here's more from the Correspondents Dinner
http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gmarchive/2006/04/two_presidents.html

i have to say.... it had me rolling. The impersonator is very very good, and Bush worked very nicely with him.
Now you have to forget for a minute that this is the most powerful man on earth sort-of admitting that he is a corrupt dumbass, or at least for once acknowledging that that's how people see him, or else it gets a bit depressing and infuriating.

""Colbert crossed the line," said one top Bush aide, who rushed out of the hotel as soon as Colbert finished. Another said that the president was visibly angered by the sharp lines that kept coming.

"I've been there before, and I can see that he is [angry]," said a former top aide. "He's got that look that he's ready to blow.""

on that note though, why the hell did they ask Colbert to host? they had to know that was coming.....

oh.... right.
well they should have known he was going to attack them (the AP, or the Press in general) as well.

i guess i was assuming it was more of a White House organized event, not so much an AP organized event.

Here is another take on the Press Dinner from Lefty Richard Cohen...

Quote :
"Why are you wasting my time with Colbert, I hear you ask. Because he is representative of what too often passes for political courage, not to mention wit, in this country. His defenders -- and they are all over the blogosphere -- will tell you he spoke truth to power. This is a tired phrase, as we all know, but when it was fresh and meaningful it suggested repercussions, consequences -- maybe even death in some countries. When you spoke truth to power you took the distinct chance that power would smite you, toss you into a dungeon or -- if you're at work -- take away your office.

But in this country, anyone can insult the president of the United States. Colbert just did it, and he will not suffer any consequence at all. He knew that going in. He also knew that Bush would have to sit there and pretend to laugh at Colbert's lame and insulting jokes. Bush himself plays off his reputation as a dunce and his penchant for mangling English. Self-mockery can be funny. Mockery that is insulting is not. The sort of stuff that would get you punched in a bar can be said on a dais with impunity. This is why Colbert was more than rude. He was a bully.

I am not a member of the White House Correspondents' Association, and I have not attended its dinner in years (I watched this year's on C-SPAN). The gala is an essentially harmless event that requires the presence of one man, the president. If presidents started not to show up, the organization would have to transform itself into a burial association. But presidents come and suffer through a ritual that most of them find mildly painful, not to mention boring. Whatever the case, they are guests. They don't have to be there -- and if I were Bush, next year I would not. Spring is a marvelous time to be at Camp David.

On television, Colbert is often funny. But on his own show he appeals to a self-selected audience that reminds him often of his greatness. In Washington he was playing to a different crowd, and he failed dismally in the funny person's most solemn obligation: to use absurdity or contrast or hyperbole to elucidate -- to make people see things a little bit differently. He had a chance to tell the president and much of important (and self-important) Washington things it would have been good for them to hear. But he was, like much of the blogosphere itself, telling like-minded people what they already know and alienating all the others. In this sense, he was a man for our times.
He also wasn't funny."

Comics like Colbert and Stewart are good at playing the role of the smart yet unmotivated kid who sits at the back of the class making smartass remarks about the teacher. But when you ask the kid to come up front and share his wisdom with the whole class, the comdey usually fades away into embarassment and arrogance. Colbert should stay at the Comedy Channel back-of-the-class.
From the cringing lack of laughter, the Press dinner wasn't a good venue for his brand of sarcasm.

Actually

When they share their wisdom, all the idiots in the front of the class that read 2 lines of an article five years ago making them an expert on said topic blurt out incoherent rabble that makes the entire endeavor a waste of time.

Stewart presents an "Aw shucks I'm just a comedian" front. But don't you think in his heart of hearts he desperately wants to be taken seriously as a champion of progressive thought?

There's of course Al Franken and Jeneane Garofalo (a recovering somewhat funny person), but even Jon Stewart is increasingly becoming a Big Thinker according to some liberals. . . . What does it say about the "real" spokespeople of the left--journalists, politicians, activists et al.--that the most appealing figures are ones who get to hide behind clown make-up whenever the kitchen gets too hot?"

You know, Jon Stewart is a lot more entertaining and insightful then O'Reilly frothing and spewing while ranting about the "War on Christmas."

As usual, that point flies over the head of many self described conservatives which really in this age means "lacking a sense of humor"

"Jonah Goldberg"

That's a pretty ironic quote coming from Jonah Goldberg -- his schtick has generally been to be the wisecracking smartass of the right. Granted he writes for the National Review, which is a Serious Magazine (aka Boring) so I guess that gives him some street cred.

Anyway ... the Colbert Report is pretty boring. But Colbert is an absolute genius at interviews. They should consider having him interact with people more, and with the camera less.

We can say the same about O'Reilly, Rush, Hannity, Pat Robertson, etc. on the right side of the spectrum.

i just got around to watching last thursday's Report, and a quote from one segment jumped out at me. He was doing the prom party thing where the Georgia Governer had an after-prom party.

Quote :
"this is prom weekend for the kids at Avery High, Central Haywood, East Henderson, St Vincient DePaul, Thousand Oaks, Smokey Mountain, McDowell, Polk County, Flat Point, Swain, Watauga, Sommerville, Cuyahoga Falls, Cabrillo, Marietta, Rosemont, Vernon Hills, and Washington Park"

All the schools in bold are High Schools in Western North Carolina, mostly around the Asheville region (east henderson, smokey mountain) and also in the northwest corner (mcdowell, watauga, avery). Of course there are tons of duplicate school names throughout the country, but many of these are completely unique (like Watauga and Smokey Mountain), and the rest of them bring up the NC schools first in a Google search for the names. In the first half of the list, the other schools seem to be in California, then in the 2nd half they are spread througout the south.

.... just kinda weird. i assume this is more or less a random list of high school names (i.e. not really having prom that weekend), but thought it was a bit weird they would get the plurality from small schools in western NC. Colbert is from SC, but i don't know if that would have anything to do with it.

Some friends and I caught that. We came to a few ideas... all those schools have anti-gay policies (and he's from SC so he could be familiar with them) or he just made a list of high schools according to the fan mail he receives.

all those school have anti-gay policies, or anti gay-discrimination policies?

i'm only closely familiar with Watauga (since I went there from 94-98), and i'm pretty sure it doesn't have any anti-gay policies. It's one of the most liberal-minded schools in NC (well, at least compared to its immediate neighbors, like Avery, Ashe and McDowell.
I can only find news stories about gay-discrimination

Apparently the people at DeLay’s legal fund think that Colbert is actually a conservative. Or maybe they’re just that desperate for supporters."

Ha, I saw that on Countdown. Obviously, conservatives are clueless about Colbert. Apparently, DeLay didn't learn from the correspondents' dinner.

He doesn't get it.
