^Agreed. Honestly, when you look back, Democrats have been losing at every level except the Presidency over the past 6 years. Step one is working at the state and local level to undo gerrymandering and then work their way up from there.

^^That and the fact they didn't listen to the people and actively colluded to ensure that Hillary was the candidate. Berniecrats were just considered sexist rather than acknowledging the grievance campaign (much of it from income inequality) and listen to the people.

Reince Priebus was under pressure to change the rules at the Republican convention to make sure anybody but Trump was chosen as the Republican candidate. He let the will of the people ride and like it or not, the people turned out and they just won. I think it would have been a whole other ballgame if it had been Trump vs. Sanders. This morning I wonder who is more stunned, the Democrats who were all but certain this was in the bag for Hillary, or the Republicans who knew that this wackjob would run his course, go down in flames and then rebuild the party from the ashes. Instead they are in charge of it all?!?

the system was biased against him, but it wasn't rigged against him. clinton came in with a major advantage and he entered the race late and took awhile to get serious.

i think theproblem is that they seemed to ignore all of the faults that should have been lessons from the primary

I at least felt like his acceptance speech went well enough. I hope maybe now that he has won he can at least keep that line of thinking going and be less divisive and cool it with the hateful speech.

Also I felt it was very telling that Clinton didnt even bother acknowledging all the people who showed up to support her. Even if she had just said its been a long night thanks for coming out I am collecting my thoughts and will give my concession speech in the morning she should have at least taken a few minutes to talk with her supporters.

Whatever medicine they have had him on for the past couple of weeks I wish they would make it permanent. If he keeps this up and drops his election rhetoric maybe he could actually be a decent president? Optimistic I know.

And I agree, I did think that was rather petty of her. I understand she had to feel gutted, but at least go out and acknowledge those folks. They sat around all evening and were frequently caught crying on international TV and she didn't even come out and at least make a quick appearance. I wonder if she had not even prepared a concession speech?

This shit is the fault of you and your ilk, I hope that you realize it and feel like shit"

While parts of this are correct (yes, this was about as big of a wake up call to democrats as they come), telling people who didn't vote for Trump that it's their fault that he won is bullshit. He lost the popular vote.

There's enough blame to go around for everyone (Dems for picking a shitty candidate, Republicans for not preventing him from winning, etc) and you sitting on your high and mighty horse accomplishes nothing. People who voted for Trump did so for a variety reasons, so they absolutely deserve the most blame, if we're going to sit around and have a arm chair quarterback pissing contest. I could bring up the fact that in states that were close, Johnson and Stein made up the difference, but that accomplishes nothing either.

Luckily for me, I live in CA and lots of awesome props passed. As other have said, change needs to start happening on a more local level. I expect to see a lot of catastrophic changes happening pretty damn soon (goodbye Obamacare, hello right wing SCOTUS appointment). Hopefully our country isn't completely in shambles by the time midterms roll around, since that's all that'll be left to stop him.

The real win in this election is all the referendums that passed. Open primaries, marijuana, campaign finance reform, education funding, etc.

that's PART of why she lost- not the main or only reason. She lost because the electoral college worked in Trump's favor (it was originally designed to protect slave owners FWIW), but mostly because the divide between rural, urban, and suburban America is much sharper than we've come to expect in presidential elections. I know a lot of people argue Bernie would have won, but the fact that Trump defied all expectations is far more telling than anything else. The "shy" Trump voter was very, very real.

and yep ^. I'm sitting pretty right now in CA. My job just got immensely safer.

^^^This election wasn't about policies and you know it. If it had been, Hillary would have won handily. Name a definitive policy position from Trump other than "build that wall" and "deport the illegals". You can't.

Kim Kardashian could win the presidency based on the precedent Trump just set. It's what America wants. Sometimes the simplest explanation, even one that defies logic, is the most accurate.

your "its what they want, look at the results" is pretty silly. if campaigns didn't impact results, no one would campaign.

Tired of having the same conversation over two threads, so I'm just gonna keep it here,

Quote :
"^^ how many times do you need to be told that voters don't act rationally, its entirely about what they think is reality"

Exactly lol. Basically the alternate reality created by Fox News, Breitbart, and Republicans about Obama's "failures" and Hillary's "scandals" prevailed. That also answers your other question of the main reason why she lost.

..

One glimmer of light: Cortez-Masto and Maggie Hassan both won their Senate races.

^^but its the democratic party's fault for leaving behind such a large demographic and letting the republicans capture them. that used to be the democratic base, but they gave it away.

i don't think its impossible to capture some of that demographic back, and I think the preliminary results are proof of that

You don't think Trump trashing the Clinton legacy of NAFTA in each debate and vowing to renegotiate NAFTA and swear off TPP didnt resonate as policy with the rust belt?

The chart is misleading, as it doesn't reveal trends over time. More affluent people have always been more likely to vote Republican. This election is the least Republican they have voted in a long time; similarly, this is the least Democrat that less affluent people have voted. A more viable Republican would have carried at least 55-60 percent of people earning over 100k/year, not less than half.

^^^^I agree with that, mostly because it's impossible to deny based on the election results. Look, at the end of the day, Trump's margin of victory in the electoral college came from 150,000 votes spread across 3 states. That's not an impossible hill the climb.

"Republicans for not preventing him from winning"

I've seen this come up on a couple occasions. Other than rigging the primary (which is really just a Democrat tactic), how were the republicans supposed to stop Trump from winning the nomination? He had a message that was different from any other candidate and got the most votes.

Hypothetical question, not expecting an answer because you (and all other D.'s) should be focusing inwardly right now.

I'm sorry that you're unwilling to accept the unsettling truth that in this election, almost half of the electorate didn't care at all about policy or the truth. They wanted a bombastic billionaire reality TV show host to win. Instead of blaming an entire political party, maybe you should work on accepting how fucked up America really is.

First of all the johnson voters are conservative and would have only pulled from trump. second of all, stein didn't get enough votes to make a difference in any state.

Trump would have won by more if it was a 2-way race.

Trump won because democratic voters have no principle so don't blame the 3% of the country who actually voted with integrity.

I'm seeing 2 types of trump supporters on Facebook. 1 that thinks he's a business genius and giving money to coal companies and corporations will create immense job growth, and the other who didn't like trump but thinks Hillary was an evil criminal.

I'll dig into the internals of these numbers over the next few days because I'm a liberal elite who gets paid to do nothing all day, but on it's face it looks like Trump didn't really turnout huge amounts of previously unreliable voters for him. He ran up his margins in rural/exurban areas because the D voters who do live there just didn't bother to show up for Hillary.

Anyone with half a brain should be offended that a politician thinks their support matters. Peoples' lives are at stake and you think we're going to listen to katy perry tell us who to vote for? Colorado (9), Florida (29), Maine (4), Michigan (16), Minnesota (10), Nevada (6), New Hampshire (4), New Mexico (5), Pennsylvania (20), Utah (6), Wisconsin (10)

That's 11 states and 119 total electoral votes that were awarded to a candidate who received less than 50% of the votes within that state.

That's 22% of the electoral college going to candidates when most people voted for somebody else.

The Dems get to take a licking for the next 4 years. If they're fortunate, they'll use this to galvanize their base and do better in 2020.

I guess I'd rather have 4 years of Trump than 8 years of Hillary - this at least speeds up the infusion of fresh blood the next go-round. Granted, if I was going to get 4 years of Trump, it would have been nice to have a Democratic Senate with him to keep things from getting too out of hand. Ah well, thems the breaks.

^ that's the sad/funny thing about trump. He has no allegiances. He's stabbed his family and business partners in the back his entire life-- it's literally his MO, and he's not shy about it.

His transition team is made of establishment politicians and elites from banking and finance and military-industrial complex. If we judge him based on that, he's going to run the country like a neocon.

But he could just as easily go rogue and stab his own team in the back too. We just have to wait and see at this point.
