I thought the plot was pretty clear. Why all the naysayers?

yeah i didn't like this movie at all. waking life is in my top 3 favorites of all time. this would be on my least favorite movies list.

i thought it was worth watching for the filter/graphics alone...the story was kind of fucked up but it was definitely an original movie as far as how it looked

^5 its called Rotoshop, but i don't think its nearly as simple as applying a filter, i think i read somewhere that it takes something like 500 hours to do one minute.

^yes

Quote :
"A Scanner Darkly was filmed digitally using the Panasonic AG-DVX100 and then animated with Rotoshop, a proprietary graphics editing program created by Bob Sabiston. Rotoshop uses an animation technique called interpolated rotoscope, which was previously used in Linklater's film Waking Life. Linklater discussed the ideas and inspiration behind his use of rotoscoping in a UK documentary about him in 2004, linking it to his personal experiences of lucid dreaming. Rotoscoping in traditional cel animation originally involved tracing over film frame-by-frame. This is similar in some respects to the rotoscope style of filmmaker Ralph Bakshi. Rotoshop animation, however, makes use of vector keyframes, and interpolates the in-between frames automatically. Sabiston and his team initially managed this unprecedented animation pipeline, but at the time of his departure, art direction in the studio was still not established and the film's production process was extended well past its initial September 2005 release date target.[2] Each minute of animation required 500 hours of work.[3]"

yeah that is wild

photoshop kind of has a filter like that but obviously its just for single frames and you are very limited with what you can do

The characters were in shifting blob suits half the time. The plot wasn't engaging. Whatever wasn't confusing was lame.

Scanner Darkly is a good movie. If you can't pick up all the subtleties don't hate.

subtleties can't cover up keanu's horrible delivery. This movie isn't even in the same ballpark as waking life

lol, Keanu will never escape the "Woah" quote. I loved how Blizzard incorporated it into their April Fools Day joke.

i read the book over the course of last week and then watched the movie last night. i can definately see why ppl would think the movie is confusing, as compared to the book. you dont get as much of a sense of paranoia like you do in the book (particularly as it revolves around Barris). you also dont get for how bad Arctor's really got it. it evolves a lot slower in the book. i think if they'd thrown in a few more minutes in New Path before he got shipped out to the farm it'd have been a bit better.

animation was lovely though and the book was great.
