deemed unconstitutional by the supreme court

I could be totally making that up though

nice strawman. That was NOT my position.

HERE IS MY POSITION:
Morality says what is "right" and what is "wrong"
Laws say what is allowed and what is not allowed.
What is allowed and what is not allowed is analogous to "right" and "wrong"
Laws are equivalent to morality.

Quote :
"so if a law were passed tomorrow making it illegal to smile, anyone who smiled anyways would be doing an immoral act?"

it depends on what you mean by "immoral act." If you mean "an act that is considered wrong by the standards set forth by that society," then yes, it is "immoral." If, however, you mean "something truly reprehensible," then, no, of course not...

how is that a problem?

A law says "you shall not murder someone." To me, that says "this society says that murdering someone is wrong." Clearly our code of laws is a "system," per the secondary definition of morality...

what is the difference? where is the dividing line between laws and morality? You have yet to say this very thing, which is the crux of the issue. All you've said is the typical elitist "oh, you just don't understand..."

this is a counter-example to your claim. Clearly soceity can legislate laws which are immoral. So moral law is not always civil law. Simple as that.

I am no claiming that laws adhere to a common sense of "moral decency." Quit strawmanning me. Rather, I am saying that laws, themselves, create a de facta morality. what is so fucking hard to understand about that?

Everyone understands this, we all just think it is stupid. You are trying to simplify morality down to some simplistic societal understanding of right and wrong.

Heres where I started to type out a response but realized it was probably pointless so then just did a google search to help you out:

Actually, you just want to make yourself feel better about pushing YOUR morality on people, so you just claim that my simple truth is, in fact, stupid. It's OK. The first step to not being a hypocrite is to admit that you are, in fact, a hypocrite.

Dude, your argument sucks. Law is not morality. I'm sure there's some brilliant theory that says otherwise, and we can learn a lot from those theories...but they're just exercises in different ways of thinking about the world--they're not practical, and they're not reality.

then please, dear, tell my why law is not morality. Otherwise, it's clear that you haven't accepted your place in this world as a hypocrite.

Either that, or I am allowed to say that things are the way I say they are because I say they are.

Fine, I'll counter your theory with another theory:

Kohlberg's Stages of Morality

You can read about it here:
http://students.usm.maine.edu/bmcpha61/Kohlberg_stages_of_morality.htm

See, doofus, you're at stage four, maybe stage five. You'll probably never get to stage six. Few people do.

Suck on it.

The point was that I needed to make a law to make Rush's premarital sex immoral. Kohlbergs fifth stage of morality in no way supports that, nor does it say that laws dictate morality.

it does suggest the notion of a social contract. Laws are made by societies... don't break the law, and you keep your rights. sounds like a contract to me...

Quote :
"The point was that I needed to make a law to make Rush's premarital sex immoral"

Something can be reflective of a morality without being "immoral." Morality isn't just about "wrong." By your logic, Christianity doesn't have any standards of morality because you would need to add to it in order to make eating biscuits immoral. In fact, and I'm about to blow your mind here, morality actually covers more than just "right" and "wrong." It also covers "not wrong." And no, "not wrong" is not equivalent to "right."
