Panthers reportedly over the cap (though only by $1M)
8/3/2011 3:07:28 PM
they can be over the cap if they choose, not sure by how much, but i think maybe until 2013?Edit: there is a one year exception of being up to $3 million over the cap[Edited on August 3, 2011 at 3:09 PM. Reason : .]

Oh, ok[Edited on August 3, 2011 at 3:10 PM. Reason : 2]

so who's the best WR we can get for $2mil this year?or a $1mil WR and a $1mil CB[Edited on August 3, 2011 at 3:16 PM. Reason : .]
8/3/2011 3:15:38 PM
so who's the best WR CB we can get for $2mil this year?
8/3/2011 3:16:52 PM
Maybe Deon Grant, but he is a strong safety
8/3/2011 4:05:48 PM
Chris Carr from Baltimore possibly.
8/3/2011 4:56:41 PM
pretty sure he re-signed with the Ravens
8/3/2011 5:36:26 PM
there was a teaser on wfnz about restructuring kalil's contract to get asante samuel. anyone hear that?
8/3/2011 5:40:59 PM
Like Hurney could pull that off. He probably doesn't even know what restructure means.
8/3/2011 6:32:41 PM
^^they weren't saying we were restructuring to pull in Samuels...they said "WE CANT AFFORD ANYONE. WE ARE ALREADY HAVING TO RESTRUCTURE PEOPLE BECAUSE WE ARE $1M OVER THE CAP"
8/3/2011 6:37:28 PM
you can be what, $3M over the cap this year and apply it against next year's cap or something?and the 99% of cap is what the teams as a whole have to spend, not each individual team, and money like Johnson's $30M bonus went towards that 99%
8/3/2011 6:56:19 PM
there are no salary floors until 2013also, has Kalil signed his franchise tender? it would make sense to lock him up long term to knock his salary down by about $4-6 million for this season
8/3/2011 7:32:06 PM
^^^ so what did they have to say about samuel?
8/3/2011 7:45:11 PM
8/3/2011 7:57:09 PM

Jason LaCanfora tweeted the following a few minutes ago:
8/4/2011 9:25:06 AM
Seems kinda strange? Isn't Moss just like a poor man's Steve Smith? Give me a big guy if were going to sign another WR
8/4/2011 10:31:01 AM
yeah i wouldn't have been a huge fan of that move
8/4/2011 10:38:01 AM
dont think he's worth $5 mil a year anyway
8/4/2011 10:39:47 AM
aren't his hands suspect?
8/4/2011 10:41:14 AM
Can we even afford to add Floyd at this point? I would love to have a proven tall WR to help take some coverage off of Steve Smith, but we're already over the cap by about a million. Guess we'll have to figure out Kalil's contract and get that franchise tag removed.
8/4/2011 10:43:19 AM
Yeah, only 9 receivers currently make more than that, Smith included.[Edited on August 4, 2011 at 10:47 AM. Reason : x]
8/4/2011 10:46:01 AM
being over the cap by $1 million is nothing at this point. We could shave that amount to almost nothing with all of the cuts we'll make between now and opening day.
8/4/2011 11:14:51 AM
BTW, if Shockey makes the team, we owe him nearly 4 mil. If we cut him, only 1 mil.Food for thought with Olsen, Hartsock and Barnbridge in the fold.[Edited on August 4, 2011 at 11:21 AM. Reason : It comes in the form of a $3 million salary and $812,500 roster bonus for making the Week 1 roster. ]
8/4/2011 11:19:47 AM
Schefter tweeted this morning that there are 5 teams currently over the cap, and the Panthers are not one of them.Adam Schefter:As of this morning, there are five teams over the salary cap: OAK $15.25 mil; PITT $8.5m; DET $7.8m; DALLAS $6.7m: HOUSTON $3.25m. How do Jackson & Austin end up on that list?
8/4/2011 11:30:57 AM
Good agents
8/4/2011 11:32:49 AM
meanwhile Andre Johnson isn't in top 5 paid
8/4/2011 11:34:24 AM
Talent is rarely indicative of compensation
8/4/2011 11:39:22 AM
haha "which one is not like the others?"

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/04/jerricho-cotchery-its-time-to-move-on-from-jets/How about Cotchery (what's he make now anyway)?
8/4/2011 12:52:06 PM
If were looking at any FA receiver, I'd prefer the other Steve Smith. But he's out till October, and it would probably too confusing anyway.
8/4/2011 1:10:19 PM
No wonder CJ is pissed. Those are fucking slave wages.
8/4/2011 1:10:56 PM
^^^ would be a good plan I think, he's maybe a poor mans Mohammed with a little more speed, good compliment to smith's skill set.
8/4/2011 1:13:05 PM
I really don't think we need another big name receiver. Its not like Newton is going to be throwing 50 passes a game. Between Olsen, Smith, Gettis, Lafell, and some passes to the running backs, I think thats plenty for this year. I'd rather spend any available dollars on the defensive side of the ball. We have to face three top 10 QB's two time each every year.
8/4/2011 1:17:10 PM
^Sure it depends on the price but none of the wr's other than smith would even be a #2 option on 90% of other teamsIf we were looking for a #3 I'd completely agree but smith has been getting killed lately cause there are no other real legit threats and the hands on several of those guys are questionable.
8/4/2011 1:19:29 PM
Edwards supposedly looking pretty good also
8/4/2011 1:23:37 PM
^^that won't be the same with a legit route running TE, 2 healthy pass catching RBs, and a mobile quarterback. They defense won't have a chance to stack the line or double up on Smith. Gettis showed a lot of promise and Lafell has a lot of size. I expect both to be much more involved this season.I would totally support Cotchery as a Panther, but i agree with Slave we need to write our last check on the defensive side of the ball.
8/4/2011 1:31:23 PM
when their powers combine...they create.....178
8/4/2011 1:35:09 PM
True enough about the TE angle but I just don't see it on the other WRs.The secondary could definitely stand to get shored up on defense though.
