there's probably a better thread for this somewhere, since it's neither downtown nor revitalization, but a quick search didn't reveal ithttp://www.wral.com/fond-memories-of-raleigh-s-old-party-scene-hidden-below-cameron-village-/12682951/

Public meeting on parklets tomorrow:http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/NCRALEIGH/bulletins/84b50b#I thought the idea was really stupid until I saw it applied well in SF.
7/24/2013 5:01:13 PM
It's a fantastic idea that can really enhance urban space when done well.
7/24/2013 5:11:06 PM
Yeah I like the ones in SF.And theyre good places for food trucks to park so all those all goombas can get their rocks off for that aspect.
7/24/2013 5:29:02 PM
Again with the food trucks?
7/24/2013 5:59:16 PM
No one cares troll, go away

I had to look up what a parklet was. looks like the dumbest fucking thing. i'm sure they'll find a way to drop a metric shit ton of money on some glorified benches and potted plants[Edited on July 24, 2013 at 10:42 PM. Reason : way to picture-fuck the page smath]
7/24/2013 10:38:48 PM
you must have a tiny monitor.
7/24/2013 10:42:47 PM
yes but i make up for it with firefox image zoom ftw
7/24/2013 10:44:31 PM
^^^ They? It's privately funded. If a restaurant wants more outdoor seating they pay the city $12/day to rent a parking space and put their shit there.
7/24/2013 11:36:30 PM
Can food trucks or bicyclists rent a parking space too?
7/24/2013 11:45:56 PM
^^ where do you see that it's privately funded? serious question.or are you basing that on the assumption that they are privately funded in those other cities, so it must be so here as well.
7/24/2013 11:53:19 PM
That's how it works everywhere. Where do you see that it will function differently here?
7/25/2013 12:03:51 AM
It's definitely not privately funded everywhere and I don't know that it would be in Raleigh. They are usually pretty cheap to install, though (often cheaper than the cost of the parking space they replace). Some good info on San Francisco's parklet program can be found here, including cost (theirs are privately funded): http://www.peoplepoweredmovement.org/site/images/uploads/ParkletDetailedFAQ.pdf[Edited on July 25, 2013 at 12:18 AM. 7/25/2013 12:17:51 AM
Where is it not privately funded?
7/25/2013 12:30:58 AM
How is this cheaper to implement than a parking space. Its a fucking parking space. Plus these things are supposed to be removable for situations that call for it.
7/25/2013 2:33:19 AM
cheaper than the cost to remove and repave
7/25/2013 7:21:12 AM
which has to be done, what, every 20 years? come now
7/25/2013 9:42:18 AM
Boston funded its first parklets, though it wants to get private sponsorship for any future ones. New York City DOT publicly funds many street conversions that are similar to parklets, though I'm not sure that they would actually fall under that definition. A few smaller towns here in New Jersey have publicly funded parklets, though I think ultimately the goal is to get businesses and non-profits to sponsor them. I wouldn't be surprised if Raleigh gets things started with one or two sponsored by the city to get the ball rolling, but they might already have sponsors lined up (like they did with the bike corral in front of Raleigh Times). As for the parking space comment, the average cost of a surface level parking space is anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 per space. A parklet is often as simple as a raised platform with some tables and chairs and maybe a planter or two on it.[Edited on July 25, 2013 at 10:11 AM. Reason : .]
7/25/2013 10:10:48 AM
These would be a better investment.Local businesses would lobby against them, however. "Bathrooms are the only reason people come into our store!"
7/25/2013 10:29:51 AM
the only thing I'm not clear about is what districts this would be for? streetscape standards for the downtown district already allow room for sidewalk seating space.

I need to ride by there, but for anyone who knows the warehouse district area....is crank arm in the old White Collar crime space? or was there another space adjacent to that building that they improved?
7/25/2013 1:13:43 PM
Yes, old White Collar space.
7/25/2013 1:31:01 PM
story on the news said parklets would be paid for by person applying for it, not public money
7/25/2013 8:24:32 PM
It can be implemented either way, depends on the "market"Parklets and other little individualistic streetscape projects are essential to place-making, which is incredibly important for a city like Raleigh whose downtown is still coming into its ownhttp://www.pps.org/reference/what_is_placemaking/
7/25/2013 9:09:40 PM
Crank Arm Brewery is open in the Warehouse District

I had not been downtown in Raleigh in a while (I've driven through, but not walked around) and so my wife and I went there this weekend and walked Fayetteville Street and went to one of the kids museums (we have two little girls). I was impressed. Fayetteville St is nice and the whole vibe downtown was great. So much nicer than when I was at State. We ate at Cafe Luna as we held our wedding rehearsal dinner there. Still a great place to eat IMO.[Edited on July 31, 2013 at 9:35 AM. Reason : s]

^aside from patio seating restaurants in raleigh tend to be busier in the colder months as less people vacation as well as holiday parties

thanks for the tip.

Crank Arm is pretty good. nothing earth shattering.I did like the fact that they give half-dollar coins as change

how tall does a new building have to be to satisfy these silly people that judge every project by its height?
7/31/2013 8:43:24 PM
Tall enough to see it as they are driving from Carter-Finley to their house on the beltline
8/1/2013 1:46:41 AM
^^I'd be down with a 600 ft tall building to be the downtown centerpiece/tentpole.

^^ hahah, exactly
