I think Brutus and Caesar were pretty good friends before the Civil War although I am not certain. I would think so, since Caesar's famous last words were in complete surprise of why Brutus of all people would turn against him. From the show, it just seemed that Caesar was just being very honorable and diplomatic. From the previews of next weeks episode, he seemed pretty pissed that the guy killed Pompey. If Caesar had captured Pompey before he got to Egypt, he probably would have let him live. Or at least that is how the show portrays him.
