Box-and-1 doesn't work when there are three guys who are good 3-shooters.Have you watched Melchionni light up State the last two years when he was left open?

everyone picking duke as national champions was prob assuming at least one of them would be a star right awaynot happening
1/21/2006 4:04:17 PM
ive been saying all along that only playing 1guy on jj was the key. sheldon williams had the worst game of his carreer and paulus made alot of freshman mistakes but neither are bad players. paulus' heroics lead duke past memphis. its a thin line between what he did that game and what he did today. duke lost this game on the defensive end. an offense like gtown princeton wvu ncstate is burtal if executed right and gtown executed perfectly for the first 30 minutes of this game. ive never seen a princeton type offense with this much athleticism. and yes melchioni was a defensive liability today. having nelson wouldve really helped that situation.
1/21/2006 4:04:31 PM
I still firmly believe Duke's achilles heel' is their lack of a perimeter scorer besides JJright now they still only have two players averaging double figures in pointso yea and the fact that Shelden gets outplayed by any quality big man his size or taller[Edited on January 21, 2006 at 4:22 PM. I think the box and 1 would work against Duke. We had great success when we were double teaming JJ. With the box and 1, JJ always has a shadow, and you can double team both JJ and Williams. Force the role players to beat you. If you can hold JJ to just 20 points, you can win. The other guys get hot once in a while, but won't consistently shoot well enough to win the game.
1/21/2006 5:07:20 PM
GOD I wanted DUKE to get beat but NOT out of conference
1/21/2006 5:08:50 PM
wow. I guess you can beat duke. why couldn't it be to an acc teamHmm.. maybe if we didn't go 1/10 3pters that game we would have won as well...[Edited on January 21, 2006 at 7:30 PM. Reason : asdfasdfasdf]
1/21/2006 7:29:34 PM
^ yupreplace half of that dry spell at the end, with making half of the three pointers that we missedand we win
1/21/2006 7:36:27 PM
at the game, everyone cheered when they saw that duke lost on the scoreboard. This line of thinking is retarded. even if you hate an ACC team more then anything, you don't want them to lose out of conference. That just hurts our conference over all. I wanted duke to win every game this year till we beat them in the ACC tourney. Or if they lose atleast make it to ACC teams so we can move up in ACC standings. You should root for NCSU, then ACC over out of conference, then bottom of ACC over top of ACC(help us get better seed in ACC tourney). If you just don't like duke then thats fine, but I feel like people were cheering because Duke losing to Gtown was a good thing for us in some way. We just lost to a team that just lost to Gtown. Thats not good for us. Dumbasses.
1/21/2006 7:42:39 PM
^ Pre-freakin'-cisely.
1/21/2006 7:55:01 PM
and speaking for the other side, i hate over analytical fucks.i despise duke, and i'm glad they lost. even with the loss, they're a top 5 team, will probably climb back close to No. 1, and will make an impressive run through the ACC tourney before losing in the second round of the NCAA tournament. it's not like it makes us look "bad."
1/21/2006 7:56:55 PM
it isn't over analytical. a big part of seeding for the ncaa tourney is strength of conference. it is the reason we send teams to the dance that have 6-8 conference wins and other conferences send only the top 2 teams. you don't have to be super "analytical" to figure out that it is better for NCSU(the team I like) to have other ACC teams win their out of conference games. I guess i'm just an over analytical fuck for wanting us to be a good seed in the dance.
1/21/2006 8:03:17 PM
Uhh...Georgetown is not a bad team. This does not hurt us, or the conference.G-town has lost three away games (Illinois, WVU, UConn) and one at home to Vandy. But hey, let's put your reasoning to the test. Duke's #1 in the RPI right now. We'll see how far they fall after today.[Edited on January 21, 2006 at 8:06 PM. Reason : ]
1/21/2006 8:05:56 PM
Honestly though, if you want to put your disdain aside in favor of crunching numbers in the middle of January, go ahead. Me, I have certain teams that I'll NEVER pull for. 1. Maryland2. Carolina3. DukeThe only way I'll pull for any of those teams is if they're playing someone higher on that list right there. And Duke losing to a pretty decent GT team isn't going to put us on the bubble or drop us a fucking seed.
1/21/2006 8:08:22 PM
i'm not saying gtown is a bad team. they have a good basketball tradition, more the reason to want duke to beat them and help the conference look better as a whole. just wait till march and when they are talking seeds just listen to how many times "strength of conference" is mentioned, then come back to this thread if you think winning OOC games isn't important for any ACC team.if youare to closeminded to see that by having a better conference and sucking it up and wanting an ACC team to win which in the long run can help us, then you aren't even worth having a discusion with. [Edited on January 21, 2006 at 8:11 PM. Reason : dumbass]
1/21/2006 8:08:35 PM
It's going to affect their seeding a lot more than it's going to affect ours. Why, they might have to settle for a No. 1 seed in the second best region while we're stuck as a No. 3 seed instead of a No. 3 seed. I think, in the name of a rivalry, I can live with that.
1/21/2006 8:11:03 PM
Sure it matters in general, but Duke has already trounced several very, very good OOC teams.State is good enough this year that we don't have to put our fate in how other teams play their schedules. We're in control of our own fate.
1/21/2006 8:11:13 PM
in the name of rivalry? they just beat us idiot. if you get vindication for our crappy last 6 minutes of play vs. duke by having a team 300 miles away beat them then good for you.
1/21/2006 8:13:42 PM
I like to call people names whenever someone pokes holes in my argument. It's vindication whenever ANYONE beats Duke, Carolina or Maryland. Period.
1/21/2006 8:14:59 PM
Duke has only 5 guys they use.State has around 8 guys they constantly use.Dukes tired/exhausted 6 guys couldn't pull it out against a sorry nonconference team. I mean, come on they should have won right??No, Duke used so much of their 6 man fuel against us they had to be completely drained. And thats exactly what we saw today. In conclusion, Duke is not going to a championship game this year. That is exactly the opposite reason why we won today. We have more players and depth to use and thats what we used for 1/3 of the game.Good job pack. Having Simmons on the bench for almost 1/2 the game, great job. We would have beat duke even worse had we been Georgetown today.Again, I'd rather it be an ACC team that beats duke. But it shows what kind of teams we are. That is why Duke will have a 1 or 2 more losses this year in acc play.[Edited on January 21, 2006 at 8:36 PM. Reason : corrected]
1/21/2006 8:18:42 PM
u didn't poke holes in my arguement. i made an arguement based on facts that help the team i like. you're just to closed minded. you just have a blatent hate for other teams but haven't shown in anyway why it helps NCSU other then satisfying your own need for vindication that stems from our own team's shortcomings.and the only time i feel really good about a duke unc or maryland loss in terms of vindication(because i do hate them, don't get me wrong) is when our team actually steps up and does it.
1/21/2006 8:21:14 PM
Oh ok, so you only hate a team when it's convenient? How enlightened of you. I haven't found that switch to turn on and off yet. Playing a numbers game is more understandable when we're staring at a 20-11 season that's got us on the bubble. It isn't necessary when we're in the upper echelon of the conference. The impact is minimal for us where a Duke road loss to a good team is concerned. I get more satisfaction out of watching teams that I hate lose. And it isn't costing State a goddamn thing this year. I mean, really, can I make it any clearer?
1/21/2006 8:25:32 PM
Unchangeable dogma for State Fans1. Pull for State2. Pull for conference teams ahead of State in order to improve overall conference rating ALONG WITH STATES RANK3. Pull for lower ranked teams to beat teams higher ranked than state in conference playEND_OF_FILE
1/21/2006 8:28:23 PM
there are still a lot of games to be played, how do you know where we will end up this season? as of now miami is the second team in the acc. u think they will stay there? and i always hate those teams, but i don't always want them to lose. there is a difference. and maybe it doesn't make a HUGE difference, but the fact is it does help us and i'll take all i can get. you have no idea now if it will help our seeding and you have no idea if we will win all the rest of our games or lose them all.
1/21/2006 8:29:26 PM
^^^^^just out of curiousity, what 9 guys do we "consistently" use...i only count 7 consistently...bethel, brackman, ced, engin, evtimov, grant, cam...i dont think you can count mccauley since hes had like less than 10 minutes since the beginning of the season

I'm a very disappointed Duke fan.Duke was outplayed this afternoon. J.J. Redick can execute, but he can't do it alone. The rest was a matter of Georgetown's execution, which they did perfectly. And the question isn't whether it was because of their talent or because of a noticeably absent defensive effort from Duke. It was clearly both.I have to confess, when I heard there were two 7 footers on Georgetown's team I knew Duke was in for trouble. They ripped rebounds down on both ends of the floor, blocked shots, and put in lay up after layup all night over the quote-unquote Landlord. I'm proud they even managed to have a chance to win the game at the end after the piss poor defensive effort they showed for the first 38:45 of the game. The real test will be Duke's next game. They'll be coming off of their first loss of the season to face a team that came within 2 seconds of beating them earlier in the season. It'll be interesting to see how Shelden Williams will respond after practically disappearing against Georgetown (largely due to their defense). Hopefully they come out ready to respond. The good news is that the biggest target is off their back. Everyone wants to beat Duke of course, but everyone REALLY wants to be the first team to do it.
1/21/2006 10:06:42 PM
^ Dont blame Shelden for the loss. Its K's fault. How many backdoor cuts can you watch before you adjust your defense. I was there and Duke looked horrible. SO I enjoyed
1/21/2006 11:47:23 PM
K didn't have 3 of his biggest starters in this game to help with his adjustments... the officials were Big East.
1/22/2006 12:19:23 AM
refs are from the away teams conf?

I can't stand the "cheer for you conference when they play out of conference" logic. What State fan wants UNC and Duke to win, ever? The fact is, Duke and UNC are good enough programs where they will win enough games without me rooting for them, so I sure as hell ain't gonna start now so our RPI goes up .004 points. When we miss the NCAA Tournament because Duke loses to mid-level Big East team, then maybe I'll change my mind.
