wow, that last page has some reallllly overdone excitement over a backup big man. This guy is good filler for our recruiting class for sure, but if he ends up being one of our top 3 in this class it's meh.

face have you ever watched a second of kyle washington in a basketball game (not highlight videos)

we have that voice of reason... his name is jibbles

Washington is ranked right around where Marcus Melvin was ranked (I remember him being a 50-75 recruit).I'll take a Marcus Melvin in a heartbeat (without the 'tude). We just need to add another immediate impact big man.
9/24/2012 7:32:01 AM
I love when I see Face posting. It means I can skip that entire text box and move on to the next one no matter what section I'm reading. I appreciate the time he saves me to really enjoy the other aspects of my life. Thanks Face!

Washington, at the least, will likely be a 4-year player who provides much-needed frontcourt depth next season. It's a good signing, one that needed to be made. If Thornwell commits, I would imagine that we won't be seeing a 4th commitment from Torian Graham.Getting either Thornwell or Graham, plus a premier big man like Randle, Meeks or Anya, would round out this class quite well. We have the scholarships to sign 5-7 total, but a 4-man class with 2 bigs would put us where we need to be.[Edited on September 24, 2012 at 8:42 AM. Reason : 2]

He's a baseline recruit. We are always going to be able to land someone at the bottom of the top 100 in our current setup.Getting someone like this is just normal, there's no reason to be excited. It's not like if we missed on this guy that someone equally as talented wouldn't commit. He's a commodity, we wouldn't have to play with four players without him.Remember all the lack of caring when painter left? He's approximately Painter except four years less developed. These are the kind of guys who typically can't crack the rotation on a top 20 roster, or are role players on borderline at large schools. He would be a "big" signing at Dayton or George Mason. In the ACC he's likely a warm body unless he improves massively. Not to say that can't happen, but that really happens just as frequently with guys outside the top 100 that no one on this board has ever heard of before.
9/24/2012 9:09:36 AM
Fuck, face is now trolling the recruiting threads? Please, make it stop.I don't think anybody is under the illusion that Washington is going to be star from the get-go. He appears to be a solid big-man who'll be able to contribute. And as of now, the only two big guys we'll have next year is Vandenburg and De Thaey. So yes, some people are excited about a 4* top75 forward. Hopefully we can pick-up another PF/C that is more of an "elite" big.
9/24/2012 9:09:47 AM
Apparently we are in the final two for Thornwell. (Us and South Carolina) Although many think he is a heavy south carolina lean. Not sure if there is a frank martin connection, or he has some other Gamecock ties, but many/most think he is a lock to go there.
9/24/2012 9:15:30 AM
Nothing face posted in the first post on this page is wrong (I don't necessarily agree with the most recent post regarding Washington). Collins was pretty damn awful most of his time at State while Painter played a critical role on our Sweet 16 team last year. As for Gott finding gems, he has yet to prove that. They brought in Alex Johnson last year and he was serviceable, but it is not like Gott has found some under the radar guy and made him into a legit player. This is not criticism of Gott either, if he can recruit 4 and 5 star guys all the time, then he doesn't have to worry about finding diamonds in the rough. [Edited on September 24, 2012 at 9:21 AM. Well, that would obviously be something different altogether. He does have a really nice offer list for someone ranked #86, so its certainly possible that he's improved since the most recent rankings.[Edited on September 24, 2012 at 10:33 AM. Reason : a]
9/24/2012 10:33:12 AM
And those rankings fluctuate pretty regularly all the time.So making snap judgements about how good he's going to be based on his ranking is really just a unproductive as making snap judgements about how bad he's going to be.Why don't we appreciate the interest in playing for the Pack and judge his on the court merits after he's played a few games.
9/24/2012 10:40:35 AM
It's just the negativity that I don't get. We needed a forward badly, we got a 4* forward, and face comes in here basically criticizing our new recruit as a "baseline recruit", looking for a reaction (which he got, and derailed yet another thread). Last year's class will probably be an exception, not the rule. I'll always be happy with top100 guys, with some 5* guys sprinkled in.
9/24/2012 10:43:39 AM
From #86 to inside the top 20 does not happen all the time this late in the game. That's exceedingly rare even when someone signs at unc and gets the mandatory rankings boost
9/24/2012 10:44:21 AM
it happens often when guys grow from a smallish PF to a legit centerjohn henson had the same thing happen to him
9/24/2012 10:45:27 AM
He was ranked #66 in one of the polls (either Scout or ESPN, I forget)A couple years ago you guys would've been excited about him being our top recruit. Now you're telling me that he's worthless and we should pass on him? Please.

washington will finish higher in the rankings that. maybe not top 20 (although it's certainly possible), but top 50 is pretty likely i think. especially if he keeps growing.]

Josh Powell is a guy who shot up from barely in the top 100 to being a top-50 recruit by the final rankings.Jordan Collins and Deshawn Painter went the opposite way, going from top-25 recruits as Sophomores to being barely in the top 100 as Seniors.Powell was a skinny forward in highschool who gained hype because of his athleticism. Collins and Painter both had the body of a college center early on in highschool, but slid because their lack of athleticism was exposed in the AAU circuit. Those final rankings ended up being pretty accurate. Based on the write-ups I've seen about Washington, the dude is not lacking for athleticism or ball skills. Scouts rave about his potential, since he's a 6'9" guy who can get up and down the floor. If he grows another inch and gains 20 lbs, he'll be a force down low. It really shouldn't surprise anyone if he shoots up the rankings this year and ends up in the top-50 or higher. [Edited on September 24, 2012 at 11:12 AM. Reason : 2]

BTW, just looked him and he is ESPN #66, which is not too shaby at all for a position that we desperately need. So yeah, I am extremely happy.

I don't have a problem with anything that face posted on this page and the last page. I don't get all the accusations of negativity and attacks. He isn't jerking off with everyone else over a top 75 recruit and people want to kick him off the wagon. He essentially said: OK, so we landed a 4-star big man that has potential - it's good for immediate position need and depth, but hopefully this staff isn't content yet. Others have stated this too, yet face gets all the shit.I pretty much feel the same way. If he can improve this season and jump in the rankings, good for him. But yeah this is pretty normal for a high major program with history to land a top 100 recruit.

Washington really seems like just a hedge against missing on Anya or Randle. Solid pickup but nothing to get excited about.
9/24/2012 12:19:16 PM
Staff put on the full court press for this guy. They along with lots of others believe he is on the verge of becoming a much more highly recruited guy. As another poster has said, he is still growing and he had a big summer. 6'9 guy who can rebound, run the floor and step out for the 3. Also has a mid-range jumper and a hook shot he can go to. He can also dunk from the standing position.
9/24/2012 12:19:30 PM

I didn't miss the turnovers he would produce at the worst possible times due to lazy passing or careless dribbling. Watching Melvin play, like with Julius Hodge, was always a nerve-wracking experience. You had to accept the boneheaded plays along with the great ones. But hell yeah, Melvin could shoot the ball.[Edited on September 24, 2012 at 12:43 PM. Reason : 2]

if we hit at least one home run 5 star player a year and have a balanced roster full of 4 star players, we'll be a consistent top 15 program with the coaching staff we currently have. considering where we were 4 years ago, that's pretty good. you people will find anything to complain about...
