Just discovered James Rollins. Started with Amazonia and now on the second novel of the Sigma Force series (Map of Bones). He's filling my Michael Crichton hole very nicely!

Still trudging my way through the Wheel of Time series. Shit's killing me. On book 9. At least they're getting shorter, though.

That's about when Sanderson took over, the pace really picks up.AnyMac, how's that new series?
4/1/2014 8:01:15 AM
^^I don't think I ever made it past 6-7. The first 3-4 were awesome though.
4/1/2014 11:59:14 AM
^ I gave up after 4.

^^^ Good so far, about halfway through book. World is very unique (physically especially, pretty alien landscape and climate) and I enjoy the characters and story. First one came out 4 years ago and there are supposed to be up to 10 books in the series, so hopefully now that he is done with wheel of time they will be coming out faster. Because I doubt I will care about this series 30 years from now.One of the main characters is nearing the precipice of becoming a mary sue who is super good at everything. That's what IMO ruined Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller series (which I read two books of, and enjoyed one and a half of them, won't be finishing the series). Hopefully that doesn't end up happening here.

Do you possibly have a bigger picture? I can't even tell what book that is.

Reading the Farseer Saga by Robin Hobb again. Been a while, and I love this series. Plus, she's putting out a new one this summer.

Picked up Chuck Palahniuk's new book Beautiful You and read it on the plane from San Jose to RVA.I've read many of his books and generally love his style. Beautiful You is a complete departure from what I'm used to with Survivor, Fight Club, Choke, and others. It's a poorly developed story, without the usual clever satirical jabs at society-- or at least it seems to try, but doesn't really make a point. It's like he threw this out there to meet his contractual obligations to his publisher. I dunno, I've loved every other novel he's wrote, but this one was crap.

The Worst Hard Time by Timothy EganIt's about the Dust Bowl. I got the book a couple years ago and kinda forgot about it till recently. Really enjoying it. Obviously, I've always known about the Dust Bowl and knew it was bad, but I guess I never realized just how bad it was till reading this (also saw a Ken Burns documentary a couple years ago). Seems like we kinda glossed over it in school and focused more on the Great Depression in general and not specifically the Dust Bowl in that time period.

I've been making my through this, and it's great even though I originally bought it because I confused it with Between the World and Me. However, I've been absolutely sucked in by He's built a really interesting world. I've been on a bit of a fantasy kick lately (City of Stairs and The Emperor's Blades), and this has been another fun ride

Complete works of H.P. Lovecraft since Halloween is coming up. Listening to Will Durant's "Story of Civilization" series on audible during my commutes. Started Our Oriental Heritage this week. It's perhaps a bit dated in some ways but it's probably the best total encapsulation of man's history I've ever come across.

Only 48 more hours on this first volume. LOL

Anyone else read The First Law Trilogy? Finally read it the last month or so (read most of book 1 several years ago, got distracted and never finished) and I really enjoyed it but was disappointed by the ending. Still enjoyed the time I spent reading it regardless.

Joe Abercombie? Fuck yes, I love that series so much. Curious what about the ending you disliked though. If you enjoyed it overall he has several standalone spinoff novels set in the same realm that feature many of the secondary/tertiary characters from the trilogy.[Edited on February 12, 2019 at 4:22 PM. ^ def planning to read those as well at some point. ATM I think I need a change of scenery but I enjoyed the world and his writing so I'm happy there is more.As far as the ending. I just felt it kind of threw a lot of potential character development out of the window. It wasn't terrible it was just kind of flat to me. I didn't want, nor did I expect, an ending where everything was buttoned up tight in this series. You could tell that's not the kind of writer he is. But still, the ending as-is just felt a little meh. Like a sudden stop for some story-lines whereas others were just busy as normal - ignoring character development that seemed to be building over the course of the books.

I used to read the Lady Georgiana series by Rhys Bowen. The main character was so enjoyable and then I got miffed by something the author posted on a forum to which I retorted and now I miss Georgie! UghMy best friend is into romance and I wanted to read one romance novel cover to cover and I couldn’t do it. To each his own [Edited on March 14, 2019 at 10:59 AM. Reason : Venting]
