The worst thing I heard tonight was right after the game, when that ESPN chick said, "There haven't been any highlights since Brett Favre left the field..."

That's pretty funny... Glad to see Rivers play well even in the rain... It would have helped if some of those guys could have caught the ball...

I thought PRiv was decent. Hard to judge against mostly second string. I was just proud to see him out there, getting a little time in and completing a nice ass pass for a TD

I saw that too, i cant believe the Commentators didn't say anything, i know those bastards saw it too... made Rivers look bad for sliding and taking so much time...

^No it didn't. No one doubted it was anyone's fault but the refs. That's all the announcers were talking about.

I'm saying initially when i was watching it and he slid i said "oh no they are going to run out of time and make Rivers' clock management look bad" that's what i meant, then after i saw them kick it i knew why the coaches were so mad... It upsets me that they swept it under the rug and didn't say that the ball was kicked....

But they DID talk about how it was the right decision by Rivers and how he did the right thing by getting up there to spike it. And they DID talk about how it was the refs getting in the way and moving the ball that made it so he couldn't.

But you're right, they didn't talk about the kicking. But still, they praised Rivers on the play.

All in all, rivers did well. Especially compared with Aaron Rodgers who looked like shit. Lemon made a few decent passes, but they were out of bounds. He was definitely the better looking of the quarterbacks minus favre.

during the 2nd quarter there was a lot of first string D in there....KGB was the guy that sacked him, if he is second string then we are all in trouble

Yeah he did excellent and i'm not criticising him at all... He knew what had to be done and he was so close to getting it spiked... he didn't look like a lost puppy out there that's for sure...

I was kinda impressed considering the negative stuff i had heard from training camp recently. He definatly stepped in there and commanded the offense. Between the dropped balls and poor play calling, his numbers didn't reflect his confidence it seemed. Marty has to start lettin him throw the ball down field a lil bit, those 3 yard outs are killing his yards per game. This isn't state ne more...DB's in the NFL are as fast as the wide outs, hell...the linebackers are as fast as the wideouts...time to start runnin somethin deep pls marty...

and he is tall enough that he can throw over those guys with his somewhat side armed delivery... Example, the TD pass last night...

Also, does it seem like Brett Farve throws the ball harder every year, Jesus.. he knocked his TE down last night...

^^dude, first of all they probably didn't go deep bc it was raining basically the whole game, secondly, rivers probably has a few options and it's up to him to see if the long ball is there or not, but the main reason like i said is probably bc it was pretty wet. I think he played pretty well though. Seems like penalties and dropped balls ruined a lot of his drives, i can think of a few times when it could've been like first and ten or 2nd and 4 and it would end up like 3rd and 9, but that td drive was impressive

^^you could see that his height opened the field up for him, he will only get better at checking down on receivers....there were a few times last night when they showed a view from behind the QB where his options were sitting down in a nice hole in the D, but rivers still took the short dump down option

he will get better at making the right decision, and it looked like he became more comfortable with every play

and yes he looked skinny

I enjoyed Brees' facial expressions...

when Rivers would make a bad throw for an incompletion, Brees would smile and chuckle

when Rivers thrw that touchdown, Brees had a scowl on his face and reluctantly clapped

muahahhah

Hahaha, I noticed that.

But the part I thought was really hilarious was when they asked Brees about what it's like to mentor your replacement.

theisman was also all over p. riv last night.....

and at half they talked about the flawless play of farve and Brees, 2/5 with 20 something yds of passing and an INT on your first attempt is by no means flawless

Would also like to point out that while he might have been going against 2nd string D some of the time, he also had second string for a supporting cast (worse blocking from the O Line, lower quality receivers and backfield, etc). Basically, it all evens out.

When Phil took off on that run at the end of the half, he looked pretty quick.

Quicker than he ever did here.

Well, yeah, of course. But at the same time, it's extremely unlikely that we'll see Phil start this year. Brees had a bad quarter in the opening preseason game, but now that he's shown his talent and built confidence, I think he'll remain good.

And this quote from Marty about Kaeding applies as well (from an article on chargers.com):

Quote :
"“I’m a stubborn German and I’m going to keep putting Nate out there,” Schottenheimer said. “He can do it. I know he can. He’s our kicker, and he will do it.”"

He'll give Brees several games to get back into the swing of things.

I think Marty will be more lenient with a K in the pre-season than he will be his starting QB in the regular season. If Nate goes out there the rest of the pre-season and performs like he did last game, look for them to make sure they have another kicker by the first game of the season. But with starting QB's you can't really tell until the first game. If Brees goes out first game and has a pathetic first half, Marty would more than likely throw Rivers in the second half.

Maybe we'll have a State story, Brees goes down and Rivers has to come in and save the day, and then the rest will be history.

i highly doubt that he would put rivers in the 2nd half of the first game

i think it would take 4-6 pathetic starts from brees before they gave the job to rivers. they might even wait until the playoffs are out of the question, which i think will happen this year. i think the raiders will be this years' chargers.

I agree that it will take more than one half or game for Marty to give up on Brees. If the Chargers get decent QB production (be it from Brees or Rivers), and get Antonio Gates back, I think they should be a playoff team.

Brees blew the first couple of regular season games last year, and Marty kept putting him out there. I expect him to do the same this year if Brees has a slow start.

If Brees were to totally fuck up and drop 3-4 games, then we might see a switch. Don't plan on that happening, though.

But that also had to do with Rivers being out of camp for pretty much all pre-season. He just didn't have anything else to play at the time. Had Rivers not held out there is a good chance Brees is somewhere like Miami fighting for the job.

Oh we forgot about a 2nd string QB, verse the 2nd string secondary on the team with the WORST 1st string secondary in the entire league.

Im glad you guys can still get excited about Priv though. You should look towards following actual playing graduates like Holt.

Cheers
