7/18/2007 6:23:33 PM
nice!i just cracked the top 5 (as of next update) but it won't be long lived that's for sure!
7/18/2007 8:28:44 PM
i wonder what happened to neodata? any word on those quad-cores fender?i hope to be back up to a measly 1000ppd within a week...not that its that much help
7/18/2007 8:37:23 PM
we need the boost, we are ALMOST to #99
7/18/2007 8:45:19 PM
I need to jump back into this soon
7/18/2007 8:48:22 PM
we could use the help
7/18/2007 9:16:07 PM
Unfortunately, the quad really isn't that fast I've been pretty disappointed - the C2D was doing ~1100, and the quad only does ~13-1400.I've also been experimenting with VMWare and it's been giving trouble where I've had to stop and restart it a lot. All in all folding hasn't been too awesome this week. I've got the C2D in another system now and I'm going to try to get it up and running soon.
7/18/2007 9:35:49 PM
I have just started using VMWare as well. I am used to virtualPC. I need some experience quick. It seems as of right now though that it hogs a lot more memory from the host then VPC... But I spent all day yesterday restarting my pc because I was getting familiar with VMWare.
7/18/2007 10:46:27 PM
#99, congrats team!
7/19/2007 1:35:41 PM
Ahhh sorry i'm going to reinstall the smp client tonight. I was on vacation for a week and i didn't leave it running. Should have 2 c2d machines up tonight. Both will hopefully get 1600ppd+. My apologies for the delay.
7/19/2007 3:34:07 PM
Alright up and running on both c2d machines now.
7/19/2007 5:58:52 PM
I'm running in multiple VM sessions on servers now.Woot.
7/19/2007 7:49:18 PM
98th currently! At least for a few days.
7/19/2007 10:37:56 PM
^^^ watch out, i'm gunna overtake in 1.4 years ^ sweetbtw, since the thread is tldr size, anyone ever thrown up flyers with flaps that have the website on them to recruit more NCSU members? if it was done, is it worth trying again this fall?[Edited on July 20, 2007 at 12:21 AM. Reason : img]
7/20/2007 12:19:43 AM
great idea!back to top 5 until scanZero passes me in a couple weeks
7/20/2007 12:40:05 AM
Got the quad and the C2D running...the C2D is on Linux, so I'm having to run 2 instances of the regular client. We'll see how that goes. Hopefully, if nothing crashes or has to be shutdown, then I'll be back to almost 3k per day.
7/20/2007 12:43:57 AM
Q6600 - $299http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017I'm sure it will get lower in the next couple weeks.
7/20/2007 8:38:48 PM
^there was one on slickdeals earlier today for 295
7/20/2007 8:48:51 PM
I'm not really impressed with the Q6600. It runs really hot for the mere ~200 extra PPD it gets over a C2D for folding, and I'm not going all out for any of the new games that actually utilize multiple threads. If some one really wants one, I'd sell mine for 250, or trade it in a heartbeat for an E6600 + 150 or so. It just seemed like it would be fun to try out and it just didn't turn out to be nearly as cool as I had expected.
7/20/2007 11:52:40 PM
^I'll trade it!
7/21/2007 9:57:10 PM
So, a couple days later, I think I spoke too soon. Having had it on without any restarts for about 3 days, It's giving me over 2k PPD. A hella lot better than the 1600 I thought I was getting. I renig and retract my bad review of the Q6600. [Edited on July 24, 2007 at 9:16 AM. Reason : I'm back in the red!!! w00t]
7/24/2007 9:07:41 AM
Nice. I wish i had gotten one earlier. My e6600 was 320$ when i bought it, and the Q6600 is only 299$ now. Damn prices. 99! Gotta move back up![Edited on July 24, 2007 at 9:49 AM. Reason : .]

^^ I've found that PPD per computer can fluctuate 200-400 points depending on what the fahclient decides to work on next after a completed WU. fahmon shows 1 machine getting 1.2k ppd on 1 project (2609) and then 1.6k ppd on another (2651).
7/24/2007 10:28:09 AM
So i have a problem. I installed the regular client as a service on 2 computers. They're just pentium 4's but i wanted the extra points. Whenever i run it not as a service it'll complete WUs just fine. When i try to run it as a service, and restart the computer, the fah core comes up and utilizes the entire cpu, but when i go to the .txt log the only thing it says is "core shutdown" or whatever from when i closed the console before restarting. Basically i don't think it's actually doing anything. Is there anything i'm not doing in regard to running it as a service?
7/24/2007 10:42:20 AM
are you sure youre looking at the right log? if the last thing you read is client shutdown i suspect youre readin the wrong log.i would use fahmon to watch the status of your clients, not read the logs.]

E6750 - 4MB Cache, 1333FSB - $199http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA24051 i love price drops... but i just got my E6600 for $230 in march
7/24/2007 7:21:41 PM
soon as core 2 duo's can put 3ghz in each cpu i'll get them
7/24/2007 9:46:12 PM
huh?
7/24/2007 9:55:57 PM
see core 2 duo's have 2 cpu's...well soon as they make each core 3ghz i'll buy them
7/24/2007 10:34:03 PM
E6850http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA24052
7/24/2007 11:08:43 PM
well i'll be damned...i cant even make shit up now a days
7/24/2007 11:18:09 PM
Shit, just get a 6750 or a 6600 and OC it to 3.0Ghz. It's a lot cheaper if that's all you want.
7/25/2007 12:19:04 PM
I watched that video again that Prospero posted. The lady says ps3s are "20 times faster" for folding than pcs. How does that work? How may ppd do ps3s get again?
7/25/2007 8:05:52 PM
around 800-900 i think
7/25/2007 9:25:02 PM
^That lady lied to me. I'm back in the top producers! I need to get more than 1 c2d smp client going though.
7/25/2007 9:26:11 PM
^ they used to be badass...now not quite as much that C2D+ is on the scene. still good producers tho.welcome back
7/25/2007 10:01:30 PM
I'm back folding again as well, should have a few more machines running the SMP client in a day or two.
7/25/2007 10:05:57 PM
^I'm new to folding, what's the code to display that info bar? Or how do you do it?
7/25/2007 10:07:00 PM
Just click edit post on that one to see, it's very simple....IIRC Prospero maintains the site but I'm not positive, been away for a while.
7/25/2007 10:10:22 PM
Sweeet. Thanks. [Edited on July 25, 2007 at 10:11 PM. Reason : .]

^^^^ welcome back! we could definately use some more SMP clients
7/26/2007 12:16:28 AM
hell yeah...went from about 207 to 141 rank...my parents must have forgot it turns on everytime they restart the computer

7/26/2007 1:43:20 AM
so here's a question.seeing as I'm likely going to get a Quad core intel chip for my next machine, how would I best take advantage of it for folding? Also, can i just run it on one core and specify the core to run on?
7/26/2007 3:43:43 AM
yes, but you have to do it manually via task manager (set affinity), unfortunately when you launch the SMP client it just goes ahead and launces four processes, so you'd have to set all of them to the same core
7/26/2007 5:24:25 AM
^^ there are some freeware apps to set affinity via command line, but I've never used any of them. the smp client has the best points per wu, but those wus can have a deadline of of 4 days or less. so running the smp client on 1 core might not turn it around fast enough (not sure on that, worth trying out). otherwise using the normal client and allowing large work units will turn around about 500-600 points per work unit and their deadlines are months or more. glad to see you and hobbit are back [Edited on July 26, 2007 at 11:24 AM. Reason : .]
7/26/2007 11:22:05 AM
^^^Yeah the Q6600 are rather cheap now. You just don't want fah to run on all 4 cores? What i usually do is just shut the smp console down if i'm doing something that requires processing power. Gaming really is the only thing i shut it down for. Doing anything else works fine while running the smp console. ^But yeah if you don't want to run the full smp client you should just run the normal client as a service, and it'll probably get just as much work done as if you ran the smp on a single core. Just a guess though. These guys know way more about it then i. [Edited on July 26, 2007 at 11:43 AM. Reason : ..]
7/26/2007 11:42:17 AM
nah, i almost always used my asleep times for rendering unfortunately. it would be more of a during the day while im sitting here type thing
7/26/2007 12:17:37 PM
^what type of rendering?
7/26/2007 1:51:40 PM
i don't think you need more than one core for typing [Edited on July 26, 2007 at 3:24 PM. Reason : .]
