I seem to be in the minority, but I agree with vinylbandit...very good, but not as good as Microcastle.

it's the only Deerhunter record I've remotely enjoyed, lol.

opinions seem to be all over the place about their prior work, but everyone seems to dig the new one.

Yeh, Microcastles is awesome. I feel like Microcastles is the perfect middle-ground between Cryptograms and Halcyon Digest. I can see a lot of early Deerhunter fans being pretty turned off by Halcyon Digest, whereas fans of poppier, quieter Deerhunter and fans of Atlas Sound could be pretty turned off by Cryptograms

that would be me. i didn't start listening to them until microcastle/weird era cont.

there are some songs on cryptograms that i really like now, though, like "hazel st."

i love all three of their albums, so it's hard to rank them. they each have their own pleasures.

i haven't listened to Turn It Up Faggot though. even bradford hates that album.

i still think Halycon Digest has way too much filler to be considered a great album. obviously the songs that are good (Helicopter, He Would Have Laughed, Revival, a few others) are awesome, but i'd say at least half the album is pretty dull/boring.

Can't wait to get somewhere where I can download that Pinkerton deluxe

New version of Crystal Castles' "Not in Love" ft. Robert Smith is A+++. So much better than their version without Smith IMO.

This is the version that was recorded during the Pinkerton sessions. The other version (which I assume is the one you are referencing as the crappy one) was recorded for the Angus soundtrack. I've had some pretty shitty rips these b-sides all these years, so it's nice to have them on here.

The two versions I used to have were picked up off napster in like 1998

The mixes were totally different. One was louder, more raw, more up tempo. Played back to back, the quieter version sounded like a Belle & Sebastian song. Pretty sure the solos were different too. Maybe is was the <128k quality but I always liked the louder version, and I'm pretty sure the track on this release (which was the b-side version) is the crappy one.

[Edited on October 28, 2010 at 4:39 PM. Reason : Crappy being a pretty relative term]

[Edited on October 28, 2010 at 4:46 PM. Reason : Anyway, man, I fucking love the Pinkerton b-sides]

the one recorded for the Angus soundtrack is way cleaner sounding. The Pinkerton b-side is a lot more raw.

Expanded version of The National's High Violet is on that internet site... Some of these B-sides are great, and the alternate version of Terrible Love doesn't sound like it was recorded in a bathroom stall. I like it.

Alex Ebert's (aka, Edward Sharpe) new solo single "Truth" is pretty damn good.

I gotta give another recommendation to Tame Impala - Innerspeaker and I don't even like the psychedelic rock. Dave Fridmann produced it.

Yea the first time or two I listened to it, I wasn't really sure what to think. I think I said something along the times of "I liked it but it was definitely different." Now, after listening to it tons at work the past 2 weeks I absolutely love it and hate that I was too tired to drive up to Asheville Sunday

Saw sufjan in atlanta on saturday. It was a great concert, and easily one of the best stage performances I've ever seen. The video, visuals, costumes, etc. were all top-notch. He played for over 2 hours (!!) which is way longer than he typically plays. Only about 4-5 songs were non Age of Adz or All Delighted People, but I was fine with that. He talked a lot between songs about the inspiration for the album, his mental and physical problems, his love life, etc.

I was particularly excited to be able to pick up All Delighted People on vinyl at the show

yeah, he played 2 and a half hours exactly in asheville. couldn't believe it was that long.

i really wonder if he is gay...he seems super gay and referenced elton john, cats on ice, and walt whitman when i saw him. not that it matters, just curious

^^ haha... i was having those exact thoughts during the concert. it's hard to say... i also thought he was trying to channel david bowie with the stage show. but, then again, it's hard not looking like you're trying to channel david bowie if you're wearing a bright shiny costume and dancing around flamboyantly

MAD props to suffie for doing his thing, pouring his heart out, and not being afraid to be judged

So, I've been itching to play music more again since I live so far away from the other guys in CTA and we never get to play. But I really don't want to do any other metal band outside of that. I have a couple talented musicians for friends down here where I live but our tastes aren't always exactly aligned so we never really jam.

However, this past weekend when we were out drinking we were talking about music and Weezer came up and everyone at the table was just talking about how good the first few albums were. So I said to myself "of course...who doesn't love the first two Weezer albums?"

So we are going to start jamming some Weezer covers with the intent of just playing some local shows. At first we all felt kind of icky about starting a cover band, but then we just said 'screw it, it will be fun even if we just do it for a couple shows.'

We'll see how this goes

the new album by The 1900's, Return of the Century is really solid.

if you're a fan of Dr. Dog, The New Pornographers, Camera Obscura, I'm From Barcelona, and similar bands, you'll probably enjoy it as well.
