it did. It's basically a debate now of how long to wait until you buy a blu-ray player, which is a function of how much money you have, and how much you get a boner for new technology. If you just care about watching the movie, then any blu-ray player will do. If you like extra features, be sure to get a profile 1.1 player, such as the PS3. Or you can wait for BD-Live, which may or may not ever be anything worth using (my money is on the 'useless feature' option).

so are HDDVD discs gonna drop in price until they just phase out?
1/11/2008 2:23:45 PM
if they do indeed lose, a price drop is inevitable. i'll definitely strengthen my collection

i prefer hd as of now and i do think it's in the last run. i've already gotten my $500 worth for my two players and have about 30 hd dvds...if the price drops, it's a win win for me. i'll just build my collection and then add a ps3 eventually. hopefully by then, it will be worth buying for games alone and then i'll be happy.there's really no point for any hd dvd owner to panic though. worst case scenario you can scoop up some good movies for really cheap and still have a good player to use for hd dvds and for normal dvds.i don't think blu ray winning has anything to do with superior strategy from sony though.

any strategy that ensures success in the marketplace and secures profit for a company is a winning strategywhether or not the strategy is favorable to consumers does not determine its successthe tobacco industry is a classic example -- lots of winning strategies there, maybe not long-term, but they've made a lot of money
1/11/2008 4:32:04 PM
yes, but no one said anything about them not winning, because they have...what we have said, however, is that their strategy was not superior
1/11/2008 4:34:09 PM
so in what way was the red camp's strategy superior? if they lost, it was clearly inferior (from their perspective)
1/11/2008 4:36:06 PM
it ain't over yet. i don't care who or what wins, but until hddvd is not produced anymore i would not claim a win.
1/11/2008 4:43:01 PM
^move on, man. Its time now to put aside any past convictions, and push the merits of high def over standard DVD.
1/11/2008 5:08:20 PM
it's amazing how bullheaded some people are about this. It explains why everyone has been so MOODY about this subject lately, though.
1/11/2008 5:21:28 PM
^^ dude i am just thinking reasonably about this. no one has won anything yet. yes it looks like br will in fact win, yes it would not be wise to buy into the hddvd market, but until the fat lady sings, it ain't over. oh, and of course i would recommend getting a br player over a hddvd player now too, but there has not been a conclusion handed down as of yet.
1/11/2008 5:26:06 PM
I dont give a flying fuck which one wins, I just want all this bullshit to be over with already.
1/11/2008 5:39:57 PM
I'm just gonna wait until they come up with the next format and start selling IMAX films on a new type of disc. That would be freakin sweet.
1/11/2008 6:02:07 PM
they have IMAX movies on blu-ray/hd dvd?
1/11/2008 6:19:45 PM
No. That's I said I would wait. And I only half meant it....
1/11/2008 6:28:11 PM
Toshiba A3 (reg. $149) = $129.99[now THAT'S jumping ship]http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3304908&AffiliateID=.7WaaTN6umc-dxp8.OEy8zmPvNv4XD.gYQ
1/11/2008 7:39:05 PM
that's mainly because the a3 sucks and isn't 1080p...look at the a30 instead.
1/11/2008 9:56:27 PM
1/12/2008 1:07:00 AM
^^^^IMAX films are about 70 MP, so you might have to wait a while for technology to catch up.

^^ But they are not in IMAX format. That's all I'm sayin'.
1/12/2008 12:05:05 PM
Honestly, I think all we really want are 4-story tall movie screens in our living room. AMIRITE?!?
1/12/2008 12:21:49 PM
Actually, the format does not necessitate a 4 story screen. It simply has a much higher resolution (something around 10000 as opposed to 1080 lines).
1/12/2008 12:35:15 PM
wait for it...."the human eye cannot tell the difference on screens less than _______ so it really doesn't matter, i'll stick to my 720p tv..."
1/12/2008 1:15:50 PM
^ lol
1/12/2008 1:25:27 PM
hd dvd is dead...i found proof in my deliverance hd dvd...the insert sheet reads.
1/12/2008 2:15:06 PM
thats just a tactic to get you to thinking about buying br. genius.
1/12/2008 2:22:52 PM
I just went to the CD Warehouse, and apparantly a lot of people have been selling back their HD-DVDs. I was able to get transformers on HD DVD for 16 bucks.
1/12/2008 2:58:51 PM
^Foolish. Sell your stuff to a chump while it still has some value and put it towards something non-obsolete. What you're doing is like buying stock in a sinking company because its cheap. All those HD DVD movies are going to be re-released on Blu-ray eventually, and probably for only a few bucks more. [Edited on January 13, 2008 at 1:49 AM. Reason : .]
1/13/2008 1:43:43 AM
I have a vcr in a closet somewhere. Got rid of VHS tapes a long long time ago, though
1/13/2008 2:28:19 AM
1/13/2008 2:32:58 AM
^exactly. Circuit City has the Toshiba A3 now for $149 so i did the 110% price garuntee at BB to get some bucks back and i'll be keeping it. I can't wait to see some deals on HDDVD movies.
1/13/2008 10:43:24 AM
dude, i just copped my an a3 second hand yesterday within this fiasco, but only on the premises to get very cheap hddvd movies and have a head start on hd movies in general until i get a ps3 or a bluray player, then i will just make the br collection strong and enjoy both worlds.
1/13/2008 10:51:47 AM
whoever compared buying movies to stock is an absolute moron.last i checked you bought movies as a consumer good to be...ya know consumed.when you buy stock you buy an equity position in a company expecting both a share of profits and a return on investment when said company grows. The worst that comes out of people with HD players is that they can join in the firestorm of inventory reduction and enjoy high-def movies a fuck load cheaper than BR.
1/13/2008 11:45:53 AM
what are some good hddvd movies for 20 bucks?
1/13/2008 2:00:00 PM
1/13/2008 5:08:35 PM
off the top of my head pirates of the carribesn at worlds end.
1/13/2008 5:28:03 PM
^nope.http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news/show/1226
1/13/2008 5:29:58 PM
^^^^^I thought the logically applicable part of the analogy was evident.Well, you guys do whatever you want. But you're going to eventually either have two players hooked up to watch a movie, or have to hook up the HD DVD player whenever watching one. And you're not going to be able to get new movies for it. Its going to be a burden, and pointless to have around in a year when the movies you have become redundant. By then it will have no resale value. If you sell your existing player and movies, you don't have to deal with the inconvenience, and you'll have $ to put towards a blu-ray (which will not remain $400). If you have sense and patience, this is what you'll do. Don't fall for these naive-college-student deals because they're cheap and provide instant gratification.[Edited on January 13, 2008 at 5:46 PM. Reason : .]
