^ DAMN. I've been lusting over that chip for a while.let us know what kind of PPD you're getting out of it once its up and running!
7/6/2007 3:43:33 PM
i saw they came down to $299 w/ motherboard, pretty good deal for quad, 'cept next month the quads with 1333mhz fsb will come out i can't wait to see the numbers for the C2Q![Edited on July 6, 2007 at 4:59 PM. Reason : .]

^august maybe? that's when the next gen quad's hit the market, i suspect the Q6600 will drop then
7/7/2007 12:32:48 AM
^ AMD has been pushing back the dates on the release of the quad-core CPUs...I hope they do actually come out in August. It sounds like the Intel variety can get over 3K PPD so I'm looking forward to the price dropping some
7/7/2007 12:38:34 AM
how can it get 3000 ppd? like a quad core running 4 instances of the console client?how much should an smp client be getting?
7/7/2007 12:55:50 AM
^ Depends on the work unit core, but according to fahmon, my SMP clients are churning 2.9k PPD on average. They are 2cpu/2core machines and they are a mix of AMD and Intel. [Edited on July 7, 2007 at 12:46 PM. Reason : .]

^ Opterons and Xeons, don't remember the specific models atm.
7/7/2007 12:52:39 PM
^Server proc's - they're optimized for multithreading, so that doesn't surprise me. The Core 2 Quad was only $300 from fry's on the 4th, but the deal lasted for less than an hour. It was kind of an impulse buy sort of thing, but rumor has it that they'll come down to around $250 later this month, so the rest of you who have been looking at one have a chance to get it for a pretty reasonable price.
7/7/2007 3:48:13 PM
is there a site that details all these "rumor has it" type things?
7/7/2007 4:08:17 PM
so what does a single SMP client get running on a dual core athlon, 3800+ to be specific , with two console clients I usually get between 200 and 250 ppd. Should I switch it up? I read on the wiki that the smp is really designed for quad cores.I'm so close to breaking into the top 100, I really want to do all I can for the team.
7/7/2007 7:44:18 PM
http://fahinfo.org/i suspect youll get more points with the smp
7/7/2007 8:44:14 PM
^^I've got a X2 3600+ that gets ~500-700, so yeah, you can do better with the SMP.

I should have the Core 2 Quad in by the end of this week, AND the C2D will be running in another system. The roommate also got a Quad, and both of ours should be running ~Friday. Look for a big boost this weekend.

good you'll let me get in the top 5 for a week then
7/11/2007 3:36:37 PM
At my current pace, I will fall out of the top 5 in less than a year. As far as I am concerned, that is good news that we have some new blood on the team. I wonder if NeoEraser will climb again when school starts back up?---
7/11/2007 6:17:11 PM
I didn't think NeoEraser's production was dependant on school sessions...i'm pretty sure those particular points aren't ever coming back.

Q6600 is in and it's a real burner...I'm not going to be folding on it until I can find a better cooling solution. It idles around 39-40C on stock air cooling, under full folding load it shoots to 69C! This is with no overclocking. OC'ed to 2.6 it idles at almost 45C.Any suggestions on good air cooling? I see that the Tuniq Tower 120 is a favorite of OC'ers as well as the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, but both are really pricey, which doesn't look too appealing after spending $300 on a proc.http://www.tuniq.com.tw/Cooler%20Info/Tower-120.htm Tuniqhttp://www.thermalright.com/a_page/main_product_ultra120_extreme.htm Thermalright
7/12/2007 2:01:22 AM
seems like alot of the newer procs run hot as hell with the stock coolers, forcing you to buy another one. its almost like printers not coming with usb cables...
7/12/2007 9:00:52 AM
Well, I shut it off for the night, gave it a rest and now I've been folding with it for about half an hour this morning and it's sitting around 60-61, which isn't too bad I guess. I'm gonna leave it running for the day and see how it handles it, and if it fares well and doesn't go above that, I'll leave it on to fold.FAHmon isn't reporting any higher PPD's with it, but I guess I'll wait until it starts a fresh WU and see what it says it's doing. This one had about a third of this one done on the C2D before I switched them. Right now it's taking ~10 minutes between a percentage, where the old C2D took ~18. That works out to roughly 16 hours per WU, so it's definitely an improvement over the old one which took a little over a day to finish one.
7/12/2007 11:21:03 AM
^^^either of those are good, including any of the Zalman 9500/9700 cpu coolers or Scythe coolers... also be sure to use arctic silver and give it a couple power on/off cycles to establish more accurate temp readings.you're looking at $45-60 unless you go with a smaller 92mm Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro ($25) which helps cool my OC'd E6600 fine, i'm not sure if it'd be enough for a Q6600another thought (coming from research on the stock E6xxx cooler) is that a lot of people reported the stock HSF to have a concave surface on the heatsink, to save money you could try lapping the stock heatsink and try that... just a thought[Edited on July 12, 2007 at 11:56 AM. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/235616-29-finished-lapping-q6600-with-pics-resultsDid some research on lapping the heatsink and came across this as well - it's a guide to lapping the heatspreader on the chip, and from a couple examples on this site, it seems to make a pretty significant difference in temps - much more so than the heatsink lap, though I'll definitely try that first.
7/12/2007 2:01:10 PM
all depends on whether or not you want a warranty, that's the only reason i didn't suggest lapping the cpu as well... it's up to you... i'd be interested in your findings as well
7/12/2007 2:07:27 PM
