If you're playing Super Smash Bros. online, the screen really only needs to focus on your character and the people close to him. With each person playing the game having their own screen, the game doesn't have to worry about including everyone on the screen at once.

Notice the fine print. Only Nintendo created titles such as zelda and mario will be free. Games by other developers in the past will cost whatever the developer wants to charge for it.

^^I'm sure you will still be able to buy those games. They can't make them too expensive, they know that nobody is gonna pay more than $10 for like Mortal Kombat.

Don't get me wrong, this is still huge. They just sold me a revolution with this move, I love all my old games. It'd just be better if all old nintendo games were going to be free Guess I'll settle for deep discount price though.

Well, I'm sure companies like Capcom will let you download for free :-p Or maybe just a small fee. The article states that progress hasn't been made on that avenue yet.

Besides, the ability to play SNES mariokart over the net is worth it alone.

I think it would be easy... just treat an internet player as you would a guy sitting next to you.

OK, that link goes to an article that says:

http://gamesradar.msn.co.uk/news/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=36071&subsectionid=1587

Quote :
"In a recent interview with US website GameSpot, Nintendo of America vice president George Harrison answered some burning questions, finally giving some kind of clue as to how Nintendo plans to play this generation.

....

"People sort of picked on us for not prematurely jumping into online or internet gaming," he mused, going on to point out that now the company has more to offer besides online gaming. Harrison then confirmed that past-gen, Nintendo-created titles will indeed be downloadable for free.
"

They must be referring to this interview, which said:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/26/news_6126595.html

Quote :
"GS: Now, what exactly is so revolutionary about the Revolution? Is this still kind of a state secret at Nintendo?

GH: That will be a number of things. I mean, certainly the virtual console concept we describe with the ability to download the past Nintendo games is going to make it very unique. Not that someone else couldn't add that function, but they certainly can't add that kind of library and that kind of archive.

GS: Do you plan on having like a per-download pricing model along the lines of the microtransactions that will be used in the next-gen Xbox marketplace?

GH: Well, we can use it in a variety of ways. We've used some of the older games already as little bonuses, either as bonus gifts or hidden in levels of games. Certainly for the first-party titles we'll be making some of those available. We haven't really talked about whether we would sell them. The third parties can make their own decision whether they want to sell them, or maybe they will add it on as sort of a free benefit when you buy a current version of the game. "

The idea of free downloadable games probably comes from this:

Quote :
"GS: To continue with what's so revolutionary about the Revolution...

GH: Well, I think certainly being wireless out of the box is revolutionary. People sort of picked on us for not jumping in prematurely into online or Internet gaming, but we just looked at it, the way it was evolving, and just felt that it was not time to jump in. But certainly with the next console it would be, with a couple of important changes like eliminating the access fee so there's not really a monthly subscription, and making use of first-party games, downloadable for free. That to us will be really revolutionary. Right now the estimates are anywhere between six and maybe 10 or 12 percent of console owners are playing online. You know, if you really have people embrace it and enjoy it, we think that should be well over 50 percent. I think I heard Nintendo president Mr. Satoru Iwata, and Nintendo vice president of sales and marketing, Reggie Fils-Aime, say this morning as much as 90 percent is the goal for DS online, which is a great goal, rather than keeping it a niche aspect of gaming, to make it a broad-based application. "

It's bogus, or contradicted himself 30 seconds before telling the truth. Nowhere does he confirm that all of the downloadable games will be free and he merely says some first-party games will be downloadable for free. If Nintendo really was gonna give ALL of their past first-party games away, don't you think that'd be a major talking point in their presentation at E3?

I hope it would be free. But either way, I'm still not really convinced about this system being revolutionary. I'm just gonna wait it out to see what else Nintendo will come up with, especially w/ 3rd party support and mature games. I just really hope the Resident Evil series will still be on the Nintendo line up.

There's some disappointing news for those expecting these classics to be available for free. Nintendo is planning on pay downloads as being the standard for this download system. There will be many types of services, though, including limited time free downloads. One possibility mentioned by Iwata is free downloads as bonuses for buying new games.

Backwards compatibility for GameCube goes beyond just the software. You'll be able to use all controllers (Wave Bird included), memory cards, the Mario Party microphone, the Dance Dance dance pad and even the Donkey Konga konga controller."

So I just read Nintendo is not supporting HD games...Is it just me or is this a really bad move. Honestly, why the fuck is Nintendo always hesitant to do something. I mean they didn't do online gaming cuz they didn't think it was time for online gaming and now look at them.

i still think good-looking hi-res games will be expensive and few and far-between..

way too much work for designers and developers to pull off a 40-50 hour game with that much detail and way more expensive.. it will be passed on to the consumer

hardly any games are 40-50 hours long anyway so ur point isnt taken. truthfully i dont care if its that extra nice, cuz my tv's suck anyway. but short, awesome looking, well designed gaems are fine by me.

This point really pisses me off. The Nintendo Gamecube pretty much MADE me want a HDTV. People might not notice the difference in some games, but Super Smash Bros. and Soul Calibur II look fucking sweet in 480p. And if people can appreciate the difference in detail in those games (like I most certainly do), what makes Nintendo think the detailed textures of next-gen systems won't make a difference?

If they support 480p and 720p I won't mind, but if they completely drop progressive scan support I'm gonna be pissed the fuck off. They may as well drop Dolby Digital surround sound while they're at it. By 2008 their technology will be behind the times again. This is just like CD's and online support.

Honestly, it's another BIG strike against them if they don't support progressive scan at all and the decision sounds like another instance of looking at Japan instead of America. More and more people are jumping on the HD bandwagon and if they go into a store and are told that the Revolution doesn't support HD pictures, it's one more reason to pick up an Xbox 360 or PS3.

Quote :
"Miyamoto and Iwata Talk Revolution
Also, a few details on Mario 128 and DS/ Revolution connectivity.
by Juan Castro
July 25, 2005 - In a recent interview with EGM, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto commented on the upcoming successor to the GameCube, codenamed Revolution, and offered a few details on Mario 128 and the future of Nintendo in general.

To start though, Iwata faced a series of questions focused on Nintendo's philosophy on game design, which sometimes places innovation above technological pizzazz. With the next-generation of videogame consoles on the horizon, longtime Nintendo fans worry the Nintendo Revolution simply won't compete with Microsoft's Xbox 360 or Sony's PS3 on a graphical level.

"I don't think the Revolution's [graphics] will be inferior in any fashion to Xbox 360 or PS3," said Iwata. "Even if you look at Zelda on GameCube, I don't think that looks inferior to what the competition is touting as 'next generation' visuals. But we think there are more important things for now than making the system work with a high-definition television."

Iwata went on to say that most people who will be playing the Nintendo Revolution won't be doing so on high-definition compatible television sets anyway, and that 480p (progressive-scan) will remain the standard. Bottom line, according to Iwata, is Nintendo's desire to create a system capable of attracting as many people as possible. On the same note, Iwata said Nintendo had no desire to make people pay extra out of the box for the Revolution's DVD functionality, since most people already own one or more DVD players. He also reiterated that the DVD player will be built-in and not an external attachment. At E3 2005, the company confirmed that an additionally purchased dongle would activate the built-in DVD functionality.

As far as the Revolution's Internet connectivity is concerned, the system will be Wi-Fi compatible out of the box but won't come with an Ethernet port. Instead, Nintendo will sell an Ethernet adaptor for the Revolution's USB port. Iwata said it would be difficult, given where the Revolution will be in a household [probably the living room] for players to connect the Revolution to a traditional Ethernet line.

Moving from hardware to software, Miyamoto said Nintendo is considering a DS version of the classic brawler Super Smash Bros. He also said that he'd like to make another Luigi's Mansion game and that a Pikmin game on Revolution would be a "good match" given the Revolution's unique and totally mysterious controller. But he said nothing about Pikmin Revolution was set in stone. Miyamoto also said that if it's technically possible on Revolution, then tweaking older games such as Mario Party for online play was a definite possibility.

Finally, Iwata spoke on the Revolution's unique interface and if it would alienate third-party developers.

"Well, of course, the idea is that the Revolution will sell and sell and sell so it becomes the standard in the industry," Iwata mused. "However, at least for the launch period, we designed the controller so it can play any of the different conventional styles. After all, we are talking about it playing games from our past machines (i.e. the virtual console). So don't worry."

Stay tuned for more. "

480p support is something. Online play in older titles would be the shit. The USB Ethernet adapter is a smart move too.

Quote :
"Peter Molyneux of Lionhead Studios (Black and White, Fable, The Movies) was quizzed at the Leipzig European Games Convention currently in progress; and has added to the positive comments from developers across the industry. Details inside.

Molyneux had this to say of the Nintendo Revolution's controller:

"There is a line at the end of the book 'Game Over' and it is: 'Never underestimate Nintendo'. That is all I can say about the controller."

This is great news for Revolution fans, as such positive support from as influential figures as Yuji Naka and Peter Molyneux can only mean good things to come.

RevoGaming will keep you updated.

It is really kinda difficult to think about what they could be doing with this controller to make it so new and revolutionary, but if you think about it, most of the things standard on any controller these days were pioneered by Nintendo. And online play for older games would be great. I am looking forward to playing Goldeneye and SSBM online.

That controller would suck. Gyroscopic motion sensors are just too sensitive and not stable enough for everyday gaming. Plus, people are too damn lazy too hold their arm out and keep it steady. Sidewinder PC controllers have had stuff like this before and it just sucked for use but was neat none the less.
