Sometimes the supplementals on any movie are more often than not going to be 1080i, regardless of the format being HD DVD or Blu-ray. It's pretty much unheard-of to present your main event 1080i on a next-generation format...
1/14/2008 1:23:44 AM
^^don't take it so personal, I'm just (still) wondering what movie you're talking about. It's already been established that Pirates 3 is 1080p.

so apparently Fox got $120mil for switching over to BR, which then caused Warner to go BRalso, Warner got about $400mil once it switched[Edited on January 15, 2008 at 8:21 AM. Reason : D?]

You'd have to be an idiot to believe that some sort of payout wasn't involved. But you'd be even stupider to think that Toshiba didn't make a similar offer. At the end of the day, if this thing was nothing but a bidding war, I can't see how Blu-ray could have possibly been the one to win it. There were many more factors involved than just money.

if we can get another $99.99 deal, count me in $100 for HD now (i only have a 720p screen anyway) and guaranteed cheaper (and better) blu-ray later seems like a win
1/16/2008 2:43:24 PM
you gotta feel bad for anyone that buys an HD DVD player at this point. Even if they are getting a 'good deal'.(technophiles who know what they are getting themselves into excluded)[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 2:47 PM. Reason : ds]
1/16/2008 2:47:09 PM
really? if i could get an hd-dvd player and 5 hd-dvds for $100, i'd be happy with that...i don't own many movies, so $20/movie isn't bad when the player's included*shrug*
1/16/2008 2:55:38 PM
no really, it's over. move on.
1/16/2008 3:25:15 PM
^^you would fall into the category of "knows what they're getting themselves into".And that's fine. It's not a bad deal by any means. I just feel bad for joe schmoe who thinks he's getting a deal, only to realize later that he needs to buy a blu-ray player to watch most of the movies he wants to watch.
1/16/2008 3:27:11 PM
^^i'm sure you know better than Toshiba. But they don't seem to think so. Perhaps you should save them the trouble of this marketing strategy and email them your input so they can shut down production of HD DVD immediately.so lets break this down. HD DVD is cheaper and has all the features of BD 2.0 that isn't out yet. Interesting.[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 3:30 PM. Reason : .]

^i see what you're trying to do, but are there any movies out currently that can't be stored on an hd dvd as opposed to blu-ray? it's a serious question, not trying to put fuel on the fire.
1/16/2008 3:48:22 PM
no, but studios are free to make better encodes and/or add more features with more storage to play with. There have been some recent Blu-Ray exclusives with average bitrates in the mid/upper 40's. And they look stellar.for example: a movie I'm looking forward to, Amadeus. This is a Warner release. Back in the dual format days, they have to make the movie fit on 30GB unless they want to encode it twice (which they never did). Since it's a long movie, the picture quality would've suffered. Hopefully they re-encode it for Blu-Ray before putting it out.[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 3:51 PM. Reason : j]

1/16/2008 3:53:49 PM
yeah, we've already discussed that. Not a single movie is currently pressed on that disc, and probably never will (the way things are going right now, anyway). If HD DVD made the jump to triple layer, so would Blu-Ray. And the storage gap grows exponentially with each iteration.
1/16/2008 3:56:38 PM
^^This thread died two weeks ago, when HD DVD lost.
1/16/2008 3:58:25 PM
are as many blu-ray users using the online features of blu-ray as they are hd? that seems like a good indicator of adoption to me and even if blu-ray has more storage, a well planned release can have online features with "limitless" storage. i assume that applies to blu-ray as well...i would think it has the ability to access online content (i'm not 100% though).^edit the image out[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 4:01 PM. 1/16/2008 4:01:25 PM
^we won't know until blu ray has the ability to have online features.

the only time i've put the 2nd disc in for any movie was Lord Of The Rings extended edition. Because watching a movie halfway would suck.
