Is this a good deal?

Glock 19-9mm
3rd gen
includes 250 rounds of ammo and 2 mags
$400?

I just completed my CCW class and about to apply for my license. I have been shooting my friends Glock, same model, and I really like it. It's in mint condition and was owned by a woman who bought it for home protection. It maybe has 100-200 rounds fired out of it, we are guesstimating.

If it's in 98%+(Like new) condition and has been maintained properly, then that's not a bad deal - pretty average.

Thanks, I think I am going to get it. I have no real background with guns but my friends, cops, miltary, etc, all do and a few of them carry Glocks. What's nice about that is we can train together and interchange parts, mags, etc and they can help me get more familiarized with the pistol if I have questions.

After checking out prices on cartridges I think it's a reasonable deal for a starter multi-purpose gun. I will have trouble carrying for awhile but it's size will be a nice weapon for the home as well as possibly carrying in the future. Also I've noticed firearms keep there values really well and so it would be a good investment.


Side note.
Someone stated something about retention and I friend sent me this article that might be of interest. It's an officer but it could be anyone really. I preferably like carrying a knife and flashlight on me. A knife is always active and I don't have to worry if it's loaded or will misfire, etc.

glocks come with 2 mags and i think i bought mine for 485 new. ammo isnt that much but i agree you should see if she will go any lower, glocks really are a dime a dozen. i do love mine though, so its definitely worth the consideration. the 19 is a good first gun.

does anyone know if the taurus 24/7 is a decent gun or not? I saw one the other day in what looked like good condition (it's used) for $300. one, is that a fair price, and two would i regret owning a taurus? I really don't know too much about the brand except that it's made in brazil and half of their guns look like berettas...

I have a taurus pt745 and i have no complaints, seems to be a good gun

(i will admit, i have only shot 50 rounds through it, but with zero failures to fire or eject)

i have the 24/7 in 9mm

i love it- the only thing that one could complain about is that the trigger pull is a little long compared to other composite pistols (like the MP or XD)



I use it as my daily CC


as for price, assuming it is in good condition, that is a pretty good price (just check for wear and tear on it- see if you can get a read on how many rounds have been put through it)

also, a technicality issue- I know it is helluva illegal to carry on campus... but when driving through campus (ie: dan allen and pullen)- is that illegal? If I CC over in cameron village, do I need to find a back way home other than going through campus?

Biofreak70- Gorman, Hillsborough, Western, and Pullen should all be fair game. Campus is not on both sides of the street there. You can not drive on Dan Allen when carrying

I am looking to purchase my first gun. Anyone recommend the Taurus 24/7 Pro Compact? I can get it wholesale price. The advice on this page above suggests that it is a decent pistol. Things I am looking for in a firearm:
* compact/concealable
* lightweight
* 10+ shots
* larger caliber, .38-.45
* rubber grip (not polymer)
* less than 400 bones
* somewhat range accurate

Taurus guns are good quality in my experience, but I will warn you this - if you break something, you are fuxxored beyond belief. I've been waiting nearly 6 months for a $3 part in my 24/7 that someone else broke when I loaned it out (last time I do that).

Luckily, the damage to the part only keeps it from operating in DA mode. SA works fine, so it's g2g for range work until I (eventually) get the part.

It's a part common to every single PT-series pistol, but I've called them once a month since September, and every single time I'm told it's on backorder.

That said, I just sold a PT111 with over a thousand rounds through it, and it has functioned flawlessly the whole time, so they're solid if you take care of them.

If I had it all to do again, I would have gotten something like a Glock, Springer, S&W, etc. that's easy to work on and find parts and accessories for in the first place. Mags for those are also cheaper, and in the end, you'll be much more satisfied with it knowing that service isn't a concern.

If you absolutely cannot afford anything better and you need a gun right NOW, buy a Taurus. If you can afford to save up an extra hundred bucks and get something with better service, do it.

^^ I assume you have fired handguns before? A compact will magnify any mistakes in your grip, pull, anticipation, not the best to learn on unless you've got an experienced friend to help.

Kel-tec P11 you can probably get under $300, it's a very compact 10+1 9mm

I've read many stories about how crappy Taurus' customer service is.

Taurus turns out pretty good products, but like every manufacturer some guns have flaws or parts break. The thing is S&W, Springfield, Ruger, Glock, Sig, etc will take good care of you. Buying a Taurus is a little bit of a gamble.

^I agree with that too. You shouldn't buy a sub compact unless you really need it to be small. A full size or compact/medium size gun is so much easier to shoot well.

You'd be hard pressed to find a rubber grip. The Taurus might be the only one unless you add a slip on over grip or aftermarket grip panels to another pistol.

I never understood why people like rubber grips. I hate them...but do keep in mind that you don't have to limit yourself to guns with rubber from the factory. There are all sorts of accessories for most guns, so you can modify whatever you buy to help fit you better.

So I just bought the Glenwood Ave and Cary Walmart out of thier .40, .357sig, and 9mm ammo.

All I got was:
200 rounds 9mm
200 rounds .40
50 rounds .357
what is funny is that will only last me 2-3 weeks.

And the dude behind the counter at the Glenwood walmart tried to talk me out of buying the .357sig. He said I really didn't want that ammo, and that I was mistaking. No clue what was going on there.

Wake County Range is the only public one here, afaik. There are some private facilities in the general area, but it's expensive and a general pain to get in unless you know someone.

Range One does allow large caliber, but frangible ammo only. No steel core ammo at all. $5 test fee and you pay by the hour. its a little much for a shitty range. no set up area at all.

I have the ranges out where my family still lives, great for shooting long guns. However I often pay for PDHSC range time if I want to shoot but do not want to make the drive. $17 or so for time and 2 targets is worth not making a 2 hour round trip if I want some handgun time. However, if I want to use my long guns any, its off to Nash county I go. Its fun to use steel core stuff on plate targets. The 7.62X39 golden bear i have is steel jacket, it just splashes, the yugo surplus 7.62X54 and the 'brown bear' 5.45X39 both leave nice punches in up to 3/8 plate, and the X54 makes nice splash marks on the 1.5 inch plates.

Looking to get a few guns in the near future. Critique my selections...

Pistol -- .45acp, either a Glock 21, 30, or a Springfield XD45. I know the Glocks are known to be very reliable, and I just read an interesting torture test on the XD45 so it looks comparable at least. Any suggestions? I've fired a G30 before but not a G21 or XD45, this is just my preliminary thinking from what I've read. Planning on getting CC permit at some point. I suppose I should also mention that I am looking at a Walther P22 as well, namely since .22 ammo is so cheap.

Shotgun -- Benelli Nova or Supernova, 12ga, synthetic.

Rifle -- Remington 700, not sure what model or scope (although I'm looking at it chambered in 30-06). I read a bit online about quality issues with the cheapest 700, so I am looking at the CDL. I would prefer something synthetic, though. I'm also thinking about a Ruger 10/22.

The OC dinners range from 6 to 10 people generally. In VA, they have 30 people a month, plus smaller weekly meets that are more local.
I personally hope that our monthly outings will grow to VA's proportions as the Raleigh meets are relatively new.



SCCC will be meeting Tuesday (10th) evening @ 7:30 at I love NY Pizza.
There are no signs, no alcohol served there, and not on campus so carry if you would like.
I will be OCing myself.
We will be discussing the Empty Holster event, and good responses to questions.
We always welcome new faces, as well as people who just have questions about concealed carry in general.
I will also be starting to draft paperwork so comments will be collected.

You will have to transfer the firearm through an FFL.
This will cost around $40 for most states.
