Speaking of IPAs, I tried the Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA on draft at Tyler's in Durham last week and found it to be excellent. Jumped right up to among my favorites of the style, based on that couple of pints at least.

I love Bear Republic, just wish they distributed more of their specialty beers in CO, we only have Racer 5, Red Rocket, Hop Rod Rye & Racer X that I've seen.Btw, if you like Racer 5, you gotta try Hop Rod Rye, phenominal!

I gave Modus Hoperandi a try last night after stumbling upon it in Lowes Foods. The can was so distinct I could have sworn I'd seen it in this thread and I guess I was right!Very pleased. Would drink again. A

^ I really like that beer too. I find myself primarily buying canned beers these days - less space taken up in the recycle bin. Most of the CO breweries are canning now. Is that common in NC as well?
5/27/2011 2:31:41 PM
^ I'm a big fan of Old Chub. Anyone tried Yella Pils?
5/27/2011 3:12:33 PM
^I've only had Dale's Pale Ale, but Lowes in SC had both of those. My buddy's supposed to get me some Gubna soon.^^Mother Earth (Kinston, NC) announced this week they'd start canning soon.
5/27/2011 3:19:51 PM
Yella Pils is really good. Might be my favorite pilsner to be honest. I like it better than Noble Pils and Victory Prima Pils. I also love Dale's Pale Ale. Old Chub isn't my style though.I could really go for a few beers tonight.

Hell yea, Oskar Blues is the shit! pretty much started the 'craft' canned beer scene here in CO, now Avery, Wynkoop, Upslope, Ska Brewing, Fort Collins, Breckenridge, Big Sky Brewing (in MT) are all in cans...It's because so many people in CO enjoyed being able to take cans on their adventures... camping, hiking, parks, outdoor concerts, etc...Odell 90-Schilling right now at work.[Edited on May 27, 2011 at 5:01 PM. add anderson valley to the list of canned brews.not a canned beer but discussing Pilsners you fans should give Sweetwater Road Trip a try. Very good.
5/27/2011 5:03:13 PM
Oh yeah I had that at Saucer during my plate party and it was really good. My memory is a little foggy from that night.
5/27/2011 5:22:49 PM
Asheville Brewing also cans a couple beers, but I don't think they make it too far from the areaspeaking of...picked up some nice stuff there last weekendFullsteam First FrostFoothills Hoppyumgrowlers of Craggie PBJ (a belgian with local jam), Nantahala App Trail Pale, Pisgah Endless Summer, and Catawba Valley Oakey Dokey (sour brown ale)it happened to be craft beer week, so there were some cool events in town as well

nc beer people, i need a little help -- i'm moving from socal and want to bring some delicious west coast beers with me to enjoy while on the east coast this summerwhat west coast brews are readily available (so i don't need to bring them)? i assume stone is everywhere (specifically ruination and sublimely self-righteous), what about ballast point sculpin? and bear republic or green flash? port brewing?i'm going to be in san diego next weekend just before i leave so i'm hoping to stock up (or at least i'm leaving room in the car for about a case or so) -- i'm planning to grab some alpine, ballast point dorado if i can find it (and sculpin, if it's not in nc), russian river for sure, maybe some alesmithwhen i've been back visiting recently i usually like to try local stuff, so i haven't really looked for the west coast beers... thanks for the help[Edited on May 30, 2011 at 6:07 PM. 5/30/2011 6:12:17 PM
yeah, i'm sure i'll have a few of those as well -- but to my beer tastes, the super hoppy west coast ipas are my favorite kind of beer and so far i haven't had a comparable nc beerand i'm moving to austria in august, so i wanna get in all the delicious beer i can before i end up in the land of lagers
5/30/2011 6:16:02 PM

5/31/2011 6:56:28 AM
randomly picked up the Shiner seasonal over the long weekend...it was surprisingly tastyPale Ale brewed with Grapefruit and ginger
5/31/2011 8:37:38 AM
lol that shit is terrible
5/31/2011 10:15:38 AM
^Oarsman or the Shiner seasonal?
5/31/2011 10:25:33 AM
the shiner seasonal.their last seasonal, the dortmunder was ok, but the ruby red one is an abortion.i guess it's the shitty water, but moving to texas has been really disappointing on the local beer scene. st. arnolds, spoetzl (i guess counts), real ale, are all mediocre at best. pa/delaware had some major bright spots. also, i'm still kinda bummed i can't get as much of the colorado micros i would have expected. there's just not the scene for it yet, although it is developing. slowly. Bring as much Russian River Blind Pig IPA and AleSmith IPA to the East Coast as possible. I am not sure if NC has Port either, but good stuff... really good.
5/31/2011 3:09:36 PM
^prospero, you mentioned Upslope - do they distribute to Denver? I thought they were Boulder county only? REALLY REALLY small operation - they were hand canning when I visited them last. Their pale ale is one of my regular beers.I volunteered for the Great American Beer Fest last year and got to work with another really small brewery out of Virginia - Devils Backbone. They've cleaned up at GABF and WBC lately, and I know they sure as shit don't distribute out here in Colorado, but if any of you NC guys get a chance, pick up some of their stuff. http://dbbrewingcompany.com/Is anyone other than Prospero planning on going to GABF this year?[Edited on May 31, 2011 at 3:19 PM. 6/15/2011 7:34:33 PM
120-minute is coming to Colorado, I'll keep my eye out for extra, but my guess is that the first batch of 100bbl is going to vanish into thin air at the distribution level.Funny thing is I'm actually going to DFH next Weds. TWO DAYS before they sell it at their brewery and brewpub. I emailed them to see if I could get a 4-pack early... no response.[Edited on June 16, 2011 at 11:04 AM. Reason : .]
