double dose to stave this hangover!

I had early onset coffee shits this morning. My bathroom was like a crime scene. My wife did not appreciate that.
12/10/2014 10:32:45 AM
Speaking of...One of the most disgusting and also painful events ever came to pass during said coffee Shit when the Shit water flew up and sprayed some area of my buttocks that was raw from chaffing(due to distance running). Had I been at work and not at home I would have feared the Shit water could have infected the area without the ability to shower. There is something satisfying Ab taking a dump that is so intense you literally have to shower afterward though.

I picked up a lightly used Saeco Via Venezia semiautomatic pressurized portafilter espresso machine from a thrift store on the cheap. Very happy with the find, and it works great. Something something pressurized portafilter is for coffee plebs something something. I will probably mod it some and play around with it.

picked up a bag of Counter Culture Buziraguhindwa at Whole Foods today.

need an airtight container. anyone recommend one?

Go to the Container Store, they have a few options. We have some gasket-ed stainless steel containers that seem to be airtight

So I received a burr grinder and a french press for Christmas, and have started looking around for some good whole beans to use.Any suggestions? I have a couple bags of Starbucks, but it all tastes mostly the same to me.

get those beans that birds shit out

Larrys Beans "Bolivia" roast are my favorite beans, but it depends on what kind of coffee you really like. These will give you a rich, flavorful, fruity/chocolate medium roast that perks you up.I don't recommend the Mr Coffee grinder you see at Target, it's too loud, and it shoots the grounds out horizontally against the container, so you have to work to scrape out the oilier grounds, and you can't not make a mess pouring the grounds into your coffee maker. I saw a burr grinder at Caribou Coffee for sale that looks like it avoids this problem.

If I were a coffee drinker, I would get this:https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hribarcain/coffeejacktm-the-pocket-sized-barista

MehYou'll also need a portable grinder capable of a fine grind, a source of hot water (near boiling), and some place to disassemble and clean it when you're done.Do portable milk steamers exist?

all it is is a really small espresso machine without all the stuff needed to make it. I'd rather have a far more versatile aeropress and get it tomorrow instead of a sketch kickstarter[Edited on December 4, 2019 at 10:56 AM. Reason : its not like you save any energy, you still need to heat the water]

Current setup:-Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle: https://fellowproducts.com/products/staggekg-My trusty Aeropress-Hand grinder-Local beans that are literally roasted a street away from my house. That Stagg kettle has been a game-changer though. Single degree, accurate temperature control. Heats incredibly fast. Maintains accurate temperature. It really lets me dial in specific temperatures for specific coffees. Best tasting coffee I've ever made at home. Better yet, I can make coffee for myself and then if my wife or a guest wants tea that requires a hotter temperature, I just turn the dial and the remaining water is heated up in about 20 seconds seconds from my coffee temperature to say 210 for their earl grey tea.

Y'all ever drank hot black eyed pea water? Or do you prefer it iced?
12/4/2019 12:24:50 PM
^^ Start roasting your own beans and have local beans that are literally roasted in your house.

The black and herbal variants we keep at home we tend to brew with water between 205 and 210 depending on the tea. And no, not atypically cold water - at least to me. Depending on the specific coffee that I'm using, I enjoy most of the coffees I keep at home utilizing water temperatures between 185-195. I dont consider anything between 185 and 205 to be atypical since it depends on the type of coffee, the roast, the grind, and individual taste preferences (for example, I've never done coffee of any kind above 200 at home that didn't taste a little bitter to me. My current coffee at home is one that my notes have 'dialed in' at 187.)[Edited on December 4, 2019 at 3:46 PM. Reason : ]

agreed. Coffee @ 202F. Black tea @ 210F. Herbal teas need even hotter. So my girlfriend has gotten this obsession with getting a home espresso maker. Nothing crazy, something like the De'Longhi Dedica Deluxe. She hates "black bean water" but loves flavored lattes and seems to think an espresso maker will "save her money in the long run". I have a feeling it'll get used for a month and collect dust unless i am the one using it. I make myself pour overs each morning, black, and don't have much interest in it. Thoughts? anyone have one and actually love it?]
12/4/2019 3:48:18 PM
I'd do the math and figure out where the break-even point is in terms of time (grinding, brewing, frothing, clean-up, maintenance, etc) and money (equipment, beans, milk, syrup, etc). See if she'll commit to making that many lattes. I'd guess "the long run" is probably longer than she thinks. If not, buy her a Mr. Coffee and a quart of Coffee mate pumpkin spice creamer.-]

^^^ (and others) After doing some research, it seems I've been steeping my tea at too cold a temperature. I usually drink Assam black tea and steeped it at 185 F.^^ Espresso machines are work and good ones are expensive. You also need a really good grinder. I'd love to be able to justify the cost of a nice one. Check out the manual machines from Gaggia if you're looking for a good starter machine. If you're made of money, check out LaMarzocco.
12/12/2019 4:20:46 PM
yeah. Honestly i thought about an espresso machine at home for a while and did a lot of research. But, without spending a nice chunk of change on a REAL one and taking the time to work it properly and clean it etc., it wasn't really a worthwhile jump over something like an aeropress. Just my personal conclusion. Also, re: temperature, there are a lot of good resources out there. As I've delved into the coffee world (and same applies to tea I assume), it's been interesting and kind of fun to try different coffees and different temperatures and figure out the temperatures that things really taste best to you. I've tended to start with ranges specified online and then tweak from there. That Fellow kettle I got is perfect and I highly recommend it due to the single degree temperature control.
12/12/2019 4:43:38 PM
I have a Bonavita gooseneck kettle with digital temperature control. It's made my coffee brewing way more consistent.
