You have me as "Supplanter : Neo-Platonism - Greco-Roman Polythiest"but then in the tally you list "Neo-Platonism: 1"While neo-platonism isn't inconsistant with being a greco-roman polythiest, it certainitly isn't the same thing. Its like saying someone is a secular when it comes to government & an Episcopalian… and then listing in the tally 1 secularist. I think Episcopalian would more the more apt description for the tally whereas the other is more of what kind of philosophies you subscribe to. & having a bust of socrates I don't think commits me to being a neo-platonist anyways. Although I suppose someone who based their polytheism on ancient western traditions & someone who based their polytheism off some eastern tradition would be hard to separate for a tally, since polytheist tend to incorporate all other major gods into their system (either by find an equivalent acting god in their system, or by taking in the new god wholesale).[Edited on February 23, 2006 at 7:34 PM. I was raised baptist.I know the most about ancient greco-roman philosophy & mythology. (I've studied augustine & anselm & a few other christians some, but not the bible much specially & no where near as much as I've studied anicent greco-roman phi & rel)I don't really go to church often at all, so in practice I'm essentially agnostic. The most fun classification for the sake of the tally though is going with the greco-roman polythiesm.Heres Delphi that I mentioned earlier... a cultural & the religous center of the greek world (they also considered it a physical center for the world) The delphic games were only 2nd to the Olympic games.Heres a pic thats zoomed in on the play auditorium (its got a few ppl in it so you can tell the size scale of this mountainside playhouse)Heres the Parthenon (in athens - athens & several other cities would have play houses too)Heres a drawing of what the massive statue of Zeus at Olympia would have looked likeI think greek mythology is definitely one of the coolest religions that have existed in western culture.[Edited on February 23, 2006 at 7:49 PM. So you're counting Jedis and Frisbeetarians, but not MY stupid response?
2/23/2006 8:40:28 PM
^through a quick Google search, I confirmed the existence of at least 10,000 individuals whom identify as Jedi, (in England alone.) Through another quick Google search, I found (on the first page of results, no less) 3 individuals whom identify as Frisbeetarian.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Furrykef#Religionhttp://www.viewaskew.com/newboard/messages397/2358.htmlhttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006020607409I'm sorry if I'm being insensitive, but I thought you were joking. I am not joking about my Frisbeetarianism. Nor do I have any evidence to believe that Ronny is joking about being a follower of the Jedi faith.Although I don't support it, there is a US law that requires a minimum of 3 people to incorporate a religion. I feel that is a reasonable standard for this thread. Simply pm me some evidence that there are at least 2 other people whom identify as members of The Church Theoretical Buddhist and Particle Physics, or whatever the name of the religion is (Theoretical Particle Physics Buddhism?) and I'll take your response seriously. (Does that church really exist?)[Edited on February 23, 2006 at 9:03 PM. Reason : no it didn't, it's huge.]

"Supplanter : Episcopalian - Greco-Roman Polytheist"The epsicopalian/secularist example was to show a distinction between life political philosophy ideas & religion. I am by no means an episcopalian and don't know much about that particular version of christianity other than they seem to be one of the more liberal groups of christians."Episcopalian - Greco-Roman Polytheist"That could not exist anyways... a polytheist could accept jesus/yahweh(sp) as a god in addition to their other gods, but an episcopalian & any other kind of monotheist is required not to believe in other gods.
2/24/2006 11:25:23 PM
Well, it's a sin to worship other gods in Christianity. I don't see any problem with believing in them.
2/24/2006 11:28:14 PM
so if i were to believe a particular rock formation is niobe, or that the island delos is alive, or that a river is a god, or that there are tons of gods & demi gods & 12 olympians in addition to jesus... then christians would be okay with that as long as i don't worship the other gods and just recognize their existance? what about other underworld options... if i believe in tartarus & the Elysian Fields rather than or in addition to hell & heaven would that be cool? how much respect could you show other gods with it counting as worship? could you put coins on a dead persons eyes or on their tounge just incase they need to pay a boatman at the river styx?Christian Gods (an ancient greek would see it as gods since there is god, jesus, holy spirit, a hierarchy of differently powered angels, and some heroic powerful men, the devil, other fallen angels, & demons of different powers) could be incorporated into greco-roman polythiesm in a meaningful way I think. But if you start calling Hephastus or Baal Gods (but not worshiping them) instead of demons, I just don’t think many christians would be cool with that.
2/24/2006 11:58:17 PM
I'm not saying Christians would be cool with it.I'm saying I think you'd have a hard time finding a consistent scriptural basis for opposing it.Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm really, really wrong. Who knows?
2/25/2006 12:01:27 AM
The texts that christians compile to consider as scripture have so many vast, broad, and varying themes, that I’m sure with some extrapolation that you could find reasons for supporting it & opposing it.Since the bible can be used on both sides of about every argument, I just went with how the majority of christians would react.

I thought I was agnostic, but I have nightmares about my end. I really think that my body is really the only constant, that when I'm gone, the energy/mass of my body will continue, redistributed, but the interactions of the specific pieces that make up the system that carries my name will cease, and that it isn't tied to some other coordinate system that exists in dimensions other than my worldly ones. So I guess that makes me an atheist, right? does being an atheist only mean you don't believe there's an afterlife/ creator you get to meet or does it strictly mean you think there isn't a personality to the creative force that sent the mass in our universe flying? All I know is that religion is one way we keep ourselves from killing one another and anyone who is a better person for faith ought to keep lying to themselves.

Greek mythology has centaurs, minotaurs, & chimeras oh my.Gods slaying dragonsMedussa & the other gorgons, olympic games, mount olypmus with the 12 olympians, the fates, prophecies... and real cities that correspond to the legends.Mycenae (Agamemnon’s home city), Knossos (Where king mino's had the labyrinth & minotaur), Troy (Trojan war, Achilles & lots of other fun characters) and other ancient cities have been excavated.Even the ancient philosophers get into mythology some like Plato & his symposiumIt has the amazons, & the city of Atlantis.& of course Its really fun to study this stuff and bring together all the random myths & different haloween costumes you have seen growing up, and realize how this religion worked & how all these different characters interacted. It seems like with any singular myth you try to study, you end up encountering characters from all the other stories. [Edited on February 25, 2006 at 12:05 PM. Reason : .]
