Probably because he believes there is potential for the program to fall off a bit after K leaves

Thought he made that obvious

Yeah. I wish it had been true for UNC post-Smith but they've recovered well.

Duke is an elite private institution. Not just anyone is gonna win there. UNC could win 25 games a year with a loaf of bread as head coach.

you can say that for any coaching change, note unc for a few years post gut, indiana post-knight, ucla post-wooden. just sounded to me like he was grouping duke with those other schools insinuating that duke has never had any success pre-k. just wanted to clarify if thats really what he's saying

One in the modern era

And none one in his coaching tree has done anything. Who's up next? Amaker? Dawkins? Quinn Snyder?

so basketball history only counts if it happened in the last 20 years? it was a lot tougher to make a final four in 1963 than in 2003

How many top 100 guys know who Bill Foster is?

Great, but that has no bearing on continuing what K has built. And one Final Four run in 2020 or whatever doesn't mean that Duke won't have missed a beat with the next guy. Ask Mike Davis about that.

There is a 17 year relevance window with high school kids. I've said this thousands of times to people who keep harking on State's glory days, and I'll keep saying it to anyone who thinks anything a program has done before 1994 matters two squirts of piss to any prospective recruits.

just seems odd that state fans who want to cling so hard to the "importance" of two national championships in the distant past would denigrate the history of another school

I'm not saying that duke wouldnt skip a beat, I think they most certainly will

There are the SFN-type State fans and there are guys like me, who realize no one outside of Wake County gives a fuck about Norm Sloan and his ugly jacket. There are also guys like Slave who went to ECU.

^^^ Nobody realistic thinks NC State is relevant because of those NCAA Championships.

Quote :
" just wanted to clarify if thats really what he's saying"

Ok. After K and Boeheim leave their respective schools I expect that they'll have a drop from relevance. They may rebound, they may not. They may not even have a drop from relevance at all. Still, it's always a risk when you're changing coaches from a hall-of-famer to a new head coach.

Presumably Duke will be able to pay a lot of money to get a top coach in to replace K, but that doesn't always work either. I'm not saying it definitely will or won't happen, just that it's a possibility.

When the baby boomers die, so much is going to get fixed in the world.

This is why I think we'll win a NC finally the year that the last player from the 1974 or 1983 teams dies.

Do you think that reverting to a .613 win percentage post-K won't be a drop off? There's no way Duke fans will be satisfied with that. Hell, State fans wouldn't satisfied with that and we don't have near Duke's expectations.

I dunno. Most State fans I know are pretty content with a .666 win percentage. That's just over 29 games a season.

And to be honest that doesn't even matter. Personally I care way more about tourney performance.

lets not forget, its important to beat the schools in your neighborhood too.

noone wants to hear a bunch of shittalking at work from other schools' alums.

that shit may or may not be quantifiable, but it matters a lot.

Quote :
"NEW YORK – With the Mountain West and Conference USA losing at least five members to the Big East, those two leagues are now looking at an all-sports merger instead of a full-scale football expansion as originally planned, sources told CBSSports.com.

Conference USA and the Mountain West initially planned to combine into a separate football-only league with between 20 and 24 members and conducted an Oct. 15 press conference to announce the news. The winners from C-USA and the Mountain West would meet in a playoff with, they hoped, the winner earning a BCS bowl berth.

A BCS bowl berth, however, would have had to be approved by the BCS.

However, that plan has lost steam by the loss of Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU and UCF to the Big East. Instead, C-USA and the Mountain West are considering a merger in all sports. Sources have indicated that Craig Thompson, the current commissioner of the Mountain West, would become the commissioner of the new merged league, while Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky would step down.

A vote on the merger could come by next month, sources said.

The merged league would consist of: East Carolina, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB and UTEP from C-USA and Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV and Wyoming from the Mountain West along with new members Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada for a 17-team conference. Air Force was being sought after by the Big East, but the Gazette reported Tuesday evening that the Falcons would remain in the Mountain West.

After the initial merger announcement to as many as 24 schools on Oct. 15, Banowsky e-mailed officials at Conference USA and the Mountain West a week later about a proposed new conference, entitled “BCS and The Big East Expansion (An Alternative Plan).”

“Attached is a document that might find of interest regarding conference realignment,” Banowsky wrote on the e-mail, obtained by CBSSports.com.

That eight-page document presented two possible conferences mergers: one with 28 teams and another with 32 teams. They included all the Big East, Conference USA and Mountain West teams, plus a few other teams from other leagues. The plan was never endorsed by the Big East and didn’t get much further than being reported by various media outlets.

To combat the departures of the five schools, the Mountain West had decided to add San Jose State and Utah State. But adding those schools has now been put on hold, sources said."

Boston College is lucky they aren't in the MAC. One of the all-time bonehead decisions to invite them over Pitt/Syracuse/UConn.

LOL. Yeah, it sounds real familiar. Sounds exactly like what Texas is doing to the big 12, except Texas is probably 10x the monster that UNC is.

Eh, depends. Face value, it seems the ACC cares more about basketball than football given the moves it's made recently and Duke and UNC have equal cache (if not more) in that phase than Texas does in football...
