That's really cool. You mean they'd be indoors dogs but you'd have a fenced yard for them to play in all the time? Crates are just there for housetraining and damage control during absences. Some dogs feel secure in them and will want to sleep in them as well.
6/24/2006 10:40:25 PM
yeah I know that. Basically I'm going to have some indoor/outdoor dogs. While I'm gone during the day, I'll let them play outside. When I come home, they can come inside. The reason I'm getting two is b/c I'm gone from 7:30 til 6 or 7 everyday. Puppies are automatically cut off and caging a single adult dog for that amount of time seems irresponsible. I don't want to pay for one of those dog sitters that come by once a day so getting two and allowing them to play in the backyard seems like the best option.Tell me if my theory is flawed in someway. I know about the barking dogs and neighbors issues
6/24/2006 10:44:09 PM
aww i'm dissapointed.. I had my gear ready to go . Good thing they got the dog away from that guy! Good luck with everything and let me know if I can help out with anything.
6/24/2006 11:13:33 PM
Just make sure they can't get out of the fence and run away ^haha. Well, if you know of anyone that would offer heartworm treatment for pretty low price or even donate it, that would be great. The rescue I'm with is out of money for that sort of thing, only have $ for basics for new rescues. The vet in Wilson I'm having him neutered at will do at-cost, which the woman I'm talking with is guessing to be around $120+, which I don't have at the moment, so I'm stuck with the option of heartworm prevention that will hold him over for a while until I can get the money up for it. Fortunately I think I may have a career starting in a couple weeks, so that can pay for it 1-2 months down the road. With the uncertainty though I don't want to plan on it, so whatever I can do in the immediate future would be preferrable. Thanks in advance if anyone knows any resources I could use!
6/24/2006 11:20:02 PM
^4 foot privacy fence should do the trick. If that can't keep them in, I need to downsize the dog I want
6/24/2006 11:22:22 PM
It's good to hear people planning to help rescues. Labs and lab mixes I think are the most common type of dog left behind, although hounds/mixes may be the most difficult to find homes for.

Change of plans! I'm picking up the abandoned doggy in just about an hour. So watch for my advertisements He's getting neutered Thursday, and will pretty much be available from that point on for adoption. However, he is heartworm positive so I gotta figure out a way to get the money to treat that
6/26/2006 3:01:35 PM
how much are heartworm treatments?
6/26/2006 3:16:23 PM
Ugh too much...I'm getting a discount from the vet and it's still going to cost almost $200. I just found that out today. Problem is though that estimate came before I actually got him, when I guesstimated he's only around 40-45 lbs. So that treatment dosage & price is for dogs up to 44lbs. Well, he's actually 47.7lbs, so I don't know how much more it'll cost. I'll probably be asking family and friends, and maybe craigslist, for donations, to be sent to the vet, when the time comes. The rescue I'm with doesn't have the funds to take care of it, so they can't take him under their wing. Treatment probably won't be for another two weeks since he's getting neutered Thursday and needs time to fully recover before going through the treatment, which I read up on and is really intense. The process takes a month, but I'm still putting him up for adoption so that there can be someone waiting to take him home (hopefully) at the end of it.Oh and get this - I stopped by my vet, and someone had resigned to having a puppy put down merely because they couldn't afford parvo treatment (which is really pricey, this one around $700). Well, if you had gotten your pup vaccinated immediately upon getting her, that wouldn't have been an issue! Stupid people irritate me. Fortunately the vet refuses to put down a treatable dog so they're going to help her and possibly place her with a rescue for adoption.
6/26/2006 9:23:43 PM
Which vet?It was only going to be $150 for heartworm treatment for my dog - sticker price.
6/26/2006 9:26:15 PM
Nice, where did you get that done?Pet Sound Animal Hospital in Cary. It sounded like a pretty thorough treatment. The lady from whom I took in this new foster said her vet would do a combo of a dose of heartworm treatment + heartworm prevention to lower price for people that couldn't afford the whole treatment. But that can be dangerous for the dog if the heartworms are bad, to where the dead heartworms/eggs/larvae could clog up and cause heart problems. I don't want to risk that so I would definitely find out the process wherever I do get it done, since apparently the dog's heartworms are pretty bad. I think it's cheaper if I took him to a place in Wilson, but there's no way I could take him an hr from here each of two days in a row, and a third trip a month later.
6/26/2006 9:31:50 PM
Ansede Animal Hospital, at Wilmington St and TryonI understand there are two ways to treat heartworm:1) kill the young heartworms and add prevention. Eventually, the mature ones will die off, and you have a heartworm free dog. One day visit.2) 3 step process - step 1 is determining the severity, and then the treatment is a two step process. I didn't pay much attn to that because it was gonna be $600ish. Three day visits.Initially, I was going to go route 1, for economy's sake, and I didn't feel too bad because the receptionist said she'd go that route for her "baby", too, and that so would most of the other staff.i've since decided I'm not going to treat Bubs for heartworm - he's old, he's had a DAMN good life, it's still good, and he is a VERY hearty dog (errr...pun). If it costs him a few months on his life...well, I'll be the one mourning, not him.And I know lots of people will disagree with my decision, and I don't care. To those of you who do: you make your decisions, and they are yours. Keep your comments to yourself about mine.[Edited on June 26, 2006 at 9:47 PM. Reason : ;lk]

I understand - my brother's dog was 12 when she got cancer in her lymph nodes. My family couldn't afford anything like chemo or whatever is available, and the cancer was pretty spread out anyway by the time they discovered the lumps. So they gave her pain relievers while she still showed interest in life. When she started fading they had her put down so she wouldn't have to deal with the pain.Well I'll have to look into those alternative methods, and figure out what's best. I have two weeks (suggested recovery time after neutering in his state before heartworm treatment) to research and decide. Here he is, a really sweet doggy
6/26/2006 11:11:59 PM
The vet made an off comment about Colby actually being pretty darn old, so I'm hoping to find out next week after I make an apptment to just get him checked out in general. If true, that means he'd be impossible to adopt out I wonder if I was told around 4 yrs of age as a cover up, but I have to admit I wouldn't have been surprised if he was only around 5-6 even. Since he's got white to him, that probably covers up any white hairs from age. But we'll see. He was neutered today, and I guess that had something to do with it (I guess how low the testicles hang?).Anyway it's a little sad that he may not have a home except with me, when I can't even give him all the petting and attention he really wants. He is in such a high need of attention, and he cowers so much with sudden loud noise or when scolded that I really wonder about his past. Poor pup.
6/29/2006 10:54:37 PM
Franklin County has some new animals.sadly they had to put down quite a few today CURRENTLYthey have: a goat. a blind basenji a beautiful lab mix (who has a microchip but old info so they cant find the owner... )a cute collie/retriever puppy. looks around 4-5 months old. real cute!a (purebred) bluetick femaleand a pekingese - which will be adopted tomorow. they had like 20 calls regarding this dog.
6/30/2006 1:51:45 AM
do you know if they are going to euthanize the goat? I can probably find a place for the goat. I bet that blue tick hound is someone's dog. My parents live in franklinton and there are always hunting dogs running loose. One night we were leaving their house and going the back way down all of these country roads. 2 hound dogs were running in and out of the street. We stopped and another car stopped and we caught one of the dogs. It had a tag, so we called the owners and they came and got both of the dogs. The guy grabbed the dog by it's collar and threw him in the back of the truck. then grabbed the other and did the same thing. The guy left without saying thank you, eat crap, anything. Before the owner showed up, I thought the dogs were lucky not to get hit, once the owner showed up and all tails were tucked and scared to death, I wasn't so sure. The lab mix looks like there might be some dane in there somewhere.
6/30/2006 9:36:17 AM
Dang I wish you had known that beforehand and were able to take the dogs and find them good homes
6/30/2006 9:55:47 AM

damn. link is messed up. Check out cnn home page about the dog choosing death over humansFor all you dog lovers[Edited on July 3, 2006 at 10:54 PM. Reason : blah]
7/3/2006 10:54:05 PM
It looks like there are 2 cattle dogs in that one cage. I contacted Heeler Haven about them. I REALLY want to pull them but I can't afford any vet care. Maybe i can convince my husband to let me pull one. keep your fingers crossed
7/4/2006 7:37:06 AM
1) I wish my husband was more receptive to rescuing (or rather the animal care involved)2) Especially if we had a large enough place for me to do a lot more
7/4/2006 4:53:25 PM
I am on the same boat ncsutiger. My fiance is not crazy about having a house full of animals so therefore we are taking a break from fostering anymore animals. Hopefully it won't last too much longer. We will see. He always caves in.
7/4/2006 6:14:13 PM
Mine is the same way. I am thankful for what he does put up with though.
7/4/2006 7:59:40 PM
^^We made a deal - if he could get his Airsoft gun he's been wanting forever, then I could cut our fostering break short and just cycle on through. So he's got his MP5 and I have my dog.
7/5/2006 12:40:03 PM
i guess those dogs didn't make it. they aren't on petfinder anymore. i would love to get my hands on the person that dropped off the 2 acd's, the mix, and her whole litter of puppies. cold hearted! i wish more people cared enough to try other outlets instead of dumping at these high kill shelters.
7/6/2006 8:06:01 AM
Agreed. But fortunately Franklin County Animal Control is so well-advertised now that many rescues work with them, so hopefully they were pulled by one. The rescue I'm with doesn't pull from there because there are so many other smaller shelters that need help that don't get it.Problem is that summer seems to be a very packed, busy time in the unwanted animal world. All rescues I know of are full to the brim, and don't have enough foster homes to take care of the animals, so they can't get space open to pull more.
7/6/2006 9:33:46 AM
when did sound pet quit pulling from there? I guess maybe when they (Franklin co.) got popular? they still pull from chatham co. right?
7/6/2006 12:12:48 PM
Yeah they pull from Chatham, and Sparta, and then there are always those strays we all encounter outside of the shelter. Even though they're taking a break from pulling until the wine fundraiser is over, they have gotten a couple more in just because of their conditions - Leonard was threatened to be shot b/c he was a stray on this guy's property, and another maltese mix (i think) had such matted fur that it basically formed this protective covering. But yeah I think they generally don't go there (anymore?) because so many others do. There are some really sad situations elsewhere they'll focus on. I've told them about the animals listed in this thread, and been basically told that.
7/6/2006 1:15:25 PM
all the heeler mixs were rescued (the mother along with the whole litter included)the choc lab mother and the puppies were rescued as well along with most of the dogs there. so ~ 15 dogs and pups were rescued in time.along with all the kittensunfortunately the spaniel mix, the 2 black and tan shep mix puppies, and the 3 lab pups (2 black, 1 yellow) and the collie mix pup were all pts. they got more in.the boxer and yellow lab puppy will be put to sleep tomorow morning at 9:30 am unless they are rescued.a red and white border collie mix came in and might be pts tomorow morningalong with 2 owner surrender cats (both utd on shots, spayed, and indoor cats)theres also a senior chow chow mix who's time is up.thats ^ all i know as to who will be pts tomorow.the strays listed will get a few more days.i offered to rescue the irish setter if her owner is not found.
7/7/2006 12:41:27 AM
yea and the lab/dane mix was adopted
7/7/2006 12:42:15 AM
i just found out about the acd's last night. I was thrilled. I am glad jasmine got adopted too. there is an irish setter rescue in NC. I used to know a lady who did Irish Setter rescue, but I dont' have her contact info. thanks XCchik for the updates and all you do to save the animals!!!!
7/7/2006 8:20:29 AM
yea i figured i'd be able to find the Irish Setter a home pretty easily. if not be tempted to keep her. i've also loved that breed and she's beautiful
7/7/2006 11:43:39 AM
Do we know if the little cocker spaniel has been picked up? Breaks my heart to see all these dogs and cats. I might be able to talk the roommates into taking the cocker in until she finds a home.
7/7/2006 11:53:17 AM
okay I'm really confused. I just called about the Cocker Spaniel and the guy acted totally clueless about the dog. He said he thought he was adopted out yesterday but she's still on the list?! I found a home for her. What are the odds that he's wrong and she's still there? I'm hoping she's already been adopted but if not, I was gonna go get her in the next few hours. Any help?
7/7/2006 12:34:15 PM
the cocker was rescued along with the black female lab this morning.the list on petfinder isnt updated every day. the animal control officers there dont maintain the petfinder site. 2 volunteers go there every day or so and take pictures and update the list. they do a good job of updating every day or 2 but theres no guarantee its current.your best bet is to call and ask like you did. but the officers and people who answer the phone dont do anything with the website.if you want to get emails from the volunteers who maintain the site email Julie at heavenscent@nc.rr.com.she works with individuals and rescue groups to network and try to get as many animals rescued as possible. animals listed as urgent will be pts first while strays are given usually 3 days or so. they'll keep young puppies longer if they have space.
7/7/2006 2:10:05 PM
oh and if you want to adopt the little black cocker email Julie too. the odds are it hasnt found a home yet and is just in quarantine waiting for foster care
7/7/2006 2:11:03 PM
This thread makes me cry. I seriously don't know why I continue to click on it. I cry every time I do because I want to rescue those dogs, and I only live in a condo and can only have one dog.
7/7/2006 3:26:11 PM
^ i know its hard.if i had the means and owned my own house i'd do more.6 dogs in the house is more than enough. added today1 adult female beagle - friendlya young chow chow mix puppy ~ 4-5 months old.good news i found out who rescued the litter of lab looking puppies and the mother. unfortunately the mother has heartworms.. but the girl who rescued them is dedicated to finding them all homes and the pups have already been to the vet. if anyone is interested in a chocolate lab/pit/something? mix puppy let me know and i'll get you in touch with her.heres info:http://raleigh.craigslist.org/pet/178973012.htmlif anyone has info about helping the do with heartworms please email her.
7/7/2006 4:17:42 PM

I am going to get the Rottie bright and early in the morning
7/12/2006 1:59:14 AM
they have a rottie?
7/12/2006 8:13:50 AM
i just saw the rottie. are you pulling him for yourself or to foster?
7/12/2006 8:14:55 AM
I went to get the Rottie this morning and he was just the sweetest thing on the face of the earth. When I had to put him in the car he got very skiddish and snipped at me (I know that he was doing it because he was scared) Needless to say, the guy at the shelter told me he wasn't comfortable putting him in the car with me since I was alone. I was going to rescue him and then the Rottie Association was going to take him from me. He is SO sweet!!! If you can get him that would be wonderful otherwise I'm going to try and talk a roomie into going back with me after my dad's chemo appt. today! Please let me know
7/12/2006 11:43:58 AM
do you know why he was surrendered by the owner? rottie association= north carolina rottie rescue???? I want a male rottie but I am not ready for one yet. Did he snip at you when you picked him up to put him in the car? what were the circumstances?
7/12/2006 12:13:38 PM
sent ya a pm explaining it.
7/12/2006 12:20:35 PM
awesome!just so ya know the 2 cats i listed above were rescued.
7/12/2006 1:10:34 PM
I'm hoping to get back to the shelter today before it's too late. I was so sad to have to leave him there today. Got an email from the TriBeagle lady too. She said she's working to find the little lady a home. I offered but I can only do it for a short period. The momma cat with kittens was beautiful. I really just wanted to take all of them with me today-- the guy (even though he wasn't the nicest person) offered me a "2 for 1"...how thoughtful huh
7/12/2006 1:28:29 PM
yea half the animal control officers there are nice, the other not so nice.but its a togh job.was it a taller older guy?theres a short old man thats real sweet.if they give you any problems or you cant get there in time contact the volunteers - Julie or Viv (their info is on the petfinder site) and they'll help you. i could possibly go tomorow morning to pull him if you cant make it. the officers know me. although i cant possibly take in another. but will probably once i'm there. the kittens and momma will get rescued. (99% sure)and any purebreds have a good chance of getting rescued.its the shep and hound mix dogs and puppies that usually dont make it. or the strays who are just too wild.
7/12/2006 1:49:26 PM
Well today couldn't get any worse really. I am not going to be able to go back for the sweet boy. (I'm at Duke Hospital right now...thank goodness for wireless connection) But my dad is going to have to into extensive surgery in the morning and thus I will have to be here the next 2 days. It was a taller guy, kind of balding. He was just gruff and really short. I have been trying to get up with the Atlantic Rottie Rescue all day. She is finding him a foster home. There were some of the most precious pups, mixes there that I just wanted to take too. I'm hoping to talk my roommates into just taking in a few of them. Smaller of course because we live in a college house. I hate this right now...knowing that precious boy is there. Can anyone help?
