Renley Santorum is quite a stretch
4/26/2012 5:07:46 PM
two closeted guys who werent expected to put up a fight but ended up amassing a large following?
4/26/2012 10:43:03 PM
i'm confused are you calling rick santorum gay or are you saying renley later becomes homophobic to overcompensate for his gayness or both. Hasn't he always had a large army?
4/26/2012 10:47:30 PM
i'm calling rick santorum gay and i thought renley amassed his large army after he fled kings landing
4/26/2012 10:48:50 PM
Renly fled Kings Landing, married into the Tyrell family and came back with their army.

CAME BACK????? SPOILER ALERT!!!!

Can someone clear up some pre-series stuff for me? Shouldn't involve spoilers so if it does PM me. The mad king was killed by Jamie. Robert B then became king. Ned was Roberts friend from childhood. Explain how Jamie killing the king made Robert B king. And what armies fought to overthrow the mad king. Like how the Starks and Robert Bs brothers factored into that war.I know I know. Jamie was on the mad kings knights guard or whatever. But still can't put together how him killing the king made RB boss[Edited on April 26, 2012 at 11:06 PM. Reason : .]

ned stark made jamie come down off the throne, i think they addressed that in an episode
4/26/2012 11:10:14 PM
^^ Lyanna Stark (Ned's sister and Robert's fiancee) was kidnapped by Prince Rhaegar and when some Starks went to rescue her the King had them killed, and that pretty much started the Rebellion. House Lannister were allied to the Targaryens during the war but switch sides at the very last minute when Jaime kills the King himself, earning him the nickname 'Kingslayer'. The Lannisters agree to take Robert as King if he agrees to marry Cersei.[Edited on April 26, 2012 at 11:43 PM. Reason : ]

the starks that were killed by aerys were eddard's father, rickard, and oldest brother, brandon, who was originally supposed to marry catelyn. robert had a targaryen (grandmother maybe?) ancestor, so of all the rebels, his claim was the most legitimate.

This is a good and pretty short read on Robert's Rebellion. I highly recommend it since the show hasn't gotten into the whole backstory as deep:http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Robert%27s_Rebellion[Edited on April 27, 2012 at 8:06 AM. Reason : ]

^^I'm continually amazed at how natural she seems on screen. I almost always cringe at child actors in general due to how much their acting seems forced but I think she has portrayed Arya fantastically.[Edited on April 30, 2012 at 9:29 AM. Reason : ]

When I read it in the book it stunk like Deus Ex Machina and it still felt the same way in the show. "Whelp, I have too many plots, let's kill one off with the quickness...ALLAKHAZAM!"
4/30/2012 10:51:21 AM
In the book it didn't feel like that at all to me but in the show it did some, probably because I knew it was coming this time.
4/30/2012 11:15:27 AM
The Renly death scene was lame. There was no build up. It happened too fast.I know cool shit is supposed to happen soon, but so far this season has been really slow. No battle scenes with Robb... the wall story is stupid... Dany/Quarth/dragons is really slow... Theon's story is annoying... Hardly any scenes with Jamie... The Harrenhal scenes are confusing... The only parts I look forward to are the Tyrion scenes.
4/30/2012 11:16:29 AM
I also wasn't the biggest fan of how the Renly scene played out on screen. I liked the episode as a whole, but they totally blew that imo (and I was really looking forward to that scene). This is what I was referring to last week when I said I wasn't sure why they changed the Shadow portion of the story. In the book, I remember the death being a cliffhanger because he just all of a sudden starts bleeding from the neck. There was mention of a shadow but I seem to remember having no idea what happened and just thinking "wtf?" as Catelyn's POV chapter ended.I feel like they killed the scene with the change. A lot (most) of the changes they have made have flowed pretty seamlessly and were good decisions but that one just didn't feel right. As far as the rest of the season goes, I've been very happy. And the show actually has more scenes with Robb than I recall the book having (almost all of Robb's story happens "off-screen" in the 2nd book due to him not having a POV but obviously they had to sprinkle him in some for the show)[Edited on April 30, 2012 at 11:33 AM. I agree that the Renly death scene was shot pretty weak. Should've ended last week's episode with it and they didn't need to actually show the shadow monster or whatever. They could've just showed the crazy Melisandre birth scene, maybe showed a quick glimpse of something shadowy, and then flash to the next scene and show Renly mysteriously start bleeding from the neck. I think the audience would've put two and two together, plus that death should've ended an episode; it felt anticlimactic at the beginning of last night's episode.I can kind of understand why they did it that way, though. It's possible that if they were more vague/mysterious about it (as opposed to actually showing the shadow thing killing Renly), some of the audience might've suspected that Brienne killed Renly. They are clearly building Brienne to be a fiercely loyal, heroic character that the audience roots for, so it's possible they just didn't want any lingering ambiguity over whether Brienne was the one who actually killed Renly. That might be why they made it so lamely explicit.Aside from that petty complaint, though, I thought last night's episode was really phenomenal. Arya's scenes were the best (the one with Tywin and the ones with Jaqen), but again, I liked the dynamic between Theon and everyone else in the Iron Islands. The show has handled Theon's character brilliantly in my opinion and I've loved just about every scene with Theon this season. The Wall scenes were pretty boring this time 'round, but overall I thought it was another fantastic episode in what's been an incredible season. Can't wait for what's to come.
4/30/2012 1:04:52 PM
My only complaint is that it was a wasted scene at the very start of an episode. It should've been an episode ender with Brienne panting right after she killed the other men...cut to black.
4/30/2012 1:26:30 PM
I liked seeing Theon get laughed at by the veteran raiders when he tried to assert his dominance. All season he's been talking a big game about he's going home to take over his rightful place in the Iron Islands, yet no one there takes him seriously. From banging that busted chick (probably one of the ugliest girls I've even seen naked on TV) to having his sister and father disrespect to him to having that brown toothed guy last tell him he's been reaping and raving since before he was born, I've thoroughly enjoyed witnessing my second most hated character get his just desserts thus far this season.
4/30/2012 2:35:42 PM
That begs the question of who you're most hated character is...
4/30/2012 2:58:18 PM
I was under the impression that the most hated character for anyone who watched this show was pretty much unanimous...
4/30/2012 3:37:50 PM
How anyone can hate any character besides Joffrey is beyond me.

FWIW, Arya doesn't even have Jaqen kill The Tickler in the book. She has him kill the other dude (Cheswyck or something?) that tortures people along with The Tickler, presumably because he hit her earlier. More or less the same significance, but an interesting change nonetheless.
