Can't hold a lead in the 3rd. Teams start to get desperate and we tighten up. A good offense can be a great defense if done right.

^^ only a dagger if it dooms us to 8th. A first round series against Philly = probably a sweep, whereas a first round series against Tampa = at the very least competitive (imo)

Also, apparently page

Hopefully that doesn't fail

Season dagger? We still got a point. If we lost in regulation that would hurt, but even that wouldnt be a dagger.

We have to fixed our defense

its not a dagger, but it just seems like time and time again this team seems to be on the cusp of a big win and lets chances to assert its way up the eastern standings slip away with late goals/OT/shootout losses.

Incredibly frustrating loss

But not a season dagger.

We get in the playoffs, whether it's 8th, 7th, or 5th. and who knows what the hell happens...

god damn the fucking shootout is bullshit.

canes absolutely without a doubt win that game in OT with 5 more minutes.

this just reminds me of 2002 where we had something like 8 straight ties

nonetheless, i think missing the playoffs this year wouldn't be hugely deflating considering expectations were pretty meager coming into the year. missing the postseason in 06-07 was inexcusable, but not this year.

and also fuck maurice. why do we have to go into a shell the second we take the lead? keep fucking playing instead of letting them skate around the zone and do whatever they want. i'm fine with it under 3, but ward is not gonna be able to make save after fucking save for 5 straight minutes.

odd stat:

I'm not sure if that is on Mo or what. Can't believe we couldn't get a clear there at the end, I was ready to lose my favorite hat on a Jussi empty netter.

Goddamn I'm sick and tired of us hanging Cam out to dry. It's absolutely ridiculous. Haven't been this frustrated after a game in a long time.

In past seasons, I'm all for jumping all over the team about it's inability to hold the lead.

This season? Last I checked this team was 19-0-0 when they entered the 3rd period leading. They had several chances to put the Rangers away late on odd man rushes and didn't bury them.

I'm not too broken up over this game. The Rangers lost Gaborik, now possibly Staal, and they have a rough schedule ahead. Just waiting to see what the trade we are preparing is going to be. Hopefully something of significance.

Really wish we'd get some D in front of Cam or for Mo to take a page from Lavi's '06 team and when you know you don't have the type of defense to go into a shell with a 3rd period lead - you keep the foot on the gas in the offensive zone. Still wish the OT was 10 minutes, hate the damn SO. If we can win Friday we pick up a possible 5 of 8 on this home stand.

Wonder what JR does before the deadline though - we have the type of young players/picks to net a top 4 defenseman or top 6 forward if we can extend their contract.

I dont know whats worse: sitting in front of someone that has virtually no knowledge of hockey that screams "shoooooot" for an entire power play and nearly anytime we bring the puck over the line, or sitting in front of someone that thinks they are a hockey expert because they've heard the term forecheck and wants to commentate the entire game and constantly talk about how worthless jokinen and corvo are and how they're our top 2 players to trade right now. I think I'm giving up defending canes fans.

OH LAWD

i wouldn't call yelling about third nipples "commentating"

in other news, people are saying that justin peters needs to play

how the hell are you going to give even one start to justin peters when cam ward just went 43/46 in his 20th straight start

right, and it was a back-to-back, and Cam gave up 3 early goals. I think he couldve used a break after the first period

coming in cold after two periods is not a start

might've been fine for cam, but it still doesn't give peters what people claim he needs

ryan miller finally got a night off after 31 starts in a row, but he's been shaky lately, even giving up 7 goals on a couple nights

cam has had a slow start here or there, but has been solid

i know keith primeau got chewed out by his mom for fighting his brother wayne in an NHL game

and the dryden family wasn't too pleased when a coach put dave dryden in the net just because his brother ken was playing at the other end

Its my opinion that Cam Ward is the ONLY reason we're not in the same straights as last season. Leave him in until further notice, please.

the only real time a goalie's going to turn down a start is when he's too sick to play, and even then he might still decide to go anyway (see gerber in the '06 finals)

there are apocryphal stories of goalies turning down starts because they didn't feel "right" and the other goalie having a stellar game, but who knows how much of that is spin for a coach's hunch

the fact is, a goalie wants to play every game. the nature of being a goalie in the first place dictates that you want the pressure and you want to play all the time. sure, when you've got a partner, you want him to do well because you want the team to win and you want a good relationship with your teammate.

deep down, though, you want him to screw up just enough that you get to go in and save the day. statistics will tell you that changing goalies mid-game only rarely results in a win, but a goalie stepping on the ice is fully convinced that he's going to stop everything...there's no other way to think.

FLA has traded forward Cory Stillman to CAR. Details to follow.

He was one of my favorite players when he was here. But sigh.

Well I guess we're consistent with what our team is named after as hurricane names are reused every 6 years or something like that. JR's just going with what we are!

Personally I like the move just so that in the last game we have left with Florida he can't put up a goal and 1+ assists against us. That in itself is worth Ryan Carter and a 5th if we get in the playoffs.

Where does everyone pencil in Stillman for his first game? Are we putting him on the 1st with Staal and Cole? Or will the never ending rotation keep going?

lol rutherford on 99.9:

In reference to Justin Williams (and previous jokes about reusing players): "I can't say much about other players, but he's unrestricted at the end of the year"
