never played hockey but im pretty athletic, could prolly adjust, always wanted to try it

There are tons of learn-to-play classes around that are fun.
9/14/2005 2:33:58 AM
there is a learn to play at the Iceplex thurs. nights from 9:15-11:45pm, always a good crowd, 15+ guys, free for goalies. I've helped coach that clinic a few times.
9/14/2005 2:36:44 AM
why is goalie free? no one likes that job or something?
9/14/2005 2:39:52 AM
they want goalies to show up, so no charge. It's $20 for skaters. Isn't that how it is for pick-up, free for the goalie?
9/14/2005 2:43:29 AM
i mean, does no one want to goalie or something? why so much demand for goalies that its free, is it hard? does it hurt? tell me here
9/14/2005 2:44:23 AM
1. It's hard.2. The equipment is expensive.3. It's a lot of pressure.4. It hurts.5. Most guys like to score.6. It's dangerous.Basically, if you don't want to be a goalie, you don't have what it takes, because you have to have a burning desire to keep the puck out of the net.[Edited on September 14, 2005 at 2:46 AM. 9/14/2005 2:45:56 AM
do they provide equipment, and how is it dangerous?....this is getting my interest
9/14/2005 2:49:28 AM
hey vinylbandit, why are sports so gay, especially hockey?
9/14/2005 2:51:34 AM
They don't provide equipment. If you want to play a modern style, you're looking at at least $600 to cobble together a set of used equipment that's protective. It's dangerous because you're putting yourself in the direct path of frozen-solid pucks flying at you at various speeds. Last week I had one hit me in the collarbone that had me down on the ice for a minute or so. Luckily, it hit my lexan throat guard before it did. Without the lexan, I probably would have a broken collarbone/something crushed in my throat right now.On top of that are the normal daily things, like big bruises to the knees that last two weeks when a slapshot sneaks through, or stingers in the break of the elbow that have your arm a bit number for a minute or so.^ Probably the same reason the Stratocaster is the gayest-looking guitar ever built. They just are/it just is.[Edited on September 14, 2005 at 2:55 AM. Reason : s]
9/14/2005 2:54:13 AM
ima do it
9/14/2005 2:55:46 AM
If you can skate, I'd be more than happy to meet you at a learn to play with my extra set of stuff and let you have at it.The biggest thing to focus on is that you can have absolutely no fear. If you're wearing decent head protection and you're not willing to put your face in front of a shot to keep it from scoring, you probably don't have what it takes.[Edited on September 14, 2005 at 3:00 AM. 9/14/2005 2:57:26 AM
Or not.
9/14/2005 3:07:05 AM
i got a buddy that plays, im sure he can show me how much i really wanna do it...but yea, im gonna look into it and try it, might as well
9/14/2005 3:09:36 AM
Goaltending is the most fun thing in the entire world if you're into it. If you're not, it's the most miserable, nerve-wracking experience you can have playing a sport. One thing to note is that athleticism is a lesser part of the goaltending equation, coming after positioning, mental process, technique, and reflexes. The most athletic part is basically being able to move swiftly from side to side and front to back with forty pounds of equipment on.[Edited on September 14, 2005 at 3:13 AM. there's going to be a line for the free tickets? shit, glad i ran into this thread.
9/14/2005 6:19:20 AM
There is no real line to get in. I am told tickets will be distributed at the Caniac Carnival starting at 10 AM until they're all gone. I already have mine, so I won't be there until it's time for warmups.
9/14/2005 11:14:45 AM

9/17/2005 1:34:52 PM
My uncle is the goalie on a recreational hockey team
9/17/2005 1:35:46 PM
bttt for Cam and Archie
9/18/2005 12:47:31 PM
Why was Gerber a sack of shit tonight?
9/18/2005 5:59:27 PM
I'd say only two of the goals could be put on his shoulders. He was shaky, yes, but he was chasin' dekes all the way wide during the shootout.
9/19/2005 12:37:33 AM
that doesnt mean he controlled rebounds well. one of those goals noone could have stopped. came off of one of the panthers shinguard.oh, yeah, interesting tidbit... Carins doesnt wear slash guards The way that fuck face was palying i would have slashed the fuck out of his wrist.
9/19/2005 1:03:23 AM
What kind of difference have you noticed in your play and the play of the NHL in the form of the smaller creases?
9/19/2005 1:13:26 AM
The crease is pretty much irrelevant since they ditched the interference rule. The USA Hockey crease infringement rule really only comes into play with screeners, too, and they're at the top where the size is the same...so I'd say no change.
9/19/2005 1:21:08 AM
TRAPEZOID
9/19/2005 1:34:59 AM
Speaking of the trapezoid, I played a game at the RecZone tonight with the new lines, and I'll be damned if that trapezoid isn't TINY.
9/19/2005 1:38:42 AM
Dear Goalie,Why is it that when I card somebody at work, they always have to give me grief (and, in the case of one drunk jackass last night, proposition me for sex) because my store is strict as hell when it comes to the state's alcohol and tobacco laws?
9/19/2005 1:44:00 AM
do you work at the crown or some shit
9/19/2005 1:44:41 AM
yeah, i thought that the trapzoid was small as hell.
9/19/2005 1:44:52 AM

9/19/2005 1:45:46 AM
cooli never go there cause its way inconvenient[Edited on September 19, 2005 at 1:46 AM. Reason : and i dont live in raleigh, thats another reason]
9/19/2005 1:46:21 AM
why do goalie gloves smell so much worse than Forwards and Defensemens
9/23/2005 2:13:41 AM
Mr. Goalie, After watching DiPietro pass the puck out to a forward taking advantage of the lifted two-line pass it made me wonder if more goalies would be handling/passing the puck more since they are handcuffed from going into the corners. Your thoughts?Man, after reading all of this it makes me want to get my skates sharpened.
9/23/2005 4:17:25 AM
^^ Unlike forward gloves, the palm and finger stalls of the goalie's catch glove are never directly exposed to air unless it's forced through, creating a haven for bacteria.^ The only goalies who will be passing the puck more are the ones who were doing it in the first place (DiPietro, Turco, Brodeur, etc.). I don't think you'll see any of the non-handlers start to test their skills more often, though you may see more of them sprinting to the circles to stop the puck and send it up for a d-to-d instead of slowly skating back to wait for it behind the net (in lieu of going to the corners).
9/23/2005 8:54:29 PM
bttt
9/25/2005 3:20:13 AM
bttt since there's hockey threads aboot
9/26/2005 2:12:35 AM
Hey here's a question why are goalies such dumb jerks!
9/26/2005 2:13:11 AM
They're dumb because they get hit with pucks on purpose. They're jerks by way of inflated egos that come from being the only ones willing to get hit by pucks on purpose.
